Dear Member,

March continued to be a busy month as usual with a number of programmes and activities.

The 100th anniversary of the International Women’s day was celebrated in the Club on the 8th. Every lady who visited the Club was greeted with a rose on the occasion. The lady staff members of the Club were treated to a sumptuous tea and a gift voucher for `500 was presented to each of them.

The overwhelming response received from the members to the inaugural edition of the Bangalore Club Golf Championship resulted in the tournament being played over 2 days. While 200 members could be accommodated many more had to go back disappointed! The participants appreciated the playing arrangements as also the give-aways. The prize distribution function, with the entertainment, cocktails and dinner, was also a great hit.

The ever-popular programme of old Hindi songs, Bhooli Hui Yadeein, in its twentieth year, was once again well patronised by the members and their guests. The attendance crossed 1,600 inspite of restricting guests to 250. Revival, the group from Mumbai, provided scintillating music, much to the joy of the members.

Earth Hour is a global event organized by World Wide Fund for Nature and is held on the last Saturday of March, every year. This was observed by the Club for the first time on the 26th. All but essential lights were turned off between 8.30PM & 9.30PM and the candle lit Club looked beautiful.

The Ladies Evening on the 26th had Deepti providing the ladies with instructions on Bollywood dance steps.

Also on the 26th, members of the Club visited the Toyota car factory. The management of Toyota has agreed to accommodate visits by some more members in April.

Such of those who could not make it for the visit this time may register their names in the Club office for the forthcoming visits.

A talk on Science in yoga and relief for common ailments by Mr. H.A. Nagaraja Rao was well received by the members. Mr. Rao is willing to conduct classes in the Club if sufficient number of members enroll. Please inform Sports Manager if you are interested.

We had a packed audience for Mr.Aditya Sondhi’s talk on making of a will. Excerpts of his talk will be published in the next issue of Dovecot.

The semi-final match between India & Pakistan was screened on two big screens on the main lawn. On this special occasion, the lawn was tastefully decorated and food & beverages were offered to members at a special discount of 25%. The final match between India & Sri Lanka is also being screened in a similar fashion and befitting the occasion the discount will be 50% on food & beverages.

The annual cricket match between the President’s XI & Vice-President’s XI was played on the RSI ground. The match was not fixed and the President’s XI team won the match fairly & squarely! This was followed by the Inter-club sports tournaments between Bangalore Club & RSI, hosted this year by RSI. Bangalore Club won trophies for cricket, billiards & bridge while RSI won the tennis & squash trophies. The prize distribution ceremony was followed by cocktails and lunch at which Maj. Genl. Pradhan, our Committee member & Chairman of RSI, and his colleagues were at their gracious best.

The Book Exchange programme continued to draw a good response from the members. It has been decided to have it once a quarter, henceforth.

...From the President’s Desk (Contd)

An 8” GoTo telescope is being installed on the terrace of the Chambers C Block. “GoTo” telescopes have built-in computers that do the work of pointing the telescope at astronomical objects that you select and then finding them for you. Members will be notified about the usage timings as soon as the telescope is in place.

April will begin with the All Fools day Special, a surprise programme. A traditional Ugadi lunch is planned for the 4th. April Blossoms, a DJ programme, will be the flavour of the month. A vintage car exhibition and an International food festival are also planned later in the month.

Fabricspa (laundry) opened its outlet in the Club premises, recently. It is conveniently located next to Reflections beauty parlour. Fabricspa have agreed to extend a special discount to our members and a coupon to avail this is being attached to your current bill.

The high food cost in the catering department is a matter of concern and the Committee decided to appoint a professional agency to look into recipe and food costing. The agency has been entrusted with the job of implementing a cost control system which will provide our staff with concise, timely, accurate, actionable information in an easy-to-understand format. Once the system becomes established as part of the operational routine it will help in controlling costs and possibly reducing the menu prices.

Kitchen renovation work will be taken up, shortly. A sketch showing the proposed layout has been displayed in the Club house.

Water proofing of the Brigadier Hill Annexe has just been completed. The job was entrusted to a specialised agency, Swepco, who have provided us a ten year guarantee for the job. The interiors will now be painted and new curtains provided to give the hall a fresh and elegant look.

Portions of the main lawn which have become bald due to excessive use are being re-laid. Inconvenience caused to the members due to this is regretted.

In order to stop usage of Club roads as a thoroughfare it is proposed to permit entry of guest vehicles only from the Lavelle Road gate.

Wrongly parked vehicles cause a lot of inconvenience to members. Please park your vehicles only in the designated areas as also leave the parking spaces reserved for handicapped members free for their use.

A note on the present status of the proposed sports complex is being circulated separately,

Members are reminded that they can play golf at the Air Force Golf Course in Hebbal. Those interested should collect the playing card from the Chambers office.

As always, we look forward to your support, feedback and suggestions on making our Club a true home away from home.

With warm regards,

Yours sincerely,

Amarnath Kamath

Good Nutrition is vital for children. Eating habits developed early will influence their growth, tendency for illness and behavior. Going for green foods such as organic vegetables and fruits, more natural food ingredients and less junk food can provide them with long and healthy living. Isn’t that a great gift to give?

Here are some tips to green your food:

1. Check your food’s mileage. Californian Apples and Chinese Plums could mean they are filled with preservatives and pesticides that enhance longevity. Pick up instead the ‘Ellaki’, the Papaya or the ‘Mosambi’ grown in namma Karnataka – for freshness and reducing the carbon footprint.

2. Buy what is in season – mangos will come in May, strawberries in September.

3. Buy local fruits and vegetables – add freshness, variety and lessen your carbon footprint. Again from namma Bengaluru and namma Karnataka.

4. Try growing a few veggies and fruit on your own. Maybe a tomato in a pot, a banana in the backyard. You will help the economy.

5. Buy organic. They use sustainable practices to keep you, your family and our planet healthy.

P.S. Cannot help but end with a word on Flowers.

The rest of the world may sing of ‘The flowery month of May’ but for us in Bangalore, the brightest and the best of flowering trees appear surely March & April. Look around the club and see the Jacaranda, in defiantly bold violet, flowering with a vengeance. Not to be left behind are the Tabebuia, bursting into bloom (or Pink Trumpet trees) with generous array of deep pink (sometimes yellow) flowers in luxuriant scatter of frothy familiarity to brighten our summer days adding colour, zest and happiness.

Now look for the radiant yellow Cassia, also known as the Golden Shower tree glowing in the brilliant sunlight. Look for the emergent budding of squirt like red, white and pink flowers on the vast green domes of old proud Rain trees.

This sudden explosion of vibrant colours serves to make this an exciting time for flower lovers, an event so unique to our lovely city.

Drink in this munificent and bounteous gift of nature, for it so stunning, so comforting, and oh so full of divine sanction.

Enter the heartland of Europe. Wander through history in Krakow, linger over kaffee and kuchen in Vienna, soak in style in Budapest or just live a little in Prague or Berlin. Think of Central Europe as a new “old” world destination. This enticing region consists of Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Central Europe is excellent value for money and considerably cheaper than Western Europe. One can explore this region by rail, road or river cruise. As a general thumb rule, plan to stay in the capitals for 3 days each and then do day trips to neighboring areas. It is recommended to try out the local cuisine on your own but if you require vegetarian or Indian food, it can be arranged for in advance.

Germany is rich in authentic castles that childhood dreams are made of and rivers and forests to enjoy. In 2011, it is 125 years since the death of King Ludwig 2nd, the “Mad King” who left Bavaria with the fairytale castle of Neuschwanstein (made famous by Walt Disney as their logo).

As spring approaches in Austria, the country comes alive with music. Fans of classical music should not miss The Sound of Music tour and the weekly Mozart Symphony concerts in Salzburg. From Vienna a half-hour drive takes you to Slovakia. A small country with it’s capital, Bratislava perched on the banks of the Danube. The Slovak landscape provides inspiring natural beauty with spectacular mountains, clear lakes and green lowlands. Slovakia abounds with Gothic Temples, Baroque and Rococo Palaces and only a boat ride away from Budapest.

The Danube river divides the city of Budapest into Buda on one bank and the Pest plain on the other. Lake Balaton with its surrounding towns is the playground of the Hungarian people and rapidly being discovered by the rest of the world. This is the largest lake in Central Europe, known as the Hungarian Sea, and at 77Km long is a must for visitors.

Cross the border to the Czech Republic and be spellbound by Prague, the city of one hundred spires. Walk across the Charles Bridge and gaze at this beautiful city and watch and hear the performing marionettes.

These nations are linked by easy travel across common borders and shared treasury of spectacular scenic variety, commanding capital cities, traditional village life, mighty castles and fortresses, formidable art treasures, music and opera festivals, crisp wines, frothy beers and for the young at heart, a great clubbing scene.

Albert Einstein

There probably was not a more powerful thinker in the 20th century – or any century, for that matter – than theoretical physicist Albert Einstein.

With physical tools no more complicated than pencil and paper, he revolutionized the way that scientists think about time, space and matter. His intellectual tools were beyond compare, of course – including a deep, intuitive understanding of the workings of nature combined with the so-called thought experiments that he used to develop theories.

The wild-haired wonder was no slouch when it came to putting pencil to paper to more traditional uses too: namely, writing about the complexities of life in a way that we all can understand. A humanist and a Jew, he was an outspoken advocate of peace and social justice. Here’s a small sampling of musings from the intellectual giant:

“ I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones”

“ Before God we are all equally wise…..and equally foolish”

“ Do not worry about your difficulties in mathematics, I can assure you mine are still greater”.

“ Participated in the tournament and must congratulate the club and Touche Golf on the excellent job done!

Specific feedback:

1. Reception and information - Excellent

2. Time planning - well handled

3. Give aways - a lovely surprise and a great gesture

4. Special gifts - Well handled. The hole in one prize of a car was a little lop sided!

5. Refreshments - Good

6. Overall Touche did a fantastic job

7. Other suggestions - A feedback mail to all the participants giving the scores of the winners and where each participant stood would be nice! A few soft drinks stations along the course would have been welcome given the heat. Overall, a great job!, Keep it up” - C S Murali (M-467 )
