Dear Parents/Guardians,

This will be my last newsletter until we return from Spring Break. I have included calendar

events through Monday, March 19.

SAFETY – As the nation continues to reel from the events in Florida, I wanted to share with you

about the safety of our campus. I have had a couple of concerned parents who rightfully asked

what we do to keep our kids safe, so I wanted to share that with all of you in this newsletter. I

know that each of you are concerned for your child’s safety, and I guarantee you that we are

concerned for every child at MacArthur. We do not generally publicize this information,

because people with ill intentions can use it to get around whatever is in place, or use it to plan.

Therefore, I want to share some general information.

Every NEISD campus does a monthly fire drill, and we are required to complete eight

emergency response drills. This is an NEISD standard. At MacArthur, we always try to do more

than the minimum number. Among the emergency response drills, we have at least two Lockout

Drills and Lockdown Drills. The latter two drills address active shooter situations. The Lockout

drill is when there is a potential threat in the area. All classroom doors are locked, exterior doors

are locked and students are not allowed to leave the classroom and anyone outside is brought into

the building. The Lockdown Drill is when there is a threat on campus. All classroom and

exterior doors are locked, and all activity ceases until everything is clear. We have already done

both of these drills this year and this past week we did our second Lockdown drill. We will also

do additional Lockout drills, as they are the most critical. Every year we review emergency

procedures and expectations with all staff. In addition, I met with all faculty and staff to review

campus safety and review both of these procedures in light of Florida. The same information

was shared with custodial and cafeteria staff as well as paraprofessionals. I also shared

information with the students through our video announcements to ensure that they understand

the importance of safety and complying with all safety procedures. The common theme shared

with all is three-fold:

Be AWARE – Do not ignore warning signs or unusual behavior

Be RESPONSIBLE – Report immediately any strangers on campus. Don’t wait for

someone else to do it.

Be SERIOUS – Take school safety seriously and follow proper procedures even in a

drill.

We are very blessed in NEISD that we have a police force and High Schools are provided with

two resource officers. These are not security guards, but licensed police officers. While other

parts of our country discuss whether there should be officers on our campus, we have them and

have had them for years. They are also provided to Middle and Elementary schools. Our

officers at MAC are an integral part of our safety and security and our team as a whole. They

keep us informed of critical situations and any dangers in the area. We are grateful to them and

to NEPD for their service to our campuses. In our most recent drills, we have been able to

secure our campus within three to four minutes. However, our goal is always to do better. We

are also within three blocks of the NEPD Police Station, with whom we have a strong and

supportive relationship.

In addition to all of the above, administrators, as well as our police officers and teachers are out

and on duty during arrival and dismissal, as well as during passing periods and during all

lunches. I also make sure to send out a phone and email message to my parents as soon as

possible in the case of a serious situation or a critical incident.

With all of this said, it is important that we all take a role in campus safety. If you are aware of a

situation or potential situation, please let us know. We take any threat seriously, and follow up

on every lead, utilizing our police as well as SAPD if necessary. Make sure that you sign-in

whenever you are on campus. This is not only a MAC expectation but a district requirement as

well. As we go on break, if you live near campus and see something that may be of concern,

please notify NEPD.

I hope this helps you feel a little more peace about the safety of your children. Please know that

the safety and welfare of our students has always been, and will always be my first priority as

well as the priority of NEISD. I always tell our faculty and staff that what we do together is

always greater than what we do alone. Working together, I pray that we will always do what is

best for our kids. Go Brahmas!

MAC SOCCER –

Girls’: On Tuesday night, our Lady Brahmas were Back at BAC facing the Lady Jags. The

Brahmas put up a good defense, but the Johnson defense was tough. The Lady Jags got into the

net 5 times over the course of the game, as the Lady Brahmas took the 0 to 5 loss against

Johnson. On Friday, our Lady Brahmas were at BAC one more time taking on the Lady Mavs.

Both teams put up a good defensive battle as the game went scoreless through the first half. In

the second half, Kiana Moore fed the ball to Bella Von Toussaint for the score. Bella returned

the favor providing the assist to Kiana for the second Brahma score. The Brahmas were not

done, as Bella provided the assist to Kiana once more for the third Brahma goal. As a capper to

the evening, Natalia Cantu found the net one more time to give the Brahmas their fourth goal, as

our Lady Brahmas took the 4 to 1 win over Madison!

Our Lady Brahmas are now 3-5-1 in district. This week our Lady Brahmas will be at

Comalander on Tuesday at 7 pm to take on Roosevelt in their final game until after Spring

Break. Please come out and cheer on the Lady Brahmas as they close in on the end of their

district run. Go Lady Brahma Soccer!

Boys’: This past Tuesday, our Brahmas were under the lights at BAC against Johnson. The

Brahmas were down 2 to 0, when Jose Mendoza found the net with an assist from Samuel

Villegas. Oscar Ceballos was in the goal box the full 80 minutes, gave up only 2 goals, and had

5 saves, as the Brahmas took the 1 to 2 loss against Johnson. Friday found the Brahmas facing

off with Madison. Once again, Oscar Ceballos took care of the goal box and had 6 saves and 0

goals scored. The game was scoreless for a good portion, but then Norberto Lira fed the ball to

Samuel Villegas for the goal and the 1 to 0 win over Madison!

Our Brahmas are now 2-6-1 in district. This Tuesday our Brahmas will be at Comalander to take

on Roosevelt at 5 pm. This will be their last game until after Spring Break. Go Brahma Soccer!

MAC SOFTBALL – On Tuesday, our Lady Brahma Softball finished non-district play with a

big win over Antonian. An early lead helped propel our Brahmas to victory. They scored on a

single by Kiersten Licea, a single by Kindell Brooks, and a single by Emma Marthiljohni in the

first inning. Our Lady Brahmas scored eight runs in the fourth inning. The big inning was thanks

to an error on a ball put in play by Miranda Garza and Jessica Funk, a triple by Kindell Brooks, a

home run by Kiersten Licea, and a double by Taylor Medina. Sarah Montes earned the victory

on the pitcher's mound for the Brahmas. She allowed three hits and one run over three innings,

striking out three. Kylie Scafido threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Scafido recorded

the last three outs as our Brahmas took a 16 to 1 victory over Antonian. On Friday, the Lady

Brahmas opened District Play against Reagan. The Brahmas had everything working on Friday.

They got on the board in the first inning when Katelyn Esparza grounded out, scoring one run.

Then, a grand slam homer by Kindell Brooks scored 4 more runs to give the Brahmas an early 5

run lead. Our Lady Brahmas tallied another five runs in the sixth inning. Kiersten Licea scored a

home run. Taylor Medina, Miranda Garza, and Heaven Compton all moved runners across the

plate with RBIs in the inning. Sarah Montes earned the win for Brahmas. She surrendered one

run on five hits over six innings, striking out one and walking zero, as our Lady Brahmas took a

big district win over Reagan 13 to 1! Way to go!

Congratulations to our Lady Brahmas on a great District opener. This week the Lady Brahmas

will be back at the NE complex on Tuesday to take on Johnson at 7 pm. Then on Friday, they

will face Madison at 7 pm at the NE complex. Over Spring break, the Lady Brahmas will have a

4 pm game at the NE complex against Roosevelt. On Wednesday, they will be in Somerset to

play Somerset at 7 pm. You need to come out and watch these girls play. It promises to be a

great season! Go Lady Brahma Softball!

MAC BASEBALL – This past Tuesday the Brahmas played a non-district game against Central

Catholic. It was a tough game, and our Brahmas brought in 2 runs and showed some good play,

but it would not be enough for the win as they took the loss to Central. On Thursday, the

Brahmas began play in the Round Rock Tournament. This is one of the toughest tournaments of

the pre-district season. They opened up Thursday morning against Belton. It was a tough

defensive battle, and sat the end of regulation it ended in a 3 to 3 tie. That afternoon they were

back on the diamond against Goose Creek. The Brahmas played a great game and took the win 6

to 3. Friday was a tough day on the diamond for the Brahmas. They opened up the day against

Stony Point. The Brahmas put up a good fight, but took a close 4 to 2 loss. Their second game

was against JJ pierce. It was also a very close game as the Brahmas took the 4 to 2 loss. Their

final game was on Saturday against a very tough Round Rock team. The Brahmas put up a good

fight, but at the end took the 7 to 2 loss. Overall, the Brahmas played well and battled hard

against some tough teams. Next up, the Brahmas will start District play on Monday when they

take the diamond at BAC to take on Reagan at 7:15 pm. Then on Thursday, they will begin play

in the San Antonio Classic Tournament. Over the Spring Break, they will be at BAC three times.

On Tuesday at 11 am, they will take on Johnson. On Thursday, they will play Madison at 3:30

pm. On Saturday at 3 pm, they will go up against Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial. Take

somebody out to the ballpark and cheer on the Brahmas! Go Brahma Baseball!

MAC TRACK AND FIELD –

Girls - The Brahma Girls Track team were the Southside Relays Champions this past week!! On

Thursday, March 2nd, the Brahmas competed against nine other teams, and walked away as the

overall meet champs, scoring 146 points. Second place scored 115 points. Freshman, Anabelle

Wells was the high-point scorer for the team, amassing 23 individual points! The breakdown of

MAC TENNIS - Mac Tennis played in the East Central Hornet Classic this past weekend with

some impressive results. Mac placed 2nd overall in the team division. Jimmy Berry and

Demetrio Herrera played in the boys’ singles championship with Berry edging out Herrera for

first place. Jack Sadler and Jackson Senter lost a 3 set match in the boys’ doubles championship.

Olivia Arellano advanced to the girls’ singles semis. The mixed doubles’ team of Payton Chism

and Kailey Tamez also advanced to the semifinals. Haley Dean went 4-1 to win the consolation

finals in girls’ singles play. Mac will compete next week in the Clemens Classic in Schertz. Go

Brahma Tennis!

MAC BOWLING CLUB – The Varsity Boys Bowling Club team participated in the High

School Bowling Regional tournament on March 4th. The team took 1st Place! They will now be

heading to the State Tournament on Mar 24-25 at Bandera Bowl in Leon Valley.

MAC JUNIORS AND SENIORS - The University of the Incarnate Word is pleased to host the

upcoming National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) meeting aimed at enlisting Greater

San Antonio area high-achieving high school (junior & senior level) and undergraduate students

interested in health professions & STEM related field careers as part of the College Health

Scholars Program (CHSP), a five-year federally funded effort aimed at increasing the

effectiveness of academic and personal preparation for health related professional education. For

Extended Hours: The end of the nine weeks is approaching and to help our students finish

strong they library will stay open until 4:45 pm Monday-Thursday this week.

Teen Tech Week (March 4-10): We are celebrating Teen Tech week in the library with a Retro

Video Gaming Challenge! March 5th-9th, students will have a chance to answer questions about

10 retro video game artifacts in our library display case. Students who make a perfect score will

be put into a prize drawing!

Virtual Reality Makerspace: The library will host a Virtual Reality Makerspace before school

on March 8th at 8:15 am. Students will get hands on experience with holograms on a Merge

Cube as well as augmented reality with HP Reveal. Students can also bring their own devices

and try out VR goggles

March Madness YA Fiction Tournament: Let the madness begin! This year TAYSHAS Top

Ten award winners will face off against your favorite books in a series. Vote in each day's

match-up on the library website and come back every day between now and March 29th to vote

Testing and Career Prep Resource: Testing season is approaching, and I want to make sure

everyone knows about a fantastic resource that is available to students. GALE Testing and

Education Reference Center (TERC) is a digital resource available in the Library Resources

folder in Launchpad. It has a wealth of online practice tests and online prep books for STAAR,

AP exams, college entrance exams, ASVAB as well as vocational certification exams. It also

features scholarship and college searches, resume writing tips, a virtual career library, as well as

basic math and English/writing skills tutorials. You can find it in our Library Resources folder in

Launchpad. Students must register for their own free accounts to take tests and track their

MAC COUNSELORS’ CORNER –

With course selection wrapping up we now move in to our season for testing. If your student is

involved with Dual Credit, Advanced Placement courses or going off to college, the following

information is important.

DUAL CREDIT (for those students wanting to participate in Dual Credit courses for the 2018-

2019 school year and have completed their ApplyTexas application.) If you have not already,

sign up on Remind Me (Text: @macdc2018 to 81010) to receive text/email updates of all Dual

Credit events and deadlines. Next deadline: March 7, 2018 - Pages 5-8 from the DC Academic

Handbook must be filled out and turned in to the counseling office. The Academic Handbook is

available in the counseling office or online.

TSI TESTING: MacArthur will offer Texas Success Initiative (TSI) testing for those needing it

for admission in to Dual Credit and those needing it for the college they will be attending

(seniors). TSI for Dual Credit is administered on Saturdays (see dates below). TSI requirement

for seniors is administered during the school day (see dates below). Sign up for both in the

counseling office.

MacArthur Career Center:

Ms. Endaisia Love and Ms. Jennifer Martinez are available to assist students and parents with all

aspects of college and/or life after high school. (8:30am–4:45pm in the College and Career

Center). Ms. Love is currently scheduling ono-on-one conferences with parents. Career Center

Opportunity Award Scholarship and Conroy Scholarships - The San Antonio A&M Club

Foundation’s scholarship application deadline is Tuesday, March 13th at 5:00pm. This

year they will award eight $12,000 Opportunity Award Scholarships and four $1,000

Conroy Scholarships to high school seniors who have been unconditionally admitted to

Texas A&M University for the Fall 2018 semester and be unconditionally committed to

attending and graduating from Texas A&M University – College Station or Galveston

Jesse Ness Memorial Scholarship for STEM - Thanks to a generous donation from the

family of Jesse Ness, a $1000 scholarship is available, for a MacArthur student going in

to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field at an Alamo

Community College District (ACCD*) school. The Jesse Ness Scholarship will be

awarded to an applicant who fulfills the requirements below.

Must be a current high school senior at MacArthur High School

Must be planning to attend an Alamo Community College District (ACCD*)

school for the fall 2017 school year

High School GPA must be at least a 80 (on a 100 scale)

Must be pursuing a degree or certificate in the STEM field

Must have financial need

Must include a typed response to the following prompt, in 200 words or less:

Why do you want to pursue a career in the STEM field?

Must submit completed application by April 27, 2018

NEISD's DRUG AWARENESS COMMUNITY EVENT -

North East ISD invites ALL families to this critical event on how to protect and empower your

children and your loved ones from America's substance abuse epidemic. The special event will

feature Bob Stutman and Judge Jodi Debbrecht Switalski. Bob Stutman is one of the world's

foremost experts in substance abuse with proven experience in the subject. Judge Debbrecht

Switalski is a former Metro Detroit felony prosecutor with a perfect trial record involving mostly

violent crimes. The event will be held at Blossom Athletic Center on Thursday March 22nd,

starting at 6:30 pm.

The speakers will answer questions such as:

Why do kids use drugs at such an early age?

Which drugs are most commonly abused?

What about heroin, opioids and synthetics?

What can you as a parent do about it?

Officer Interest - It is the time of year to begin the process of selecting our PTSA Officers for

the 2018-2019 school year. The nominating committee (which was elected by the general

membership at our February 2018 meeting) is charged with presenting our membership with

their recommended slate of officers at the April 2018 Membership PTSA meeting; which will be

held on April 18, 2018 at 7:45 a.m. in the auditorium. If you are interested in serving in one of

the officer positions, please complete the attached form and return it as per the instructions on

Parking and Traffic: Please remember to observe speed limit and safety on campus. There are

clearly marked entry and exit points. Failure to follow can result in traffic problems and could

result in a traffic accident. In addition, in the morning, construction has required that we drop off

our special needs students at the front of the school. Please use caution when entering or leaving

this area. Watch for students exiting vehicles and please drive safely. About a week ago, I stood

at the entrance to the front parking area at dismissal, and I had to turn away a number of

vehicles, the majority of which were parents. I know everyone would like to get in and out

quickly, but a little patience and following the flow of traffic will keep things safe a moving

more quickly. Thank you for your cooperation.

Vapes and E-Cigarettes: Recently we have had an influx of vape and electric cigarettes on

campus. Please understand that MAC as well as all NEISD campuses, stadiums and properties

are tobacco free by law. This includes Vapes and e-cigarettes. Students are subject to

disciplinary action for possession or use of these items on school property. Anyone using these

items or any tobacco products on school property can be subject to fines. Please make sure you

share this information with your kids. Thank you for your support.

VOTER REGISTRATION – Voting is a precious right and your vote makes a difference. Do

not be silent; let your voice be heard. Each High School Principal is a Deputy Voter Registrar by

law. I want to encourage you to make sure you are registered to vote. If you or your child need

to register, you can get a registration card at MacArthur in the Principal’s Office. You can either

send it in yourself, or turn it in, and we will make sure it is turned in for you. Go Brahma Voters!

BRAHMA FANS – We want to remind all of our parents, students, and guests who attend

games or any event at home or away, that we need your assistance to ensure that we observe

appropriate spectator behavior. It is okay to disagree with a call and to be a little loud when

supporting our Brahmas. It is not okay to be disruptive or engage in personal attacks or

confrontations with Coaches, referees, or students. Anyone causing a disturbance or verbally

abusing the officials, coaches, or students will be removed from the game and may face removal

from all athletic events. Please let the coaches take care of the coaching and dealing with the

officials. It is extremely important for us to model appropriate behavior at any function. Your

cooperation and support is greatly appreciated. Go Brahmas!
