Keaa ets p csead pesa witZabiaDont just visit a country experience a whole newworld. Keanna spent three months working withorphans, vulnerable children and youth, and HIV-positive adults in Zambia through an internship atDouglas. The science students favourite part washelping lead workshops for youth on health and sexeducation in rural communities where tradition is

still rmly embedded. In Zambian culture it can be dicult for girls to sayno to men, and sex is not openly discussed. Becauseof this, many girls lack the self-esteem to turn downsexual advances, and HIV continues to spread. Theseworkshops I helped lead give youth the opportunityto learn about the implications of HIV and discusssexuality with their peers.

I loved being a part of the workshops and watchingthe youth take ownership of their personal health. Oneday was especially motivating for me because Memory, one of the girls, told me she was going to break up with

her boyfriend because he refused to get tested. It tookprofound strength for Memory to stand up for herself, and I am beyond proud of her. Thats what I loved aboutmy placement. Being in the community every dayallowed me to immerse myself in Zambian culture. Andgetting to know families and their daily struggles wasboth humbling and inspiring.

Cds fteis istWondering what it takes to be a well-rounded person? For Cody, it meansgetting a liberal arts degree. Someoneonce told me a liberal arts degree isdesigned to do one thing: make theworld inside your head a better place,he says. I never forgot it.

The A student is planning to becomea history professor, but his path wasntalways clear. A self-described slackerin high school, Cody had his OMGmoment when he took a history courseat Douglas.

Watching the instructor wasfascinating. Thats when it hit me like atruck: I needed to do what he was doing.I needed to teach. Everyone else wasstruggling to take notes, but I just satthere looking at the board and thinking, this is totally lighting up my world.

natasa takes itsw ad steadGot a big goal but scared you wont meetit? Natasha understands. If Natasha wereto star in the fable of the hare and thetortoise, shed be the tortoise. In highschool, she had a tough time keepingup with the boys, who dominated herchemistry class. They were very fast,

she recalls, and I was intimidated. Theywere so good with numbers and could docalculations quickly. I could do them, toobut I was slower.

But soon Natasha came to realize that aashy performance didnt always translateinto good marks. The boys looked likethey were doing well, but some actuallywerent. They were rushing through.

Natasha brought her methodical approachto Douglas, where she won a nationalchemistry award. Shes taken two years

of chemistry here and is heading o toUBC, where she plans to get a bachelorof education degree before enteringmedicine or pharmaceutical sciences.

Shes got a long and challenging road aheadbut any time she feels overwhelmed, sheremembers the wisdom of the tortoise. Iknow my goal is long-term it cant happenovernight. I focus on each day as it comesand try not to think about the next stage. And I know that Im going to be just ne.

Cad eps isciets et t ftei eadsDo you believe that small acts can resultin big changes? Chad does. A recentgraduate of the Bachelor of Science inPsychiatric Nursing program, Chad worksas part of a community mental healthteam on the Downtown Eastside. Whenmeeting with clients, he keeps in mindthat little things can make a big dierence

I had an instructor early in the programwho put things into perspective forme. She said when dealing with someclients say someone with schizophreniawho is living in their head all the time, paranoid about everything, worried abouteverything, just tortured by their ownthoughts if you can talk to them for veminutes, just about last nights Canucks

game or something reality-based, andtake them out of their head for a shorttime, youve done something good.

I always remember that, and I think itsa very cool, unique way of looking at it .I dont think you can go into this line ofwork expecting to cure anybody. I thinkyou can just go in hoping to make someconnections and maybe help someonecope a little better or even just listen totheir story.P

mie pvesfaie is pat fsccessIf you thought failure was a sign thatyou just couldnt cut it, Miguel hasnews for you. Hes living proof ofWinston Churchills famous edict:Success consists of going from failure

to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

The Bachelor of BusinessAdministration student and webentrepreneur recently launched aphoto-sharing site called Floggia, which is starting to make waves.Floggia went live in January 2012 andalready boasts more than 1,600 users.

But Miguel, 19, is not an overnightsuccess. Hes been developing forthe web since he was 13 and hasseen his share of disappointment. One of his ventures was Shopgram,a buy-and-sell site that was quicklycrushed by Craigslist. But instead ofadmitting defeat, Miguel soldieredon. In fact, he says failure has taughthim the most valuable lessons.

With every failure you learn somethingdierent, he says. You really dohave to fail a lot to learn, and thatswhat Ive done. I have much moreto fail and much more to learn.

ie eps istnatis pepeea ad pspeLooking for a way to help people inyour community and still make aliving? Ernie, a member of the SuckerCreek First Nation (which makes him

Cree), loves helping other Aboriginalpeople through his work at Kla-how-eyaAboriginal Centre, a Surrey organizationthat promotes the health and wellnessof Aboriginal people and the resurgenceof their culture, language and teachings. He got interested in the Co-occurringDisorders program when he realizedmany of his clients were battling mentalillness and addictions concurrently.

Doing the Co-occurring Disordersprogram is really opening my eyes. The

Aboriginal population is diagnosedwith a lot of mental health issues, andthey seem to self-medicate, so thatswhere the alcohol and drug issuescome in. Poverty, colonization and theresidential school experience all ofthese weigh heavy on Aboriginal peoplemany of whom are street-entrenched.So for somebody like me who actuallyworks in downtown cores, the majorityof my clients are people dealing withco-occurring disorders. So I am doingsomething dear to my heart.

The Douglasinstructor has served on the premierstask force on immigration, the WesternEconomic Diversication Committee, thenance committee of the CKNW OrphansFund, the Richmond Hospital Foundation,on various advisory committees toRichmond City Hall, and manages 150

acres of blueberry farms in Richmond andLadner. Hes also hosted a radio programon current political, economic and socialissues. Suki brings all this experienceand knowledge into the classroom for thebenet of his students.

I can talk about some of the other thingsthat I do and put facts and gures infront of them. Whether its the broadcastindustry, the agriculture industry or thecharity Im involved with, I can relatetheory into real life for the students. Ithink this gives them an advantage.

Suki also teaches at a major university, but loves teaching at Douglasbecause of the smaller class sizes.

The biggest dierence is at theuniversity I walk in, put on a mic, lecture and then leave. I have verylimited contact with the students. But atDouglas, I can get to know the studentson a rst-name basis. Theres more roomfor contact with them one on one.

Bea eets wee e atEnglish instructor Brenna Clarke Grayspeaks your language. A lover of newtechnologies and dierent ways oflearning, Brenna will help you nd yourway into the study of literature at a levelyou can appreciate.

A text s a text s a textI like to start the semester with TVshows or graphic novels or lms. I ndthe same student who is super nervousabout discussing a theme when its insomething scary like a poem or a novelcan talk about it uently when theyveseen it in a TV show or read it in agraphic novel. If students can recognizesomething in one kind of text, they aretotally capable of doing it in another.

a s so 2000For our students, email is how you getin touch with Mom and Dad, how youget info from your bank and stu. I ndFacebook and Twitter are about meetingstudents where theyre at. Rather thansitting here waiting for them to reach outby email, they might send me a quicktweet that says, Hey, Im confused aboutthis reading.

    Beyond te assoo

I set up course groups on Facebook, which means students have a commonplace they can go to discuss courseissues. The best is when they say, I justsaw a funny video on Youtube and itreminded me of this main characterwere talking about. Making those real-life connections is what the study ofliterature is all about.

neia eps fid feetAs a peer tutor at the Douglas CollegeLearning Centre, Negina loves helpingher fellow students hone their study

habits and improve their writing skills. But for Negina, tutoring goes waybeyond sitting down with you and yourbooks once a week. She knows thetransition to college can be confusing shes been there so shes here to helpyou navigate through your rst year andgure things out.

I remember when I was new here. Ididnt know the little things that I nowtake for granted, like how to cite sourcesin an essay. We never did that in highschool. Or even things like, should I be

recording my class lectures? Id alwaysbe emailing my professors, and I felt likeI was bugging them.

So its nice to have other students totalk to whove been in the same positionIts one thing hearing it from a parentor an instructor. But if you can talk toanother student whos taken the sameclass maybe even with the sameinstructor they can walk you through itI think thats really helpful.
