Double Trouble was produced by the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA). The 13 episodes x 24 minute series is a live action, comedy drama. The story explores the lives of identical twin girls, separated at birth due to an old superstition. Yuma lives with her wealthy father and step family in Sydney. Kyanna lives in a community in the central Australian desert with her mother and extended family. These girls are completely unaware that the other exists, until a twist of fate sees them bump into each other in Alice Springs and they agree to swap lives. It’s a story of different cultures. On15and16August2011,12schoolcoordinators converged on the ACTF for the annual meeting of the national panel of ACTF Advisory Schools. This meeting gave the ACTF an opportunity to update coordinators about the work of the ACTF, particularly, in respect to the Convergence Review, programs under development, new ideas for future productions, and the creation and distribution of new education resources. Also, the coordinators had the opportunity to share their schools’ experiences in using ACTF programs and resources and provide advice on educational directions in their state and territory that influence the delivery of classroom education.

Priortothemeetingthecoordinatorscompleted a questionnaire about the ACTF website. This feedback gave the ACTF valuable evidence about how to direct information more effectively to educators.

The ACTF is interested in expanding the Advisory Schools’ network in each state and territory and is interested in hearing from energetic teachers who feel their school might like to be involved. Should you be one such teacher, please view the work of the Advisory Schools on the ACTF website andcontactMaggieGarrard ([email protected]) directly.

The ACTF, in partnership with the GeographyTeachers’AssociationofVictoria(GTAV),hasproducedan array of engaging teaching strategies and learning activities that support primary teachers and lower secondary geography/humanities teachers using My Place in the classroom. The geography section is available in the My Place Teachers’ Guide (Series 1 & 2) and addresses the learning concepts identifiedintheShapingPaperfor the Australian Curriculum for Geography,foryears3-6.

The My Place: Geography resource offers more than 40 teaching activities relating to 20 video clips selected from series 1 and 2. Teachers can access interactive maps which show the changing landacrosssevendecades(1948-1888).Theteachingactivitiesusean enquiry-based approach and focus on concepts such as Place, Environment and Space. The mapping activities build student skills, knowledge and understanding of basic elements such as distance, direction, compass points, measurement, and scale, among others. Additionally, students can hear Nadia Wheatley talk about how she has been involved in community environmental protection activities to clean up the My Place creek and environment.

TheGeographysectionaddstothe existing History and English teaching strategies and creates an extensive multi-discipline, multimodal resource. Visit the My Place for Teachers website www.myplace.edu.au, and the ACTF shop www.actf.com.au/shop to order the My Place package.

Wa schools benefit from using actf multimedia resources

The Department of Education Western Australia has been adapting ACTF resources for use in their online environment within the teacher portal. Each resource has been adapted to cater for the varying needs of WA teachers and formatted so that numerous worksheets and videos can be accessed on a variety of platforms and locations and used in an interactive manner.

To cater for the varying and constantly evolving computer setups that a school may have, each video clip is now available in twoformats:PCandMac,andformattwoissuitableforiPads/iPhones/iPods.

The Australian Curriculum has now been tagged across all ACTF resources. Teachers are able to discover the ACTF resources by searching Australian Curriculum keywords, strands, sub strands and content descriptors. The resource metadata contains all relevant Australian Curriculum codes and also addresses keywords from the Western Australian syllabus.

Mapping the Australian Curriculum for teachers to use in planning documents has also been a priority. Within each resource, teachers can access a supporting document that features a list of the Australian Curriculum codes that are specifically addressed within that particular resource, which strand/sub-strand they are a part of, related ScOT terms and which activity they are addressed in. This list can be downloaded and then extracted and placed into a teacher’s programming and planning documents.
