DOUBLE SHEAR DOWELMeadow Burke’s Double Shear Dowel range of connectors offerssignificant advantages over plain dowels. Each connector is atwo-part assembly comprising a sleeve and a dowel component.Installation is a fast and accurate process and drilling of eitherformwork or concrete is not required. The sleeve is simply nailedto the formwork ensuring subsequent alignment with the dowel,which is essential for effective movement.

These connectors are manufactured from stainless steel to ensurea high degree of corrosion resistance with no requirement foradditional protection.

The Double Shear Dowel is the original two-part, double dowel,shear load connector with the two dowels manufactured fromDuplex stainless steel bar. The dowel component can move longitudinally within the sleeve to accommodate movement. Theconnector is available in 10 standard sizes and has designcapacities from approximately 20kN to more than 950kN. Thelarger connectors can be used in joints up to 60mm wide, whilelarger joints can be accommodated using special dowels. Pleasecontact our Engineering Department for further information.

DOUBLE SHEAR DOWEL–QThe Double Shear Dowel–Q shear load connector uses the samedowel component as the Double Shear Dowel, but the cylindricalsleeve is contained within a rectangular box section to allow lateral movement in addition to the longitudinal movement. There are nine standard sizes, which have designcapacities from approximately 30kN to more than 950kN.

OUR SOLUTIONS TO JOINTSIn most cases dowelled or keyed joints can be replacedby joints incorporating Double Shear Dowels. These con-nectors are more effective at transferring load and allowing movement to take place, easier to fix on site andcan prove a more cost-effective solution.

The Double Shear Dowel connectors can be used formovement joints in floor slabs, suspended slabs, and for replacing double columns and beams at structuralmovement joints. Applications in civil engineering includejoints in bridge parapets, bridge abutments and diaphragmwall construction.

REINFORCEMENT DETAILS

Local reinforcement is required around eachconnector to guarantee that the forces are trans-ferred between the connectors and the concrete.Correct detailing in accordance with appropriatedesign codes and the recommendations provided here will ensure ESD, ESDQ, ED andStaisil connectors attain their full capacity.

The tables show proposals for the type and spacingof the main reinforcement, together with details ofreinforcement above and below the connectors.

INSTALLATION PROCEDUREThe two-part assembly of all shear connectors removes the need for drilling formwork on site, supportingdowel bars and fitting debonding sleeves and end caps, making the installation process both fast and accurate.

Notes:(i) Where deep concrete pours are proposed, the installation will require further consideration.

More robust fixing of the sleeve and dowel components will be necessary to avoid displacement during placing of the concrete.

Nail the sleeve component to the shuttering ensuring that the sleeve is correctly orientatedfor the direction of the load. Check that theminimum spacing and edge distances are not

exceeded. The label prevents debris from enter-ing into the sleeve aperture and should not beremoved at this stage.

Fix the local reinforcement in position around thedowel component together with any other reinforcement that is required, ensuring that thecorrect cover to the reinforcement is main-tained. Pour the concrete to complete the instal-lation of the shear connector.

When the concrete has achieved sufficientstrength, strike the shuttering.

Position compressible joint filler of the appropri-ate width, for applications where movement isexpected between the two sections of concrete.

Push the dowel component through the joint filler(if applicable) until it is fully located in the sleevecomponent. It may be necessary to tap the dowelcomponent to overcome the dimple, which pinchholds the dowel in the sleeve and prevents dislo-cation when the concrete is vibrated.

Fix the local reinforcement in position around the sleeve component together with any otherreinforcement that is required, ensuring that thecorrect cover to the reinforcement is maintained.
