1. STRUCTURE

The KOBELCO COMPACT SEAL is composed of an AFT SEAL, which prevents stern tube lubricant oil leakage outside the ship as well as seawater from entering the stern tube, and

a FORWARD SEAL which prevents stern tube lubricant oil leakage into the engine room, There is also a Double Security Type aft seal with a built-in back-up seal,

1.1 AFT SEAL The AFT SEAL can be broadly divided into the casing, which is fixed to the hull, and the

chrome steel liner, which is fixed to the propeller boss and rotates with the propeller shaft The casing is composed of three kinds of metal rings; flange ring, intermediate ring and cover ring, which are tightened to each other with bolts. Three or four sealing rings are assembled between the metal rings with their pointed ends (lip section) touching the chrome steel liner. The lips are pressed hard against the rotating liner and maintain a

sealing effect through water pressure, oil pressure, elasticity of the sealing ring and tightening force of the springs.

The sealing rings are numbered 1, 2, 3, and 3S in order from the seawater side. The No.1 and No.2 sealing rings close out seawater, while the No.1 sealing ring also has the function of protecting the inside of the stern tube from foreign matter in the seawater. Lubricant oil in the stern tube is sealed in with the No.3 sealing ring.

The Double Security Type has an additional construction of the No.3S sealing ring and the No.3

intermediate ring on the Standard Type. If the No.3 sealing ring is damaged, the No.3S sealing

ring can be immediately brought into service by closing the valves on the oil lines to the oil chamber between the No.3 and No.3S sealing rings.

In the AFT Seal Oil Supply System, oil piping is constructed to connect the engine room to the oil chamber between the No.2 and No.3 sealing rings on the AFT SEAL. (This piping is adaptable for both Standard Type and Double Security Type seals as an option.)

1.2 FORWARD SEAL The FORWARD SEAL is of similar construction to the AFT SEAL except that it is

composed of two sealing rings. The sealing rings are numbered 4 and 5 in order from the stern tube. The No.4 sealing ring seals the lubricant oil in the stern tube. The forward

chrome steel liner is tightened with bolts to the split clamp ring mounted to the propeller

shaft.

All KOBELCO COMPACT SEALS are the same shape and are available in two types of

material; VITON (flororic rubber) and NBR (nitrile-butadiene rubber). VITON sealing rings

have particularly excellent heat resistant properties. The shape of our sealing rings has a unique KOBELCO design. Therefore, be sure to

request KOBELCO COMPACT SEALS when you replace sealing rings for maintenance or repair.

2. LUBRICATION

2.1 LUBRICANT OIL Refer to the list of recommended lubricant oils on pages 18

and 19 to select an appropriate lubricant oil for the stern tube ~c CC~ bearings.

The lubricant oils in the list have been confirmed as

applicable for our sealing rings. However, confirmation tests will be made on request for lubricant oils not listed. The appropriate lubricant oil viscosity is approximately SAE 30.

2.2 OILING 2.2.1. Stern Tube

There are two methods for oiling the stern tube; through gravity tank(s) or by forced circulation with pumps.

a FOLLOW Set the oiling pressure 0.30kg/cm2 higher than the seawater pressure applied V to the center of the shaft at full load conditions.

In cases where both high and low level tanks are provided, use the high tank for deep draft conditions and the low tank in shallow draft conditions. Follow

CAUTION the operating instructions for the stern tube lubrication system published by

the shipbuilder for switching over from the high and low level tanks.

For the Low Pressure System, the stern tube lubricant oil pressure can be the CAUTION same or lower than the seawater pressure (Pst ~Psw). Check the builder's

instructions for the lubrication system before use.

2.2.2. Aft Seal * In the case where there is no oil piping from the engine room to the oil chamber between the No.2 and No.3 sealing rings in the AFT SEAL, feed lubricant oil during docking to the No. 1/2 and No.2/3 sealing chambers through the oiling holes on the No.1 and No.2 intermediate rings. (AFT Seal Oil Supply-None. See Cover.)

In the case where oil piping is installed, the oiling pressure must be FOLLOW maintained at least 0.30kg/cm2 lower than the seawater pressure applied to

the center of the shaft under the actual aft draft. (See cover: AFT Seal Oil

Supply-Exist.)

Accordingly, it is also necessary to change the oiling pressure with changes

in the aft draft due to loading conditions. For details, refer to the operating

instructions published by the shipbuilder. Feed lubricant oil to the oil chamber

between the No.1 and No.2 sealing rings before undocking through the No.1

intermediate ring oiling hole.

2.2.3 FORWARD SEAL

* There are two methods for oiling the chamber between the No.4 and NO.5 sealing rings on the FORWARD SEAL: gravity tank and forced circulation method.

In the case of the gravity tank method, a circulator is installed in the chamber between the No.4 and No.5 sealing rings. Set the oil level 400mm - 500mm higher than the top of the casing for the circulation of the lubricant oil. If the setting position is too high it may cause insufficient circulation.

~ CAUTION Observe the oil level and add or remove oil as necessary.

In the case of the forced circulation method, generally, the FORWARD SEAL

3 receives oil through a line that branches off of the main oiling line to the stern

~ CAUTION tube. However, for smooth circulation, the valve (orifice) of the branch line _ must be checked to see that the pressure is not too high or low. Also, check

the oil circulation in the sight glass.

2.3 OIL PRESSURE TEST

~ * After flushing the stern tube and piping system, close the stern tube drain valve

, CAUTION and feed lubricant oil to the stern tube.

• In cases where both high and low level tanks are installed, use the low level tank.

<Procedure for Standard Type seal> CD Feed oil from the tank to the stern tube. W Open the drain plugs for the oil chamber between the No.2 and No.3 sealing rings

for the AFT SEAL and the No.4 and NO.5 sealing rings for the FORWARD SEAL, and check for any oil leakage.

® Feed oil to the oil chamber between the No.1 and the No.2 sealing rings on the AFT SEAL. @) Check for any leakage from the No.1 sealing ring and the drain plug for the #2 /3 oil

chamber. ~ ® Close the drain plug for the oil chamber between the No.2 and No.3 sealing rings and ~ CAUTION feed oil into the chamber. Check that the oil level does not drop below the top plug.

In the case of the AFT Seal Oil Supply system, conduct oiling with the valve on the oiling line open. However, close the valve after oiling. Otherwise, rear leakage may occur from the No.2 sealing ring if the oil pressure is high.

® Close the drain plug for the #4/5 oil chamber and feed oil to the chamber. (J) Check for any leakage from the No.5 sealing ring and the vicinity of the clamp ring.

chamber on the FORWARD SEAL and check for any leakage.

® Close the drain plug for the #3/3S oil chamber on the AFT SEAL, then open the valve -;-- ,-

on the #3/3S oiling line to feed oil into the #3/3S oil chamber.

@ Open the drain plug for the #2/3 oil chamber and check for leakage from the hole.

® Feed oil to the #1/2 oil chamber on the AFT SEAL.

® Check for any leakage from the No.1 sealing ring and the drain plug for the #2/3 oil chamber.

([) Close the drain plug on the #2/3 oil chamber and feed oil to the chamber. Check that

the oil level does not drop below the top plug.

In the case of the AFT Seal Oil Supply, conduct oiling with the valve on the oiling line

open.

Close the valve after oiling. Otherwise, oil leakage may occur from the No.2 sealing

ring if the oil pressure is high.

® Close the drain plug on the #4/5 oil chamber and feed oil to the chamber.

® Check for any leakage from the No.5 sealing ring and the vicinity of the clamp ring.

CAUTION * In the case where there is a large leakage, it is important to investigate the

cause. After completing the oil pressure test, check that all plugs are completely tightened and secure them with locking wire.

3. WEAR-DOWN GAUGE

The wear-down gauge is used to indirectly

determine whether there is an abnormality

with the stern tube bearing metal by

measuring the variation in the clearance

between the stern tube bearing and propeller

shaft. Measurements are taken at the oiling

hole (TOP) and drain hole (BOTTOM) of the AFT

SEAL. The initial measurement is taken upon

completion of the ship building with the

shafting, propellers and seals fully installed.

Measurements thereafter should be taken

during docking and the value measured should be ~ompared with previous measurements. When the seals are opened or the shaft is removed

leasurements should be taken before and after opening the seals. All measurements are taken with a regular turning position; such as the No.1 cylinder piston of the main engine in the top

position, or "A" blade of the propeller in the top position.

When the chrome steel liner is skimmed with the shaft removed, the before CAUTION and after values will increase the amount of the skimming.

It is important to take measurements in the same position at all times. CAUTION Alignment marks are on the oiling and drain holes for measurement.

Alignment marks are also on the wear-down gauge. Conduct measurements with both marks aligned.

CAUTION Remove the copper packing for measurement.

<Underwater inspection specifications> There is a hole on the covering for measuring wear down. All other items

are the same as above. Divers should use the special spanner included in the accessory tools for underwater inspections.

4. REPAIR

After a long period of use the seals will require repair such as replacement of sealing rings or

other parts due to the wear on sealing rings and chrome steel liners. Repair methods include

replacement repair and bonding repair where sealing rings are replaced as an emergency measure.

4.1 REPLACEMENT REPAIR Replacement of seals is generally done during docking when the propeller and propeller

shaft have been removed. After the seal housing has been detached from the hull, the sealing rings, chrome steel liners and other parts are replaced or repaired.

Replacement of seals can recover functions similar to new. The aft and forward chrome steel liners can be reused by repeated skimming until the allowable limit shown in the table below. When there is no skimming allowance remaining, the liner must be replaced.

4.2 BONDING REPAIR Generally done while the ship is in dock, bonding repair is the method of replacing the

sealing rings with the shaft and the propeller in place by vulcanizing the new sealing rings using a special bonding device while the ship is generally in dock. This method eliminates

the need to move the propeller or propeller shaft to replace the sealing rings and allows emergency repair of the aft and forward sealing rings in a short time. Bonding repairs are

carried out by KOBELCO MARINE ENGINEERING or its authorized agents.

To conduct bonding repairs on the AFT SEAL while afloat, it is necessary to raise the hull to the bow in trim and propeller shaft approximately 1 meter above sea level. It also requires the construction of scaffolding at least 300mm above sea level.

5. MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

Conduct maintenance and inspections in accordance with the table below. Inspections not only prevent damage to stern tube systems but also reduce damage to a minimum in the event of an abnormality. Further, if an abnormality occurs, use the attached facsimile form to contact KOBElCO MARINE ENGINEERING.

7. POINTS THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED

During installation: * Check alignments of the seal to the hull. * Make sure waste, dust, paint, etc. do not enter the

seal. * Do not cause shock to the seal. * Do not put heavy items on top of the seal. * Do not expose the seal to high temperatures when welding etc.

Before oiling: * Flush out any waste, dust, paint, etc. from the piping. * Do not use volatile oils such as gasoline or toluene for cleaning sealing rings.

Before turning shaft: * Fill the sealing system with the designated lubricant oil. (Refer to the recommended

lubricant oil list on pages 18 and 19.) * Set the oil pressure of each part as designated. (Refer to the piping diagram and

operating instructions published by the shipbuilder.)

For dry-docking: * When using the AFT Seal Oil Supply, close the valve on the oil supply line. (When the

seawater pressure decreases, the lubricant oil in the #2/3 oil chamber may leak outside the ship due to the lack of seawater pressure.)

Requesting bonding repair: * When the seal requires bonding repair, ask for "KOBELCO MARINE

ENGINEERING" or its authorized agent.

8. USEFUL HINTS

~ REFERENCE

. Use of Distance Ring:

Generally grooves are generated or

grow on the outer diameter surface of

the chrome steel liner due to friction with

the sealing rings. At times of bonding repair,

the presence of such grooves may result in the sealing ring not working properly. In such

cases it is recommended that a distance ring

be installed so that the sealing ring can be -- ositioned in an area where there are no grooves.

The attachment and removal of distance rings will affect the length of the CAUTION flange bolt. Therefore, make sure to use an appropriate bolt. Further, distance
