Summary of Equivalency Testing

• The Dot Hill Systems 2U24 models 2322 (iSCSI), 2522(SAS) and 2722 (FC) have demonstrated NEBS equivalency in all aspects except the 2” drop test which has not been completed.

The EMC and Safety testing was equivalent to the NEBS GR-CORE-1089 testing and is therefore compliant to this standard

The Environmental testing was equivalent to NEBS GR-CORE-63 testing and is therefore compliant to this standard

It is expected that the models 2322, 2522 and 2722 will pass NEBS testing and are NEBS Compliant.

EMI TESTING Electrical Fast Transient (EFT) 2.2

– One-minute EFT Burst applications of each polarity positive and negative are applied at:

» 0.5kV for Data ports (Ethernet, SAS)

» 1kV for AC and DC Ports Conclusion –

– The Dot Hill EMI test criteria is basically identical to the NEBS test criteria. Dot Hill has designed the 2322, 3522 and 2722 using the 5730 as a base line. The same power supplies, which were previously NEBS certified in the 5730, are used, which is the primary component tested in the EMI testing. Dot Hill has passed the ITE EMI testing with no issues. The 2322, 2522 and 2722 will pass the NEBS EMI testing.

NEBS Lightning and AC Power Fault» First Level Lightning Surge: ±2000 @ 1000A (4) repetitions each polarity» Second Level Lightning Surge: ±6000 @ 3000A (1) repetition each polarity» AC power fault: 1000Vrms @ 1A, 60 applications» The design of the 2322, 2522 and 2722 are the same as the 5730 as far as

lightning and AC Power Fault protection, and will pass all NEBS testing. The 5730 is NEBS certified.

Electrical Safety– The main NEBS criteria is that the product must pass the UL 60950-1 Product

safety testing. The 2322, 2522 and 2722 FC were thoroughly tested at UL and passed. The product safety designs for the 2322, 2522, 2722 FC and 5730 are the same. The 5730 is NEBS certified. The 2322, 2522 and 2722 FC will pass all NEBS Electrical Safety testing.

Bonding and Grounding– The bonding and grounding of the 2322, 2522 and 2722 FC product are the same

as the 5730. The 5730 is NEBS certified. The embedded power sources in the 2322, 2522 and 2722 FC product are equivalent to those used in the 5730, and these power sources will pass the short circuit test. The NEBS short circuit testing was conducted on the 2722FC product at Dot Hill and passed. The Bonding and Grounding testing will pass.

DC Power Port Tests– These tests are conducted on the Power Supplies, which are the same as those used

in the model 5730, which is NEBS Certified. This testing will pass.

Altitude Testing– NEBS requirements (ref GR-63-CORE Issue 3), Operating Altitude – Section 5.1.3

» +55ºC 1,800 m (5,904 ft) – 8 hrs (Section 5.1.3 states that increasing the high temperature test from +55°C to +61°C, accounts for the thermal altitude effects at 1,800 m. This equivalence testing is not done by the test lab for products with hard drives, but a pre-test using the 61°C is the method used by manufacturers to show equivalence prior to the actual NEBS testing.)

Random Vibration, Packaged Random Vibration Testing, Packaged

– NEBS: (ref GR-63-CORE Issue 3 Section 5.4.3 Transportation Vibration) 0.01 g2/Hz from 5-20 Hz, -3 dB/Octave from 20-200 Hz for 30 minutes in each axis. Equivalent to 0.782 Grms. This is taken from the ETSI spec.

– ETSI requirements (ref EN 300 019-2-3 V2.2.2 Test spec T3.2) 1.0 m2/sec3 from 5 to 20 Hz, 0.3 m2/sec3 from 20 to 200 Hz for 30 minutes in each axis.

– DHS: See PSD curves for horizontal and vertical testing below.

Conclusion – The DHS vertical PSD curve is more stringent than NEBS and ETSI.

Other GR-63 Tests Spatial Requirements – These are shelf level products and are not applicable

to the spatial criteria.|

Temperature Margin – The temperature margin testing starts with the normal maximum +55ºC operating temperature, and then increases the operating temperature first to +60ºC and finally to +65ºC. During EVT temperature testing, the 2722 product quit operating at +67ºC. This product has adequate operating temperature margin to pass this NEBS testing.

Fan Cooled Equipment – These products are very similar in airflow design to the model 5730. Both these products and the model 5730 use the same power supplies, which contain the fans for cooling these products. The 5730 passes these NEBS tests. These products will also pass this testing.

Surface Temperature – These products ares similar in generated heat to our Model 5730, which passes this testing. These products will also pass this testing.

Fire Spread – These products were designed to meet this criteria. The chassis is a sheet metal design, and thus encloses any internal burning. These products are very similar to the model 5730, which has passed this testing. All products use the same power supplies and have similar printed wiring boards. The hard drives for this product are 2.5” versus the 5730 which has 3.5” disks. However, the basic combustible materials are the same for all products and these products will pass this testing.

Fan Failure –These products use the same power supplies as used on the model 5730. The airflow designs of all products are basically the same. These products were tested for fan failures and passed the testing. The model 5730 passed the NEBS testing. This product will pass the NEBS testing.

Smoke and Self-Extinguishment Criteria - These products are designed to meet this criteria. The chassis is a sheet metal design, and thus encloses an internal fire. Needle Flame – These products were designed to pass this testing. Components were chosen with the required fire burn ratings to pass this testing. Most of the components are the same as those used in the model 5730 which passes this NEBS test. These products will pass this testing.

Airborne Contaminants – Mixed Flow Gas - These products are designed to meet this criteria. The product airflow is similar to the model 5730, which has passed this testing. All products use the same power supplies and have similar printed wiring boards. The hard drives for these products are 2.5” versus the 5730 which has 3.5” disks. However, the basic design concepts are the same and therefore these products will pass this testing.

Acoustic Noise – These products have been tested for acoustic noise and meets the NEBS criteria. This product and the model 5730 both use the same power supplies, which is the primary noise source, and the 5730 passes this testing. This product will pass this testing.

Illumination – These products are very similar to the model 5730 as far as illumination. The model 5730 passes this testing, and this product will also pass this testing.
