Senior Citizen Magazine (EEUU) Marzo 2011

THE ENGLISH PATIENT By: Jillian Canney Set in the middle of the idyllic island of Ibiza, a place renowned worldwide for its beauty, light and healing properties, The Santa Eulalia Senior Complex, proves to be the ideal option for the care of the elderly Ibiza. One of the four Balearic islands in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. A place of such breath taking beauty and tranquillity, it almost defies reason that it is primarily renowned for its discos and its nightlife scene. But for all its wild ways; and its fame of being a place for the young and the energetic, there is another side to the island that caters for a much wider- and in this case, elderly- public. Let me introduce you to a side of the island that- between you and me- remains a bit of a well-guarded secret. For Ibiza, as well as catering to the footloose and fancy free, welcomes the senior citizen with very open arms. Welcome to the Santa Eulalia Senior Complex- a recently inaugurated and modern centre for the care of the elderly. Equipped to the highest degree for the care of its residents, here is a place that has already gained a solid reputation as the premier senior complex in the Balearic Islands. Part of the Rosario Clinic HealthCare Group, it is the first choice for not only those that require full time medical care but also for those in need of a temporary haven for recuperation.

Indeed, set in a place of such astounding natural beauty, with its ideal climate year round and an infinite selection of cultural, historical and natural significance to enjoy, Ibiza, and more especially, the Santa Eulalia Complex would seem to be the perfect place for retirement. But what would I know…much better that we ask one of its beloved in-patients- Mrs Mollie Chandler, 93 years of age but believe you me, very much young at heart. Having settled on the island back in the sixties with her husband, Mollie is no stranger to Ibiza, having decided, as many do, that here was a place like no other, a place of beauty and magic. Together with her family, she lived the stuff of dreams, until however, with her children having flown the nest and with the passing of her beloved husband some years back after a long struggle with Alzheimers, Mollie was left with no choice but to consider giving up her beloved family abode to move to a private nursing home. But what should have been a hard decision to make turned out easier than Mollie could have imagined- the Santa Eulalia Senior Complex was the logical answer to the conundrum. As the sole English native currently full time resident in the complex, and with a basic level of Spanish, one would have doubts as to the as to the ease with which an absolute English lady such as Mollie could happily settle into a place full of strangers, some terminally ill, others with mental and physical disabilities but all over retirement age and all communicating in a different language. But it seems, after talking at length with our protagonist, that life is just grand in the Santa Eulalia Complex. Round the clock care, an enviable timetable of social activities and with the latest technology in place to cater for all its patients needs, the Complex is the ideal location for both recuperation and long time nursing care. Even to the untrained eye, there is no doubt that the senior community of the Complex and their families are more than content with the in house care. Mollie, fresh from a meeting with the Complex chaplin, welcomes us into her living area. A good-sized room filled with her own furniture and more importantly, her personal items, photos, books, her memories,- her life. In one corner of the room her motorized scooter sits still, waiting for the turn of the key as the sun sets for Mollie to go on her daily visit to the Complex Gardens; her favourite corner of the grounds filled with trees and flowers typical of the island and wonderful views of the Old Town of Ibiza. Between arts and crafts, daily medical care and excursions to the countryside not to mention the possibility of daily physiotherapy or a dip in the indoor heated pool, Mollieʼs- and the rest of the Complex residents- days are full to bursting with things to do. Just the way they like it. By the end of my guided tour of the facilities, Iʼm left in no doubt- here is a place where love, trust and comfort sit happily side by side with professionalism, cleanliness and the highest level of nursing care. The only thing Mollie misses immersed in such a Spanish world? A traditional British Sunday dinner- roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, carrots, peas and parsnips- all smothered in thick gravy. But worry not, readers, for that has just been resolved, for tomorrow, unbeknown to her, she will eat to her heartʼs content- because Iʼm bringing her the full monty from my own kitchen.

Canine Therapy working wonders at the Santa Eulalia Senior Complex, Ibiza

2011-09-11

• The Santa Eulalia Senior Residential Complex introduces the Podenco Ibicenco to their third age therapy programme • High rates of success among the senior citizens have already been reported

Ibiza, April 2011 (FIX Ibiza). - With their intelligent and fiercely loyal nature, the Podenco Ibicenco, the Ibiza Hound, was the obvious choice for La Associació de Cans Eivissencs Solidaris- the Ibiza Hound Association, when it came to picking a breed for their new therapy sessions with the in-patients of the Santa Eulalia Senior Residential Complex in Ibiza. The Complex, which prides itself on maintaining high morale amongst its residents, devised the programme after research on canine therapy showed positive effects on senior citizens in similar centres elsewhere, with results proving that contact and interaction with the animal kingdom vastly improved the wellbeing of most patients involved with the treatment. In collaboration with the Canine Association on the island, the Senior Complex now runs the therapy sessions for its residents three times a month. The initiative encourages visual and tactual stimulation through canine interaction, and has already shown positive results among the elderly at the residential centre, with carers

reporting an increase in awareness and general wellbeing amongst the patients since the introduction of the programme some months ago. The Podenco Ibicenco. The island of Ibiza in the Balearic Islands is famed for many things, amongst them its beauty, its nightlife and its world heritage. But it is also the natural habitat for the Podenco Ibicenco, the Ibizan Hound, sa Ca Eivissenc- the graceful hunting dog that has roamed the island since 654 a.d and which these days continues to both live in packs in the wilds of the north of Ibiza and more commonly, as a domestic pet in many families of Ibiza, France and, if less frequently, further afield. Honey and cream coloured, the characteristics of the agile, lean hunter have shown it to be both an affectionate and fiercely loyal pet. Antonio Pedro Marí, President of the Ibiza Canine Society, described the podenco as ‘a very versatile dog’, one which ‘in times gone by, was believed to be untamable, but is now seen as a very obedient and loyal animal.’ Graceful and athletic in the one, the hound is an attractive one, with its long neck, laid back shoulders and striking amber ears. A bit of a clown, generally quiet, if quick on the update as far as a rabbit is concerned, the Ibizan Hounds with their active and engaging nature are great with children and therefore a popular choice with local Ibiza families. All in all, they seemed the perfect choice for the Canine Therapy Sessions at the Santa Eulalia Senior Residential Complex.

The Therapy Sessions Old age is something that comes to us all, a stage of life that can prove a complicated time for many, often requiring more than the average prescription medicine to encourage better wellbeing. It is not uncommon that in-patients at any residential centre experience some level of difficulty adapting to their new surroundings. Loneliness can be rife as patients learn to live amongst new people, many of them with physical and mental limitations. Staff at the Santa Eulalia Complex, fully aware of these difficulties, devised the plan to introduce canine therapy to their rehabilitation programme after researching the subject together with La Associació de Cans Eivissencs Solidaris and its president, Antonio Marí. ‘Physical contact with the animals has a way of stimulating the older generation, encouraging a better sense of emotional, mental and by proxy, physical state,’ is how Mari describes the one-hour sessions with the podencos. On a thrice-monthly basis, volunteers of the association take a number of the dogs to the residential centre where patients are encouraged to make physical contact with them. Trained to the best of their abilities, the presence of the dogs is a familiar reminder of days gone by for many of the complex residents, the majority of them being natives of the island. That sensation of petting the animals is one that seems to resonate well within the group, bringing a different energy to the room- dog whisperer style, if you will. Currently, sessions with the podencos take place every ten days at the Senior Complex with volunteers from La Associació de Cans Eivissencs Solidaris, the local Ibiza association of the podenco, bringing along 3-4 dogs at a time.

Marta Vilás, Director of the Santa Eulalia Senior Residential Complex, spoke from personal experience of the podenco when she described them as ‘ a highly intelligent animal, and one which has been in the lives of many of our in patients from an early day. This one-on-one contact with the animals in the centre has led to what she describes as ‘ very good results, one example of which is the reaction amongst our Alzheimer patients, who, whilst unaware of what day it is, wake up happier after the podenco sessions, asking about their their visit.’ ‘After sessions, we see a notable drop in complaints of pain from the patients, and instead an increase in anecdotes about their experience with the dogs.’ That can only be a good thing, bring on the stories. The Podenco Ibicenco, it would seem, is one more string to the bow of Ibiza, one more aspect of that very magical island, added to the list of ‘Things to make you smile in Ibiza’. That lovely, unending list….
