Every day counts – school attendance

We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a

great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.

Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one

day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll

have missed more than a year of school.

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts

them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.

Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss

school, there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind:

* Speak with your classroom teacher and find out what work your child

needs to do to keep up.

* Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child

completes the plan.

Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your

classroom teacher early as early as possible.

From 1 March 2014, new laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending

students to school without an acceptable reason.

If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher

know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

Thank you to the parents who helped at the working bee. A lot of work was done in the SAKG garden which was much appreciated. The kitchen classes still need volunteers for grades 5 and 6. If any families have extra produce growing in home gardens, the kitchen classes could always make use of donations. The students have been told to take a photo of home gardens to showcase their skills. Here is a photo of Kylah and her avocado seedling.

Specialist’s Corner

Physical Education

It has been huge term so far for the students of Dorset Primary School

in Physical Education. We are blessed with a sensational range of

equipment available for use both in and out of class time. It has

allowed us to focus on the development of specific motor skills for the

first half of term one.

Students in the middle and upper school have been working hard to

consolidate a range of throwing, catching and fielding skills. They are

continuously challenged with competitive games in which teamwork

and personal effort is needed for success.

Performance improvement in the lower school has been astounding in

the first half of the term where moving safely in designated space has

been the main focus. Dorset Primary preps have improved to a point

where they are safely and competently engaging in games in which

they must move at a fast pace to achieve an objective. Grades one and

two are now moving into throwing and catching with beanbags after

working on dodging, jumping and relays.

Every student should be very proud of their progress in Physical

Education at school and I look forward to sharing the fun of sport with

them!

Thanks Jay McLellan

Transition News: Attention Parents of Grade 6 Students! As we approach the half way mark of Term One it’s time to begin thinking about where your grade six child will attend secondary school. For some it may be a simple process of following in the footsteps of an older sibling, for others this will be an exciting new chapter! The application process, including the distribution of all relevant forms and information material will start in the beginning of Term Two. Something to keep in mind is that the deadline for returning enrolment forms will be in mid-May. In the coming weeks I will include updates and information about the enrolment process as well as other tips and advice!

Miss Hinkins Transition Coordinator

Dear Dorset Community Working Bee What an outstanding turn out. So much was achieved! The school grounds are really looking amazing. Thank you so much for the support. Contributing to our school helps all improvements and growth to occur. Again much appreciated! Attendance Policy As of March 2014 a Wellbeing Officer will be involved in a child’s attendance or lack of at the school. A $70.00 fine may occur if the absences are not fully explained. Please read the attendance letter and policy accompanying this newsletter carefully. Life Education Life Education will be commencing Thursday 6th March. This is an invaluable hands on program that touches on various issues that concern our children. If you would like more information regarding Life Education please contact your class teacher. Please ensure you have paid the required fee so your child can attend. Car Parking The parking inspector from the Maroondah Council has indicated that cars double parked in the teachers carpark will be booked. Please do not double park there because it is a safety issue for the children. Parking inspectors will commence booking very soon so please be aware that this will happen. Tiqbiz Our school is now using an App to send instant messages, newsletters and notices. The Tiqbiz app will help our school keep parents fully informed and up-to-date with newsletters, notices, news and events. It’s easy to use and also has the benefit of helping reduce our paper consumption by printing less. The first step is to download tiqbiz to your phone, tablet, computer … or all of them. Search for : tiqbiz Remember to click “allow” notifications when asked. This will allow us to send you important alert notices. For technical information please see the school for a flyer. PD John, Stuart, Michael G, Annalisa and Marnie are attending a two day course titled ‘Kids Matter’. This program highlights meeting children’s needs both socially and emotionally. It will be great to see the teachings of this program implemented at our school. Dorset PS has a very strong welfare program already in place but any extra enhancement is always welcomed. Mr Vann Parents wishing to access Mr Vann can place a note in his red box at the front office or speak to myself. Mr Vann is only here Mondays and Tuesdays so to ensure your request takes place it would be great if you could let me know so as I can follow it up! Fete The amount of work already going into our fete is awesome. Bec and her team are really doing a sensational job. If you can offer any assistance please let us know. Leadership Morning Tea What a turn out! How wonderful to see so many family members coming along to the badge ceremony. It is so important that the home/school partnership is occurring in order to benefit the children. This was definitely evident on Monday Classroom Helpers Steve and I ran the first session of the parent helpers on Monday. It had a fabulous feel and was very well attended. Thanks so much to the attendees and Mr Lynch. He kindly reminded me that he and I have at least 50 years experience between us. Great! Have a relaxing and truly enjoyable long weekend. Kind regards, Palma Coppa Assistant Principal
