Dorothy M. Johnson, of Huron, died Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at her home. Her funeral service was held at 11 AM Monday, April 4th, at First UnitedMethodist Church. Burial was held at 11:30 AM MDT Tuesday, April 5th at Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis.

Dorothy Mae Johnson was born March 8, 1929, in Sioux City, IA, to Charles R. Polly and Lillian M. (Curry) Polly. She attended Yankton schools and wasgraduated from Yankton College in 1953.

She married Eugene E. Johnson on August 20, 1950, in Yankton. Two children graced their marriage in 1959 and 1960 (C. Wade and Brice H.). Dorothytaught school in Philip, Lane, and Huron public schools and served as Educational Assistant at First United Methodist Church in Huron. Dorothy was amember of the First United Methodist Church for 60 years, where she participated in a number of circles of the Women’s Society, and served on the Pastor­Parish Relations Committee and numerous other boards and church committees. She belonged to both The Originals and Clueless book clubs, FasciaExtension Club, PEO Chapter BE, and was a member of the Library Board and the Literacy Council.

Reading was important to Dorothy. She ensured that her sons and grandchildren knew how to read, and she volunteered to teach adults through the LiteraryCouncil in Huron.

Her husband, Eugene, and brothers­in­law, Wayne, John, and Roland, all served in either Europe or the Pacific during World War II, and both her sons andone grandson (James Brice) served in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene; her sister, Elaine (with whom she shared a birthday); Elaine’s husband, Ronald; a grandnephew, Robert L. Engle of Sioux City, IA; a sister­in­law, Goldie and her husband, Everett Seiders and their son, Joe, of Lebanon, OR; a brother­in­law,Myrl Johnson and his wife, Gladys of Glenwood, MN, their son, Brian of Detroit Lakes, MN, their daughter, Marlene (Orville) Ruttgers of Hibbing, MN, theirdaughter, Myrna (Laurence House) of Reno, NV, and her daughter and son, Ganell and Johnny; a brother­in­law, Roland D. Johnson of Custer; a brother­in­law, John V. Johnson of Ethan, and their son, Joseph and his granddaughter, Nichole Ruff of Mitchell; and a brother­in­law, Wayne H. Johnson and his wife,Helen of Salem, OR.

She is survived by two sons, Charles Wade (Kathryn) of Custer, and Brice Howard, of Ft. Leavenworth, KS; four grandchildren, James Brice (Mary)Johnson, Kallyn Dorothy (Michael) Harencak, William Wade Johnson, and Benjamin Brice Johnson; one great­grandson, Joshua James Harencak; abrother, Allen Polly (Joyce) of Platte; a sister­in­law, Lorraine Johnson of Spring Grove, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
