Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite

a season in the history of Dorking FC, both on and off the field.

More of that in a moment, but first I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Worcester Park FC. We hope you have an enjoyable stay and look forward to a competitive game played in the right spirit.

After more than two years of enforced absence, the Chicks are back playing football in the town and ready to push forward with our plans for developing our great old club in close collaboration with the local community. I would like to thank Marc White, Jeremy Pain and all the Dorking Wanderers staff for making the fantastic and picturesque ground that they’ve built here available to us. Both clubs are working together now to promote grassroots football in the local area with the utmost enthusiasm.

And the future is exceptionally bright.

We now know that Mole Valley District Council has committed to rebuilding our traditional ground at Meadowbank and we will return home at the start of next season, in a fantastic new stadium with a state-of-the-art artificial grass pitch. As well as once again being the home of the Chicks, with a clubhouse and our U18s and Ladies playing there, the new Meadowbank will also be the home venue for Wanderers, a training venue for 1000 young players

DORKING FC - BACK IN TOWN

a welcome from the chairman:

ALAN GOUT

in the local youth clubs, and the headquarters of Surrey FA - putting Dorking FC at the heart of a new hub for football in the county and giving a real boost to the town centre.

Credit must go to my colleagues on the board and the officers at Mole Valley District Council who saw the potential when we took over the club two years ago and have pursued the plan so enthusiastically.

There’s a lot to do before next season, but we can be confident that both Dorking FC and grassroots football in the local area generally is thriving with much to look forward to.

On the pitch, we welcomed Danny Fox as our new first team manager this summer. We are extremely fortunate to have recruited Danny, one of the most respected young coaches in Surrey who shares our vision and values for Dorking FC with a passion.

Our aim has been to make this a club where the team is a part of the community and one that local people can identify with as representative of the area. Already, over half our squad this season is from Dorking and the surrounding villages - and it’s been many years since the club has been able to say that.

Danny has spent the summer recruiting local players

who really want to play for Dorking as a nucleus of the squad, and blending them with the right sort of players from further afield - keen to play entertaining football, disciplined and dedicated - as well as putting foundations in place by working with the youth set up to make sure we will be bringing through some of the brightest young local talent. Many of the youth team are now training regularly with the first team and I’m sure you’ll be seeing more of them on the pitch during the course of the season.

So there’s plenty to look forward to. But, for the here and now, we hope you enjoy the game and your visit to Dorking FC today. Thank you for your support and we hope to see you here throughout the season.

Kind Regards

Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

managed a side that has created more chances in one game - but ultimately, our lack of finishing was costly.

On the positive side, it will only be a matter of time before this team finds its shooting boots and, when they do, I believe we will surprise more than a few.

I am more than confident in the strength of our squad moving forward. The pre-season draws against Windsor and Chertsey Town especially showed the capabilities and resolve of the squad, and if we can perform at the level we have against teams like that who play at a higher level than us, then I’m sure we will have a successful season.

I hope you enjoy the game.

Welcome to Westhumble for this evening’s game, our first home fixture of the 2016/17

season.

I’d particularly like to welcome Gary Taylor, the players and officials of Worcester Park. I’ve known Gary for a few years now from the scouting circuit and have come across our visitors many times, and they have always proven tough opponents. I’m sure this evening will be no different.

I was delighted to be given the opportunity to manage a club with such a proud history as Dorking FC, and to be a part of the exciting times the next few years will undoubtedly bring us. Pre-season has been challenging in many respects, as it always is, but there have been a vast number of positives as well - particularly with the emergence of young players such as Jack Wisbey, Jordon Boukhari and Ryan Lunn who have more than held their own already against older players with much more experience at this level of football. I’m sure it won’t be the last time these lads feature in this column.

We kicked off our season on Saturday against Farleigh Rovers and I was left both proud and disappointed following the game. Nobody likes to lose, especially on the opening day, but it was more upsetting to lose when I felt we dominated for the majority of the game. I don’t think I have played or

DFC PLAYER PROFILE:

JORDAN BOUKHARI

Having joined the Chicks this summer, Jordon Boukhari is a perfect model for the local player

pathway being created by Dorking FC and the newly formed Dorking Football Development Alliance.

As a schoolboy at The Ashcombe, Jordon played for the town’s grassroots youth clubs, St Martin’s and Dorking Saints, and then on to Dorkinians before moving off to university in Bournemouth.

Returning from Uni this summer, he now has the opportunity to represent his hometown club at Dorking FC.

“I got invited down to pre-season training by a friend who thought it would be a good set up for me with the new manager,” he says, “and things have

worked out well so far.”

With his passing, reading of the game and interceptions, Jordon has earned praise from Danny Fox as one of the young talents who has impressed and will continue to develop as part of the squad he’s building for the future.

As far as his own ambitions for the season are concerned, Jordon says it’s simple, “I want to win!” before adding “and I want to part of a squad where everyone works hard for each other.”

Asked about his first impressions of playing non-league football at this level, and it’s all positive. “I’ve lived here all my life,” he says, “going from St Martin’s to Dorking FC. And I just love it!”

Despite the disappointment of an opening day defeat, new boss Danny Fox will know

it’s unlikely the Chicks will dominate a game quite so comprehensively again and still come away empty handed.

Starting with seven players local to Dorking, the manager has spent the summer since his appointment rebuilding the team to develop local, youthful players, blending them with experience from further afield to create a side that will play disciplined and attractive football and build for the future.

The team started with intent and had the ball in the net as early as the eighth minute as a cross into the box bounced over the Farleigh keeper, only for the Referee to rule the goal out for a foul.

As the Dorking pressure built through high quality play, only a close range save and a goal line clearance stopped the Chicks from taking the lead.

Debutant striker George Knight had the ball in the Farleigh net on 32 minutes, only for the referee to chalk off a Dorking goal for the second time – for offside on this occasion.

As half time approached, the chances kept coming while, at the other end, the Chicks’ keeper Tom Day had yet to make a save.

There was little change after the break as Dorking mounted wave-after-wave of attacks, the best chances falling to Ryan Lunn who poked the ball just wide and George Knight who headed over the bar. It was an exciting start to the Danny Fox era but,

as the game wore on, there was always a sense that the Chicks may be made to pay for not taking their chances.

And so it proved, as Farleigh began to get a foothold in the game during the final ten minutes and took full advantage by grabbing a winner just before full time, to leave the young Chicks ruing their lack of clinical finishing.

But even in defeat, the style of play and quality of performances - particularly from locally-based defenders, 16 year old Jack Wisbey on his debut and club stalwart Russell Hartt – will have given the new boss plenty of encouragement for the season ahead.

Dorking FC: Day, Wisbey, Mothee, Boukhari, Hartt, Finn, R Lunn, Miller, Davies, Knight, Hunte.Subs – Belward, Webber, Watts, Russell, Vasishta.

Report by Roger Mahony

“Dorking teenager, Jack Wisbey, was one of the many strong performers on his debut.”

HANDS UP

FOR DORKING FC

The Chicks are recruiting volunteer Matchmakers to help run our home games back in the town

Dorking FC has launched a recruitment campaign for volunteers to help out

on match days, on either an occasional or regular basis.

The new team of volunteers, called Dorking Matchmakers, is being established to help us expand our operations as we come back to play our matches in the town this season, ahead of returning home to the new Meadowbank stadium next year.

Matchmakers will join a rota of community volunteers welcoming supporters to games at Westhumble, operating the turnstile, stewarding the car park and selling refreshments, among a range of tasks to make the Chicks’ home games run smoothly.

Club Chairman Alan Gout says, “Since coming in and turning round the club’s fortunes two years ago, Dorking FC has been run entirely on amateur principles - we’re all volunteers and none of the players are paid. This is the community’s football club, a part of the town for 136 years, and now we’re bringing it back to play in Dorking, the time is right to open things

Page 17: DORKING FC THE CHICKSfiles.pitchero.com/clubs/18447/J4Bz17uAQJKwZu1E3kwf... · ProKit Flyer_01.indd 1 15/03/2016 17:27. For every £2,000 you spend on teamwear ... squad moving forward

the idea of getting a little more involved where they live and meeting some local friends - young people, retired people, anyone who can spare a bit of time every now and then doing something sociable in their town. “There’s no regular commitment. We want to recruit as many people as possible so we can run a rota of volunteer Matchmakers, each getting involved in home games as much or as little as they want. If that appeals to you, just put your hands up and come and get involved.”

The team of volunteer Matchmakers is being put together to help run the Dorking FC games at Westhumble Playing Fields throughout this season, before moving with the club back to our ancestral home at Meadowbank when the new stadium is ready for 2017/8.

Anyone interested in joining the Dorking Matchmakers team is asked to contactJane Mahony by email via: [email protected].

up for the wider community to get involved and help make our match days special.”

To get the Matchmakers up and running, we have appointed Jane Mahony as Head of Volunteer Recruitment. Jane has plenty of experience with involving the community in their local football club - she is a founder and former Director of Brockham Badgers FC’s highly successful annual tournament which, over the past ten years, has established itself as one of the biggest and most popular youth football events in the south east, based entirely on local volunteers.

Jane says, “Dorking FC is a special club being run by the local community entirely in the interests of the local community, working to improve sport and sporting facilities in the area and boost the town centre by reviving Meadowbank. So we want as many local people as possible to get involved and make a success of match days.

“It’s an ideal opportunity for people who like

Dorking legend, Steve Lunn, the all time record appearance holder, with whom he jointly managed the club for two seasons from 2002. Steve is currently Under 18s Manager, and has already successfully brought through a number of talented local young players to the first team over the past two seasons.

Nick and Steve will run a youth squad fielding teams in the prestigious Ryman Youth League, where Dorking will compete against clubs such as Woking and Sutton United, and also the Southern Youth League.

Nick Torpey says “This is an exciting time for me, for young talent in the town and for everyone involved in football in Dorking. With our new first team manager Danny Fox also committed to developing local players, young players joining the U18s in Dorking will know they have the best possible chance of reaching their potential and going on to have a successful career with one or other of the town’s senior clubs.”

Any Under 18s interested in joining Dorking FC and the new Alliance squad for the coming season are asked to email Head of Youth Development Nick Torpey via [email protected].

NEW HEAD OF YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AS

DORKING’S UNDER 18sCOMBINE IN

RYMAN LEAGUE

Highly respected local coach Nick Torpey has joined Dorking FC as Head of Youth

Development.

Nick will lead a new-look youth set-up, combining the Dorking and Dorking Wanderers U18s into a single, unified squad for the town, run by the Chicks as part of the new Dorking Football Development Alliance.

With a UEFA B qualification, Nick Torpey is a popular figure on the local football scene in both youth and senior football. As a coach, Nick is familiar to many of the grassroots youth clubs in and around Dorking - including Dorkinians, Brockham Badgers, Holmbury Wolves and St Paul’s Panthers - where he has encouraged and developed many young players, passing on his knowledge of the game with his trademark enthusiastic and positive style. He is also well known to supporters of Dorking FC as a long-serving player with more than 300 appearances over ten years from 1996.

Chief Executive Jason Rabbetts says, “Nick Torpey has huge ability as a coach developing young players and his knowledge of youth football in Mole Valley is second to none. We’re really fortunate to have him return to the club as we push on with our vision of getting a conveyor belt of local players coming into the first team to represent their town, and creating a powerhouse of football development in Dorking in our progressive alliance with Wanderers.”

In the new role of Head of Youth Development, Nick will be renewing his partnership with another

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC

Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.

An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.

On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.

Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.

The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.

In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.

On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first

Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.

The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.

We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.

The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.

An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.

Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY:

WORCESTER PARK FC

Worcester Park Football Club is based at Green Lane and is part of the

Worcester Park Athletic Club.

The name Worcester Park Athletic Club is a bit misleading as there is no athletics track on the sports field and the only other sporting sections (apart from football) consist of cricket (Surrey Championship Division 2) and tennis. There is also, however, a vibrant social side within its fine clubhouse that also caters for competitive darts and pool with both of these events taking part in the local leagues.

The history of Worcester Park Football Club is rather vague.

It appears that the club was founded in 1900, but became more established in 1921 when WPAC inherited the ground at Green Lane known as Skinners Field. Whether WPFC played at Skinners Field before 1921 is not known as it is believed that the field was part of church land.

In 1949 the football club was admitted to the old Surrey Senior League where it stayed throughout the fifties and early sixties before demotion to intermediate grade football. WPFC then became a founder member of the Surrey County Premier League in 1982 before its name change to the Surrey County Senior League in 2000. In 2003 it joined the Combined Counties League as part of the new Division 1.

In the earlier years the club was known as the Skinners, but for a long time now ‘come on the Park’ has been the call from the touchline.

The second team play in the Reserves division of the Surrey Elite League following the suspensions of the Combined Counties Football League reserve division due to a lack of teams in 2013-14 and the third eleven (known as the ‘A’ team) play in the Surrey South Eastern Combination League Division 1. The club also provides for a number of junior teams and a vets side.

In 2010-11 Park won the Combined Counties League Division One title for the first time.
