Kirkstall AbbeyKirkstal Abbey was built over eight hundredyears ago by the Cistercian Monks ofFountains Abbey. The site is one of Europe’sfinest examples of an early Cistercian Abbeycomplex and is of great historical landscapeand architectural importance. The monksexisted at Kirkstall from 1152 until 1539when the dissolution of monasteries broughtabbey life to an abrupt end.

From the Abbey House Car Park cross the main
road using the crossing and go through the gate
into the Abbey grounds. Turn left here and
follow the path round the Abbey remains. This
path takes you in a loop around the Abbey and
back to your starting point by the gate. The path
is entirely tarmac and is suitable for both prams
and wheelchairs.
The towpath by the canal can be followedall the way into Leeds City Centre. Thiswould provide an alternative walk ofapproximately 6 miles.

Directions
From Bramley Fall Car Park head left down the
main track towards the canal. Cross over the
canal at Newlay Locks and then turn right
following the canal towpath down to the next
set of locks. Return back over the canal here
and then climb the steps straight in front of you.
Follow this path until just before you reach the
houses where you turn right. This path then
takes you back to the Car Park.

From the car park at Farnley Hall follow the
track down past the children’s play area. When
you reach a fork take the left path through the
woods. When you reach the gates turn immedi-
ately right and follow the path along the wall.
Continue along this path following the wall as it
bears right. As the path leaves the wall continue
until you reach a tarmac road. Turn right here
and then right again at the top to bring you
back to the main gates of Farnley Hall.

From Victoria Street head past the school and
turn right into Thornhill Street. At the end of
here turn right into Woodhall Road and follow
this for approximately half a mile until you
reach Ravenscliffe Farm.
Just after the farm turn right down a track,
continue along here until you reach a right turn
into Fagley Road where you immediately turn
right again to follow the Leeds Country Way
alongside Fagley Beck. After approx. one mile
you reach Ravenscliffe Road which you continue
up until you reach Carr Road, where you turn
right to return back to Victoria Park.
