FAILURE 'BIGGEST ASSET' FOR ME: SUBHASH GHAI PANAJI, (IANS) Filmmaker Subhash Ghai says failure is a blessing in disguise as they make one push boundaries and perform better. "In my journey of 45 years as a filmmaker, failure has been the biggest asset for me. You should treat failure as a blessing because it gives you a different energy all together," Ghai said here during his masterclass at the ongoing 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). "Failure is an attempt. There is no filmmaker in the world who has not made flop films," he added. Having started his directorial career with the 1976 film "Kalicharan", Ghai's repertoire is studded with cinematic gems like "Karz", "Ram Lakhan", "Khalnayak", "Pardes", "Taal", "Saudagar" and "Karma". Ghai says he will get back to the director's chair but with the right script. "A filmmaker always wants to make a film. The subject will have to something that I haven't done. I don't want to make a film just for the heck of it." MUMBAI, (IANS) The atmosphere of "in- tolerance" and "barbaric" statements on "beheading" of filmmakers and actors has upset Rohit Roy, who says he is frustrated about being an Indian living in India. "For the first time, I'm sad, frustrated, enraged that I'm an Indian living in India... Never thought I'd ever say that. Indeed, very sad. Jai Hind," Rohit tweeted. Rohit said: "To- day, people are offering rewards for the heads of actors/directors for a film that they haven't seen one single frame of! The government is doing nothing to stop this abetting even! Forget creative freedom, isn't this 'intolerance' scary for all Indians? Saddened," he tweeted. He said: "India is what it is because of its diversity, sense of democracy and importantly, it's secularism. Hin- duism, a way of life, is inclusive in nature." MUMBAI, (IANS) After getting several threats over her film "Padmavati", actress Deepika Padukone says she would like to feel "safer and protected" at this point of time. In an interview with "Talk- ing Movies: India Special" for BBC World News, the actress voiced her opinion on the whole stir. The show will go on air on Saturday, read a statement. Asked whether she would like to have better pro- tection from the state, she said: "In an ideal world, yes. I think it is too soon to tell... But yes it would be nicer to feel safer or protected at this point." Sanjay Leela Bhansali's attempt to bring alive the story of Rajput queen Rani Padmavati on the silver screen with his movie "Padmavati" hasn't gone down well with Hindu groups backed by the B J P. It features Deepika as Rani Padmavati, Shahid Kapoor as her hus- band and a warrior king and Ranveer Singh essays Alauddin Khilji. Bhansali faced many hiccups while shooting the film, but the protests esca- lated as the film neared its release date. There are conjec- tures that it "distorts history" re- garding the Rajput queen, and Bhansali has denied it repeatedly. KOLKATA, (IANS) Actress Rani Mukerji, who is coming back to the big screen with "Hichki" after a long hiatus, says she doesn't ask her husband and filmmaker Aditya Chopra to cast her in films. "I don't talk about work with Aditya. I don't tell him to cast me in films, I can only tell him when do we make our next baby. My conversation with Adi is all about love and Adira. I can't have a huge family as I think I have missed the bus. I should have started long time ago. But I can always try for a second child," Rani said at the India Today Conclave East 2017 on Friday. Rani, who has appeared in films like "Black", " Laaga Chunari Mein Daag", "Mardaani" and "No One Killed Jessica", says she "never wanted to be an actor" in the first place. "My mum wanted me to be an actor, I actually agreed to her wish. My father was very against my mum's wish. He was not very keen that I join films because he has been in the industry for so long. He thought that I wasn't too strong to go through the perils of cinema. I told my mum she should reconsider as I will make a fool of myself. But she wanted me to at least try. I did it and I realised that I wanted to do this. And then, there was no looking back," said Rani. NAGPUR, (IANS) India bowled out Sri Lanka for 166 runs in their second innings to register a victory by an innings and 239 runs in the second Test and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series here on Monday. Beginning the day 384 behind with nine wickets in hand and needing to bat about five sessions to save the Test, Sri Lanka failed to step up to the pressure and folded up inside the tea session on the four th day at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium. Captain Dinesh Chandimal (61) waged a lone battle as shared a 58-run stand for the eight wicket with Suranga Lakmal (31) to delay the inevitable. Indian bowlers hunted in packs, with all of them getting into wickets column. Off- spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (4/63), left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (2/28), pacers Umesh Yadav (2/30) and Ishant Sharma (2/43) were all over the Sri Lankan batsmen. Ashwin, following his four wickets, became the fastest bowler to take 300 wickets in Test history. The 31-year-old, who bagged eight wickets in the Test, achieved this feat in 54 matches, surpassing the record of Australia's Denis Lillee, who achieved the milestone in 56 Tests. Ashwin also became the fifth Indian to claim 300 wickets. After India declared their first innings on a mammoth 610/6 on Sunday, taking a 405-run lead, it was always going to be tough for the visitors, who have an inexperienced batting line-up in the five-day format. They had lost opening Sadeera Samarawickrama (0) before stumps on Sunday. On Monday, resuming the play at 21/1, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Two overnight batsmen Dimuth Karunaratne (18) and Lahiru Thirimanne (23) lacked patience in the morning. BRIEF SCORES: Sri Lanka: 205 all out and 166 all out (Dinesh Chandimal 61, Suranga Lakmal 31; Ravichandran Ashwin 4/63, Ravindra Jadeja 2/28, Umesh Yadav 2/30, Ishant Sharma 2/43) vs India: 610/6 declared. GONE THROUGH LOT OF STRUGGLE TO JOIN FILMS: SHRADDHAPANAJI, (PTI) She hails from a family full of popular actors and singers, but Shraddha Kapoor has said joining films was not a cake-walk for her. The 30-year -old star, who is the daughter of actor Shakti Kapoor and is also related to legendary singers Lata Mangeshkarand Asha Bhosle, said she struggled a lot to get her first big break in the industy, which of late has been plagued by the nepotismdebate. It was a loud voice inside me that said acting is the profession I want to join."A lot of people think if you are a son or daughter of an actor you don't need to audition, but that is not the case. I have gone through alot of struggle to join films. I can't even count how many auditions I have given or how many times I have been replaced. It is not easy.My first two films didn t get noticed and it was tough. But 'Aashiqui 2' changed things," Shraddha said on the sidelines of InternationalFilm Festival of India (IFFI) here. "My aim is to try something different every time and failures will happen. But its ok. Films may not work always, but I am happy thatpeople still love me. The affection I get from my fans is amazing and it keeps me going."

THREATS TO BHANSALI, DEEPIKA WRONG: ADITYANATHGORAKHPUR, (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said those who have threatened "Padmavati" directorSanjay Leela Bhansali and actress Deepika Padukone are wrong. Adityanath said the Uttar Pradesh government had already pre-sented its views to the censor board and central government."Those who have threatened to behead Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are wrong," Adityanath said here. A BJP leaderhad announced a reward of Rs 10 crore for anyone who beheads Bhansali and Padukone. He was booked on Tuesday. Adityanath alsosaid that Bhansali should respect the sentiments of people protesting against the film."Bhansali has no right to play with the emotions of people. If people are protesting, he should respect their sentiments," he said."Padmavati" was scheduled to hit the theatres on December 1 but it has been mired in controversy over conjectures that it distor tshistory about Rajput queen Padmavati. Its release has been deferred and a new date is to yet to be announced.

Films about the movie industry tend to demonstrate the sleazy side ofshowbiz - but with a gentle touch. "Julie 2" goes about it with hammersand tongs. The story of the rise and fall of an ambitious actress has afamiliar ring to it. A lot of the experiences that Julie (Rai Laxmi) goesthrough seem inspired from the events that transpired in the life of ac-tress Nagma. The whole episode where Julie has a roaring affair withSouth Indian superstar Ravi Kumar (Ravi Kissan, delightfully Telugu inhis speech and manner) is borrowed from Nagma's link-up with SarathKumar, as is Julie's subsequent link-up with a cricketer which endsrather crudely with the cricketer declaring to the shocked actress that hecan't marry her as she has been with too many men before him. "Not thatI expect you to be a virgin. But there has to be a limit," he drawls. This iswhere the audience either hopes for the character to be killed or commitscollective suicide. Then there is veteran actor Anant Jog who smacks hislips as though he has just found a juicy chicken leg when he meets theheroine.Subtlety is not a quality that the characters of this film value.Writer-director Deepak Shivdasani strings together the betrayals of themen in Julie's life with a sledgehammer impact. There is no ambivalencein the way Julie's men are presented in the plot. Apart from her faithfulman-Friday endearingly named Ambani, all the men in Julie's life arejerks, lechers and potential rapists. By the time she sobs: "No one wantsto love me, they all want only my body", Julie's slump into self-destruc-

tion is nearly complete. The only man who seems to genuinely care forher is her first film director played with an affectionate swagger byNishikant Kamat. One of the film's most compelling episodes has Kamatticking off a sleazy film financier who openly propositions the shockedand tearful Julie, by hinting at a sexual liaison with the financier's 18-yearold sister. At times like this, the narrative gathers its wits to deliver atelling blow on the grime behind the glitz of show world. At a time whenthe predatory culture of Harvey Weinstein has come out in the open,"Julie 2", in its subverted way, tells us why the sexual predators ofBollywood cannot be exposed. The film deploys an unusual level of melo-drama to create an aura of progressive ruination around its protagonist. Itfinally slumps to a groaning halt. But not before executing an end-gamethat attempts to take the saga of the casting couch to a suspenseful level.Debutante Rai Laxmi stands impressively tall even as her charactercrumbles to the ground. She has a fairly firm grip over her character'smessy life and proves herself quite a "chick' off the old oomphy block".It is a little startling to see seasoned actors like Pankaj Tripathy, RatiAgnihotri and Ravi Kissan pitching in with bombastic per formances. Butthen, bombast is the need of the hour. "Julie 2" is an old-fashioned high-pitched melodramatic take on an actress' journey from zero to wow. Ithas plenty of unexpected twists and turns in the plot, not all of themconvincing. The narrative neatly balances the engaging and the corny.

NAGPUR, (IANS) India skipper Virat Kohli on Thursday said a crampedschedule ahead of impor tant challenges such as the South Africacricket tour sometimes comes in the way of preparations. India willfinish their limited overs matches against Sri Lanka on December 24(final T20I) before they fly off to South Africa on December 28, with thefirst Test star ting on January 5. "And everyone star tsjudging players when results come after Test matches. But it shouldbe a fair game, where we get to prepare the way we want to and thenwe are entitled to be criticised. So we thought this (getting seam-friendly wickets at the ongoing series) is an ample oppor tunity for us

to challenge ourselves, put us in a situation (which they expect toencounter in South Africa)," he added. Kohli admitted that he hadasked for bouncy wickets for the home series against Sri Lanka keep-ing in mind the more tougher tour to South Africa in January. "Yes (Ihad), because unfor tunately we get only two days before we fly toSouth Africa af ter this series gets over. So we have no choice but tryto be in a game situation and think of what's coming ahead of us. "Hadwe got a month off ideally, we would have done a proper preparationin a camp sor t of scenario but we have to sort of make do with what we have,"Kohli said. India drew with the tourists in the first rubber at the Eden Gardens inKolkata. Indian cricketers have been playing non-stop cricket since the start ofthe IPL which was followed by the ICC Champions Trophy, away toursof West Indies and Sri Lanka and three successive home series againstAustralia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka comprising 23 matches (3 Tests,11 ODIs and 9 T20Is).
