Honesty Integrity Respect Fairness Equity Teamwork 1 From the Principal’s Desk It seems winter is well and truly with us. The weather has certainly changed and although the rain has been welcomed, it has been quite chilly. This invariably means children wear jackets and more jumpers etc. Sadly, this also means our lost property mound becomes a mountain! So many jackets and jumpers are not named so it is impossible to return them to their owner. I encourage all families, to firstly name all items that can be removed and secondly, come in and have a look through the lost property for that missing item. While I am on the topic of lost property, we have a second hand uniform sale this Friday from 9am. This is always very well attended. There will be a vast range of uniforms available, they are much cheaper than new ones, so come along, and I would suggest you be here right on 9am (no sales before 9am). As mentioned, we have a second hand uniform sale this Friday. This will, as per usual, be organised and run by our wonderful Parents and Friends Group who do so much to support DPS and they raise valuable funds in different ways. They also do the Mother’s and Father’s Day stalls which kids absolutely love. Throughout the year we are look for assistance with a number of PFG events, so please consider being involved in your school. I know the PFG are currently looking for a few more helpers on Tuesday morning for about 30 minutes each week to help with the student banking. This is actually a nice group of parents who collect and count money for the bank and it’s a nice social thing to do as well as helping the school. So let us know if you are interested and willing to assist in this, or any other PFG activity. You will be made very welcome. As always there is lots happening at DPS. I must say our students are producing some outstanding work in all areas of the curriculum! I have seen some amazing work, we have so many very bright students here. Our teachers spend so much time developing the curriculum to ensure all students are catered for at their level, and it is working. We actually meet three times per week as an entire staff to look at our data, discuss challenges and strengths as we strive to continually improve what we do. This is particularly important at this time as 2019 is a review year for DPS. That means we are reflecting on the previous four years. We are looking closely at our student achievement data, opinion survey data in an effort to understand what enables us to achieve our goals and also to consider what barriers may hinder progress. At the end of 2019 we will work on a new Strategic Plan which will guide us over the next four years. We will set new goals and targets based on what we believe our priorities and areas of focus should be. It seems winter is well and truly with us. The weather has certainly changed and although the rain has been welcomed,

it has been quite chilly. This invariably means children wear jackets and more jumpers etc. Sadly, this also means our

process, which all Victorian schools must complete, has been quite affirming and we are realising there is so much

more to be proud of at DPS than first thought.

This week is very exciting, particularly for our Grade 3 who are doing their STOMP productions, “Out of This World”

and Grade 5 doing “Battle of The Bands”. These students are performing at Doncaster Secondary School’s Performing

Arts Centre. Performances are as follows; Grade 3 at midday followed immediately by Grade 5 at 2pm, then the

evening performances are Grade 3 at 6pm and Grade 5 at 7.30pm. We also have another performance next week at

11.30am on Friday. This will be our Grade 4’s doing a Circus Show in the gym here at school. All students from

Grade 3, 4 and 5 have been working on their performances all term so we are all excited and looking forward to seeing

what they can do, I am sure they will be fabulous!

We only have one week to go this term, but in the last days we have our performances as I have mentioned, the second

hand uniform, Ready Steady School (Friday this week), Athletics Day for Grades 3,4,5 and 6 next Monday, Book

Fair, Student Led Conferences next Wednesday and our Circus assembly next Friday at 11.30am. Please mark your

diary so you don’t miss out as we love to see parents and friends of DPS enjoying all we do here at school and our

students, your children, always get a thrill and try extra hard when they know a parent, or someone special is there to

see them.

Finally, as the term is almost over, and semester one is done I would like to acknowledge the wonderful staff we have

at DPS. I really wish our community knew just how much work our teachers put into everyday at DPS. The planning

and documentation they do in preparation for delivering the curriculum is outstanding. They really do an amazing job

and are so committed, it is a privilege to work with such dedicated people, it really is. Therefore, I thank each and

every member of our staff. I would also like to thank our Parents and Friends Group who do so much to support the

school at a variety of ways. I also encourage you to participate with this group if and when you can as they are very

social, and you would be made welcome.

Thankyou to parents who assist in classrooms, your input is extremely important and we enjoy you being here to work

with us for our students. Thankyou to our Kids Hope Mentors who come to us through a program that started in the

Doncaster Church. These people are highly trained and work with some of our students weekly as a support to their

learning.

Thank you also to our School Councillors. This is a particularly warm recognition at this time of year as they give

their time late at night throughout the winter months when they could be home with their families. I thank them for

their support, guidance, and input into what can at times be contentious issues. They provide a strong parent voice

when we discuss issues or seek approval for activities and events such as excursions, incursion and camps. Particular

thanks to Carl Michael our President who supports information sessions, performances as well as council meetings.

In addition, of course I must not forget our students. We are fortunate to work with kids who are ready willing and

able to have a go at almost anything. We do have our share of students who do not particularly like or enjoy PE, Sport

or Art but they have a go and get involved and that’s all we can ask. DPS is full of great kids who do very well, and

this is thanks to our supportive parents, dedicated staff and our wonderful resources. DPS is your school, please come

in and get as involved as you wish. Alternatively, just come and visit us, when you are here for the student led

conferences next week please take time to have a look around at our excellent facilities and beautiful gardens. We

have been working hard to improve our grounds and we are well on the way to creating one of the best school grounds

in the area. This includes our veggie garden and chooks shed which students thoroughly enjoy and I’m pleased to say

our chooks are now laying eggs!!

Student led conferences @ DPS, are fast approaching and we hope that you have booked in a time to engage in this valuable process.

Student led conferences are a vehicle to build students’ self-representation, reflection, and communication skills. As an ally and table partner in these conferences, parents play an important role in helping students be successful. A student-led conference is a conference with parents, led by the student. The role of the classroom teacher is a facilitator in the conference process. Students lead parents through a discussion of their work and established academic and social goals.

The benefits of Student Led Conferences: to help students demonstrate evidence of learning to teach students the process of reflection and self-evaluation to facilitate the development of students' organisational and oral communication skills

and to increase their self-confidence to encourage students, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue to encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their learning to increase parent understanding of their child’s learning creating a strong connection

Some tips for parents Ensure that you are enthusiastic and actively engaged and attentive during the process. Your

children have spent time and effort in preparing for the conference Allow your child to run through the conference without interruption and ask questions or provide

feedback at the end Give specific praise about the quality of work, effort and knowledge being represented Allow your child to take full responsibility for their work and talk to them honestly about ‘next

steps’ in their learning journey If you have any questions or concerns that are not connected to the conference, please arrange

another time with the classroom teacher to discuss specific issues Most importantly, celebrate your child’s achievements and enjoy the process

Our first session of ‘READY, STEADY, SCHOOL’ was an exciting time for all the children,

who got to experience firsthand what being a school kid is really all about.

We would like to welcome all kinder aged children to attend our next sessions of the

‘READY, STEADY, SCHOOL’ program. Even if you can only join us for one or two sessions

to give your child a chance to see what it is like being a school kid at Doncaster Primary

School.

Doncaster Primary School offers an extensive ‘SCHOOL STARTERS’ program for all children

enrolled to start school in 2020.

During these sessions the ‘SCHOOL STARTERS’ will engage in a variety of activities with our

Prep teachers. This allows them to become familiar with Doncaster Primary and to feel at ease

and connected to their school environment.

The ‘SCHOOL STARTERS’ program is an essential step in ensuring a smooth transition to

primary school.

The times for all sessions is 9.15am – 10.45am. At the final session you will only be required to

attend a 5–10 minute interview with your child’s prep teacher for 2020.

Our ‘Starting School at Doncaster Primary School’ Information Evening will be held at

What’s Been Happening?

Using our brilliant imaginations and cooking skills, we’ve been baking bumblebees and cat in the hat treats. Yum!

The team was busy last week in preparation for Marvel week! We were busy preparing artworks for our amazing

display. As Marvel week is now upon us we will be following in our super heroes’ footsteps by creating Captain

America cookies, designing and moulding our own superheroes and completing super hero challenges!

With the school holidays just around the corner, don’t forget to secure your bookings for the Extend Squad holiday
