ay 5 - 13 is National Travel and Tourism Week. In Las Vegas, travel and
tourism isn’t just another industry. We wrote the book, we are the global icon for it - we own it.
We all know and appreciate the positive impacts of the tourism, gaming and entertainment industry in Las Vegas. It is a pleasure (and a relief) to see the steady and consistent growth in visitor volume, convention attendance and daily room rates over the past two years.
Travel and tourism also remains one of our biggest opportunities for economic expansion. As the LVCVA continues to attract top-tier business clients to Las Vegas for conventions, meetings and other events, we have a natural, captive audience for attracting new business opportunities. In fact, Southern Nevada is the number one convention destination in North America and last year hosted nearly 5 million convention and trade show delegates. Future business and trade opportunities are enormous.
Expansion will also focus on new and diverse markets, while continuing to leverage existing strengths in innovative and extraordinary ways. Culinary tourism, medical tourism, eco-tourism and whatever comes next – each one a specialty market with immense potential to increase visitation and create jobs.
International travel and tourism presents especially fertile ground for driving business expansion and producing jobs. International travel ranks as one of the leading exports in the United States and 1 out of every 9 jobs in the nation depends on travel and tourism. The U.S. Travel Association surmises that, by reclaiming America’s 17 percent share of global travel, the United States could attract 98 million more visitors, create an additional 1.3 million U.S. jobs by 2020 (compared with 2010) and inject $859 billion into the U.S. economy. With our exceptional airport, entertainment and convention assets, Las Vegas is uniquely poised to tap into this potential as the paradigm for international visitation in the United States.
So what can the community do now to help secure these opportunities for the future? We can, first of all, collectively and actively support measures to streamline visa processes and eliminate barriers to increasing international tourism. Members of Nevada’s Congressional delegation have stepped up leadership efforts and we must encourage them to persevere. For example:
Congressman Joe Heck introduced a bill (Welcoming Business Travelers and Tourists to America Act of 2011) to help attract more visitors from the fastest-growing and highest-spending markets of Brazil, China and India.
Congresswoman Shelley Berkley co-sponsored legislation (Visa Waiver Program Enhanced Security and Reform Act) aimed to increase the number of international visitors to the United States and bolster Nevada’s tourism industry.
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has kept international tourism at the forefront of economic policy discussions in an effort to create new business opportunities and generate much-needed jobs.
U.S. Senator Dean Heller is co-sponsoring a bill (Jobs Originated through Launching Travel Act) to improve visa processing and expand international travel through a visa processing standard and expanded waiver program.
Both the Chamber and the LVCVA are vocal advocates for these important pieces of legislation. We also engaged on these issues with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar in a recent town hall in Las Vegas. Chamber Chairman-elect Jay Barrett followed up in writing to ask Secretary Salazar to work with President Obama to keep issues of international tourism front and center and increase coordination among the federal Departments of State, Interior, Commerce, Transportation and Homeland Security in order to eliminate unnecessary regulation, streamline visa processes and otherwise facilitate international tourism to and within the U.S.
In addition to advocacy, we need to work as a united business community with the LVCVA and others to develop a strategic effort to form productive business connections with those who visit for conventions and meetings: to increase investment in import/export opportunities, diversify the economy and enhance employment.
On May 9th, we partner with the LVCVA to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Las Vegas News Bureau, an organization that historically was formed to attract visitors by publicizing classic, iconic and newsworthy activities about Las Vegas. Please join us at the convention authority complex for a luncheon that will celebrate the history of tourism through the eyes of the Las Vegas News Bureau and will add our own unique, surprise element. Equally important, it’s a great opportunity to join in the dialogue about our city’s next possibilities in travel and tourism so that, in 2025, we can still say, “We own it!”

hen Las Vegas locals flip through a magazine and see photos of celebrities at an event in Las Vegas, or
notice a billboard on the I-15 for an upcoming performance from a headliner, or catch a “What happens in
Vegas…” commercial on television, we sometimes overlook that very few cities in the world get the type of
exposure that Vegas does. It is its own brand of tourism, its own experience, and unlike any other destination city in the world.
It has been a paradigm of the travel and leisure industry since it was first marketed to the rest of the country. Communicating
those experiences is the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) and the Las Vegas News Bureau, which has
been on scene to capture the bright lights of Las Vegas and its myriad celebrity appearances, attractions, implosions, concerts
and millions of Las Vegas tourists, then convey those eye-catching images to media outlets all over the world.
The origins of the Las Vegas News Bureau rewind to
the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Live Wire Fund,
initiated by Chamber President Maxwell Kelch in 1945.
Kelch, predicting the end of World War II would bring
about a tourism boom that Las Vegas would be ideal
to accommodate, envisioned Las Vegas as a product,
with the best way to sell it being to advertise it on a
large scale. In February 1945, Kelch and the Chamber,
with the assistance of the business community,
embarked on an ambitious fundraising initiative, the
Live Wire Fund, to build the Las Vegas brand. With
the funds, major advertising campaigns (including the
creation of Vegas Vic and his “Howdy, podner” tagline)
and the formation of the News Bureau, among others,
catapulted Las Vegas into thousands of national,
regional and local markets.
By shooting hundreds of thousands of photos since
its inception, the Las Vegas News Bureau created a
composite of Las Vegas: warm weather, whimsical and
fun days, and some of the best dining, entertainment
and nightlife to experience in the evening. This was
imperative in establishing Las Vegas as the premier
destination city in the United States and its place in
the internaitional travel and tourism industry today.
The News Bureau became part of the LVCVA in 1992,
and continues to stream photos and videos through a
variety of media, pushing Las Vegas’ message to the
international community. Just as Kelch had originally
imagined, the News Bureau had helped make Las
Vegas a household name.
With such a vibrant history behind us and economic
recovery firming up, there are new opportunities to
seize that will ensure the stability and continued
growth of the industry, as well as our place at the
forefront of it. “We are projecting to host more than 40
million visitors in 2012, our highest total ever, which
will generate $40 billion for our community,” says
Rossi Ralenkotter, president and CEO of the LVCVA.
“We are focusing on three key areas to continue that
growth: international visitation; business travelers and
special events.”
The first of these areas, increasing international
tourism, has been assisted by recent measures for
visa reform by the federal government. Referring to
a recent town hall with Secretary of the Interior Ken
Salazar, Ralenkotter says, “We were able to reiterate
the importance of continuing to streamline the visa
approval process and add more nations to the Visa
Waiver Program. We also discussed the importance
of developing a national transportation plan and
approving long-term funding for the FAA and the
National Highway Fund.”

support the tourism industry, as it impacts the
lives of everyone who lives and works here.

as well.” For more information on the LVCVA

com or call 702.892.7691.
An easy way for the community to engage
and support tourism is by celebrating National
Travel and Tourism Week from May 5 - 13. On
May 8, the LVCVA is encouraging all of Las
Vegas to wear blue in support of the travel and
tourism industry.
The travel and tourism industry in Las Vegas
is continuing to grow, strengthen and diversify,
ensuring that Las Vegas retains its standing as
one of the leading destinations in the United
States and the world. With new projects on
the horizon and clearly-defined areas of focus
for development and growth, the LVCVA will
have plenty to promote and the News Bureau
will have plenty to capture. It’s a city that is
camera-ready.

Bureau. Tourism numbers provided by Las
Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
The LVCVA is working alongside federal
policymakers to give tourism a strong voice
in Washington. “Congressman Heck has
introduced legislation to improve the visa
approval process, which seeks to expand the
number of processing centers and the hours
of operation for emerging markets such as
Brazil, China and India. Congresswoman
Berkley has introduced legislation to expand
the Visa Waiver Program to include more
countries with emerging economies whose
business people are eager to more easily
attend conventions in the United States and
Las Vegas. President Obama recently issued
an Executive Order that focuses government
efforts on improving travel and tourism to and
within the United States,” explains Ralenkotter.
To keep the momentum going, Ralenkotter
says the LVCVA will continue to
work with McCarran
International
Airport and international airlines to keep the
traveling process as streamlined as possible
for passengers. “We contract with 12 offices
around the world that market our destination
in 75 different countries. One of the ways
we can ensure growth in a particular market
is to entice non-stop airline service to and
from that country. The LVCVA is one of the
few destination marketing organizations that
work directly with its airport to promote new
air service to its destination. Our partnership
with McCarran…gives Las Vegas a great
advantage over other destinations.”
Legislative measures in visa reform will
also help with the advancement of business
travel in the Las Vegas area. “We need to
ensure that those who
want to travel here
are able to do so
conveniently. Once
they do travel here,
we need to make
sure that they have
a welcoming and
convenient experience
entering the country.”
Ralenkotter stresses the importance of
making both domestic and international
business travel as efficient as possible. “The
success of the meetings and convention
industry is not only important to Southern
Nevada, where it supports 58,000 jobs
and generates more than $6 billion for
our economy, but it’s a critical part of the
economic growth of our country. Nationally,
the industry supports more than six
million jobs and generates $450 billion. It
is important that we continue to promote
the value of face-to-face meetings to
conducting business. Research shows
that every dollar spent on business travel
generates $12 in revenue for a company.”
The LVCVA campaign, Vegas Means
Business, exclusively targets corporate
executive offices to show specific executives
the offerings of Las Vegas for their meetings.
With the addition of the Mob Museum, The
Smith Center for the Performing Arts, and
the upcoming grand opening of Terminal 3
at McCarran International Airport, special
events are an area of opportunity that have
much to offer for 2012 and in the coming
years. As examples of this year’s impressive
array of events and projects, Ralenkotter lists
the $550 million Project Linq from Caesars
Entertainment, the National Hockey League’s
year-end awards event at the Wynn Las
Vegas, Shania Twain at Caesars Palace, and
the Tropicana, MGM Grand, Golden Nugget
and El Cortez making significant renovations.
With such initiatives in progress and
on the horizon, Ralenkotter urges the
business community to stay apprised of the
developments and what conventions and
meetings are coming into town. “We always
encourage the community to understand and
The establishment of the Nevada Test Site created an entire cultural movement
around the Atomic Era. Las Vegas jumped at the opportunity to market the city as
the only peacetime above ground nuclear testing site in the continental United States.
The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce published schedules of the atomic blasts
and the best vantage points to watch them. Press releases extolled the attraction of
the blasts, and a special “News Nob” was set up only ten miles away from ground
zero of the explosions to give Americans all over the country a front seat to the
detonations. National marketing efforts led to hotels and resorts concocting “atomic
cocktails,” holding Miss Atomic Blast pageants and offering a variety of atomic-
themed souvenirs and services.
On May 24, 1957, towards the end of the Atomic Era, Las Vegas News Bureau
photographer Don English snapped a shot of a giddy blonde bombshell clad in a
bathing suit dotted with cotton “mushroom clouds” and red lipstick. This young
lady, a dancer from the Copa Room at the Sands Hotel, was dubbed “Miss Atomic
Bomb” and remains one of the city’s most iconic images. Representing an era
of glitz and glamour, Miss Atomic Bomb is a classic portrait of Las Vegas and a
symbol of pop culture.
Join the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors
Authority as they celebrate the images that built the Las Vegas brand and captured its
rich and dynamic history. The Business Power Luncheon on May 9 will commemorate
65 years of the Las Vegas News Bureau and unveil a new Miss Atomic Bomb. Who

Celebrate Small Business Week by nominating your business or
a peer business for a Small Business Excellence Award. These
awards, sponsored exclusively by Nevada State Bank, are the
Chamber’s annual tribute to the companies that go above and
beyond in the Southern Nevada business community. They are
a effective way to promote your business, get free publicity
and gain recognition for your company’s values, practices
and culture. “It’s a showcase for success,” says Debra Solt,
chairman of the Small Business Excellence Awards Committee.
awards are giVen out in four categories:
• Small Business of the Year (5 or fewer employees)
• Small Business of the Year (25 or fewer employees)
• Non-Profit Business of the Year
• Woman/Minority-Owned Business of the Year
Businesses that submit a qualified nomination for a
small Business Excellence award will also receive
two complimentary tickets to Business Expo!
Nomination forms for each of the categories are available at
lVchamber.com/sbea, and are due by July 6. You are not
required to provide your company’s financial statements to
be eligible for an award. Nominees are publicized throughout
the nomination process and published on LVChamber.com.
Selection committee members participate in a blind scoring
of each nomination form. “It’s all about how well you tell your
story,” explains Solt. Judges score independently, and are not
informed of the winners in advance. Solt encourages those
who nominate to give a glimpse of the company’s culture, and
what distinguishes them from others in the industry, as well as
the entire business community. Tips for writing a memorable
nomination form are available for download at LVChamber.com.
The celebration culminates with the Small Business Excellence
Awards Luncheon on Thursday, September 20, at the Paris
Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, where finalists and winners are
announced in each of the categories. “We are celebrating
the best of the best,” says Solt. “It’s an opportunity to
talk about the impact of small business on our economy
and how small business stimulates future growth.”
To encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship, Solt recommends
that members show their support for nominees and the
small business community by attending the luncheon. “It’s a
must-attend,” she remarks. “The atmosphere is celebratory,
and you get to share your story with other members.”

Describe yourself in three words. Passionate, Competitive, Family
Who are your role models in business? My mom and Donald Trump.
What’s the best way to resolve a customer issue? The best approach is to have a conversation either by phone or in person. This will show your customer that you want to listen and understand what the issue is.
What is your definition of success? Being able to contribute and make a positive difference for my company, community and most importantly, my family!
Describe your company in 10 words or less. Leader, nuclear weapons stockpile stewardship, and arms control verification testing.

They were able to deal with the SBA using information they already had from us, and we got approval quickly. City National made the process absolutely simple.

City National Business Banking Member FDIC
Chamber Insurance & Benefits, LLC (CIB) announced a new
renewal rate structure for some of its individual employer
groups, effective July 2012. This rate restructuring coincides
with the roll-out of new plans and coverage features
available to renewing members, as well as members not
currently enrolled in the Chamber Health Plan who may
be exploring their options for affordable health care.
The rate changes taking place are designed to ensure
the Chamber can continue to offer employers a variety
of affordable, comprehensive insurance products. While
in some cases renewal rates may increase, there
are also instances where rates will decrease.
These rate adjustments are in conjunction with the
launch of several new products designed to help
employer groups decrease their overall insurance
costs while expanding coverage choices. This includes
the introduction of two new prescription coverage
options, as well as single parent and child rates.
The program will offer an 18-month guarantee and will
continue to have tiered rating, rather than an age-rated system,
for groups with 2-50 full-time employees. “This is a good time
to talk to your broker about the best way to maximize your
insurance plan so it meets your needs in a comprehensive,
affordable way,” says CIB president Bill Wright. “Our goal is that
of our members – to provide the most affordable and reliable
insurance coverage possible. I’m confident that when members
review their policies and discuss renewal options with their
brokers, they’ll see that the Chamber Health Plan continues to
be one of the most competitive coverage options in the market.”
Wright points out that even when the rate changes go
into effect, the Chamber’s group insurance will remain
one of the most competitive plans on the market, offering
significant coverage options at lower costs than many
other carriers. The Chamber Health Plan offers the buying
power of larger companies to the small business employer
and offers and premium discount. Recent market review
indicates that the Chamber Health Plan will continue to be
aggressively priced within the Southern Nevada market.
To learn more about the variety of insurance coverage
products available through Chamber Insurance &
Benefits, visit ChamberIB.com or call 702.586.3889.

HELLOmy name is
Q: When will rate renewal changes go into effect?
A: July 1, 2012
Q: When is open enrollment?
A: Open enrollment begins June 1 and ends June 30.
Q: How will my new rate be assessed?
A: There are several factors taken into account when calculating
a group’s premium, including the group’s size, industry type
and medical claims history of all employees, as well as a
blended factor representing the ages/sexes within the group.
Q: How can i reduce my health plan premiums
and ensure i’m getting the most competitive
coverage in the southern nevada market?
A: Review your existing plan and your rate renewal structure
with your broker. Reducing your premiums may include
changing your existing plan, adding a Medicare Advantage
plan to cover employees over the age of 65 or extending
coverage to a wider range of employees to help balance
your company’s rating factors. Be a good consumer and ask
questions when you shop for your company’s coverage. Don’t
be afraid to ask about “out of pocket” costs, co-pays, physician
and hospital availability and pharmacy requirements.
Q: What else should i be aware
of during this change?
A: Your group number will be changing. Your online billing
information must be updated no later than May 31, to
ensure there is no delay in the payment of your premium.
Q: Where can i go for more
information about my options?
A: Contact your broker or call Chamber Insurance &

unclaimed property law is your business in compliance? The Office of the Nevada Treasurer Unclaimed Property
Division’s role is to not only assist the rightful owners of the
unclaimed property, but to ensure compliance with businesses
operating in Nevada to report unclaimed property. Nevada
Unclaimed Property law (NRS 120A) requires any entity or
person in possession of property belonging to another person
or business to report that property to the State of Nevada.
Many businesses are unaware of this mandate and have
unclaimed property on the books which must be reported.
unclaimed ProPerty can include:
• Money or a financial asset owed to another business or individual
• A long-forgotten safe deposit box
• A final paycheck from a past employer
• A vendor check which was never cashed
• A gift card which has expired
• A dividend payment which was lost in the mail.
Unclaimed property does not include abounded cars, property
seized by law enforcement or contents of an abounded or
seized storage unit. The rightful owners will never know it
exists if Nevada businesses do not report unclaimed property.
Property is considered abandoned when there has been no
activity or contact with the owner for a specific period of time.
Most businesses are required to report annually by November 1;
insurance companies report by May 1. Between business owners’
support and adherence to Nevada’s unclaimed property laws, they
play a critical role in the process.
The state of Nevada has an active compliance amnesty program
for those who were unaware of the statues regarding unclaimed
property. Visit https://nevadatreasurer.gov/UnclaimedProperty.
