In that period the standing timber of the country has not only decreased from about three thousand billion feet to a little more than two thousand billion, but what remains is now much farther away from the center a of gravity of consumption. These lumber facts are going to be pretty well understood by the people,, and the man who wants to build a fram e house or a house of some other construction into which wood largely enters, w ill feel that considering that his house wHl last a generation or longer, he can hardly make a mistake by buying lumber now. We are /lot saying that the organized throughout the county, that I driver is _ always^ to blame for the will be known as Safety Drivers’' *"a Clubs. This club is being organized in Plymouth under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce. All drivers of cars and holders of driver’s license will be eligible to join this club. The membership fee is $1.00, The official name of the club will be The Plymouth Safety Drivers’ Club. To show the needs of a Safety Drivers Club and the work that a club of this kind will carry on: Wayne County has had its proportionate share of the 13,000 killings in Amer- ica caused by the use of automobiles. Of that number about 5,000 were little children. Safety educational work will save many lives right here in this community. The prevention of street accidents is a m atter of personal protection for every individ- ual in Wayne County. Educational programs and enter- tainments will be held at different dates throughout the season with the object in view of bringing about more Safe and Sane Driving and to pre- vent accidents and' save human life. Many accidents have been prevented by an educational campaign of this sort. All the services for the enter- tainments and band concerts that will be given throughout the season have been donated. Leon Van Schoich, Supervisor of Safety in Wayne Xounty, and Mr. Walsh are the official organizers the Safety Drivers Club. The committee appointed by Chamber of Commerce is as follows: Harry S. Lee, C. G. Shear, E. C. Hough, Harry Lush, Dr. R. E. Cooper and S. D. Strong. The entertainment to be given on May 23rd, at the Penniman Allen Theatre by the Plymouth Safety Drivers Club, promises to be one of the most interesting that it has been Plymouth's pleasure and privilege to witness. Two of Detroit’s prominent judges as well as Detroit attorneys will be prominent characters in this performance. Heretofore the Penni- man Allen theatre has not been available for entertainments of any kind, but in this movement for the preservation of human life. Manager H. R. Lash has made an exception of the hard and fast rule in allowing the theatre to be used by the Plymouth Safety Drivers’ Club. A t the public meeting called by the Chamber of Commerce at the village h a ll, Tuesday evening, there was a fa irly good attendance. H . S. Lee, chairm an of the special committee appointed by the C . of C ., presided over the meeting, and introduced Leon Van Schoick, supervisor of safety in Wayne county, who out- lined the safety campaign which is being launched in the county. The chairman next introduced J. H. G o ld ie , executive secretary of Detroit tSafety Counsel and member of the Detroit Board of Commerce. M r. Goldie is a most able speaker, and gave 'a very interesting talk. He m id : *T feel at home when I come to Plymouth, because this is where I liv e d at one tim e , and I have a brother who lives here. “The safety work has grown to be a big movement. It is tip to every individual to nuke this movement a T h is move began twenty ctnries, then movement spread to the raQ- and now the railroads are a fine, piece of safety work, le of the larger. riul- in the Uhited fa ta lity i long as . sin g le fa He traffic manager of Central told me that the of crossing accidents was : the railroad companies much traffic accidents. We found that 76 per cent of the people killed in De- troit were pedestrians, and it was only possible to fix the blame upon the driver in two cases. Only five per cent of the;, people now driving cars are careless. The- majority simply do not think while they are driving. It is not the fault of the police department that these ac- cidents happen, for no m atter how many officers you have on the job there will still be some accidents. The police de.patf.ment and the sher- iff’s office are doing a fine job in keeping down the accidents. We cannot keep down the accidents by just law enforcement, but we must educate the driver and likewise the pedestrian. “It may be thought that there are not enough accidents in Wayne County to warrant the organizing of Safe Drivers’ Clubs, but the records show that there were 675 killed in Wayne County last year. Of this, 166 were killed in Detroit besides 6,000 injured. The safety movement will never be a success unless every- one is behind it. Why? Because the. amount of automobile traffic has increased 30 per cent since 1922. Two years of such increase will double the present automobile popu- lation. We are building new high- ways, widening our old ones, and facilitating much more traffic on our roads. We are attracting to our roads, tourists who would otherwise go on other roads throughout the state. So you have to take care of not only the traffic from the city on the county highways, but you must o protect yourself from the tour- ist who passes through your town. “ M r. VanSchoick, who is super- visor of Safety in Wayne County, has taken on the work of organizing these Safe D rivers’ Clubs. The meknbers of these Safe D rivers’ Clubs pledge themselves to drive safely, and also help others to drive safely. TJie one dollar dues means nothing, b tit if we can get everyone to co- operate and work for the purpose of reducing traffic accidents, we surely can make a showing. S omj> people say that accidents only happen in crowded places -where the traffic is heavy. There is a map in the office of the Investigation Bureau of the D e tro it -Police Departm ent, and on this map is a red tack wherever a person has been killed. The tacks are not numerous at one point, but are scattered a ll over the d ty, showing that there are just as many accidents in the well-to-do residential sectionaj of the city as there are in the crowd- ed sections. It is the same way in Wayne county, accidents happen in a ll the different parts of the county. There is not and there never could be enough law enforcement to to tally stop a ll accidents, but we can do a great deal by educating. “In Detroit, we have a card system that worked fa irly go88 in D etroit When a party saw some driver vio- lating a traffic law . he would make a note of the number of .the license, the kind of car it was if possible, model, etc., and sent this card to the of Safety in Detroit The was called before the and given .a good safety, likew ise the record, and if it that this driver w _________ w the court on a charge of driving and said that he had been in any trouble of this before, as a m ajority of such o, the judge w ffl .b e handed this card *nd he knows Hie nature of the case. We think that we can on tills card system a The system was not so it was only that some fellow was particularly peeved, and would take the pains to take down the number of the car. Some- times people would report each other just for spite when there was no need of it. The way we propose to make this system perfect is to have some persons who can be trusted to take down these numbers and report violations of the law. That is what we intend to have the members of these Safe Drivers’ Clubs do. Not only-^pledge themselves to drive safely, but; to report violations of the law by ^others. We simply must not permit careless driving. You can never tell when one of these traffic accidents will strike in your own home. In one instance a man couldn’t see where he could help along the safety work, but after he was in an accident and got well from a fractured skull, he was an enthusi- astic booster for this w<jrk. “Even in your own town, the number of cars is quite heavy, and in two years there will be twice as many. You will have to do some- thing in order to make your streets safe. You can do this by organizing the club. The new homicide law gives ( power to .prosecute anyone killing negligently. When men come in and report themselves after they have taken the victim to the hospital, or when the time comes to notify the family that a person has been killed or injured, it makes it plain that some measure must be taken to prevent 'this killing of people, and mostly children. In Detroit, we are teaching people, and when a person goes to obtain an operator’s license, he must attend a course on driving, laws, etc. Even in the schools, we are (Continued on last page.) AnnouncingA ,

Opening WeekMonday, May 26th, the Peoples State Bank of Plymouth will open its

doors and begin business. In the week of May 26th to May 31st, we intend to celebrate the occasion appropriately.

We want everyone in Plymouth and the surrounding country to pay us a neighborly visit during Opening Week. It’s our “house warming” and the latch-string is out.

Souvenirs for EveryoneThere’ll be a souvenir for every man and for every woman, and for

every boy or girl. We want you all, and heartily invite you to come.

And if you open an account with us during Opening Week (and we hope you will), there’s a special little reward for doing that too. And just think how proud you’ll be. some day that you were one of the first to open a savings account here.

C U LTIV A TO R S?Yes cultivators. It won’t be long before you will

need them—Two horse cultivators, One horse cultivators and the garden variety.

Also plow points and all kinds of plow repairs are needed now.

And don’t wait until, haying and harvesting times are here before ordering your new machines and repairs for the old ones. Twenty-four hours delay then may mean the loss of your crop. Do it now.

Hupmobile could not use materials less fine—and still be Hupmobile. For the very heart and soul of Hupmobile success is the way it stands up—year

‘'■after year—at astonishingr low cost.Let it try to cheapen any of

Hiits finely built parts and it would at once lose that superiority. So in the end, it would not profit the buyer. The motor car question, as we see it, comes down to this.

W. H.Farmington,

T he buyer can pay the Hupmobile price, safe in the assurance that a higher price cannot bring him anything higher than the Hupmobile in honest quality. Or, he can pay less and content himself with less th a H u p m o b ile quality and satisfaction. It will cost you nothing but the time you put irr, to come in and see Hupm obile quality with your own eyes, as shown by our PartsDisplay.

Some people have the idea that it costs a lot of money to have running water in the country, with faucets in the kitchen, bathroom, barn and outdoors. That isn’t so !

Considering what it means in the way of convenience, comfort, health, time and labor-saving, there isn’t anything else that costs so little and gives such satisfying returns.

And once your installation is made, you are through with expense. The operating cost is practically nothing. Tlie V-K W ater Supply System, the water-works that furnishes the water, operates on an average cost of only one cent a day. That’s alL

Through the years new friends soon became old friends and now on the threshold of our sixth year we count our friends by the hundreds and we value their friendship and confidence in us above all else.

Celebrating our new year in business is an important event with us and with you—an event that is thoroughly planned for. And now we are splendidly ready to climax all past achievements with ten days of record-breaking values. No matter what section of the store you visit, you will find it crowded with exceptionally attractive values in superior merchandise.

If we were to list all the specials we have prepare for this event, it would he necessary to use a half dozen pages. You must come to the store to fully know the genuine opportunities we have prepared as a “Thank.. You” for your past patronage.

Hot Water for the Bath.

A bathroom is not complete unless there is hot water, ready to flow from the faucet, at any time.
