Home2Class Group Thirteen
ConceptOur concept was to create an app which would enable the
user to plan
their journey from their own home to their assigned class room.
The
user could plan their journey on public transport, which would
leave
them at UCD and from there, using internal floor plans; our app
coulddirect them to their classroom.
Group FormationFor our assignment we were asked form a group and
to solve an
information problem using either an App or a Mashup. Our group
was
formed by association and we quickly found common ground.
The
Group consisted of 6 People:
Myself
Frances
Haider
San
Eammon
We all agreed to meet every Friday after the Lab.
MethodFor the first few weeks, after each lab session on
Fridays, we met in a
coffee shop to thrash out our ideas. We quickly decided base
our
assignment on an App, using the App Maker Store to create
it.
Next we went looking for an information problem which affected
us all.
As we are part-time students, we were not familiar with the
UCD
campus and attached buildings. So we felt this was an area
which
needed more investigation.
Although there are plenty of campus maps around UCD we
discovered
that there was no way of viewing internal floor plans of the
buildings
unless you were in that particular building.

We delegated tasks to each member and set realistic targets
for
completion.
As there were six people on the team we each took a task to
focus on. I
was charged with developing the multimedia portion of the
assignment. This was to include a short video describing
andadvertising our finish product.
IssuesUnfortunately our group of 6 was reduced to 5 and then 4,
and with
them went the ideas and their segments of the project. I had
also
engaged with Google Floor Plans, which would have allowed us to
use
Google Maps to zoom in in relevant buildings to display their
floorplans. After uploaded the floor plans of the Newman
Buildings,
regrettably Google took too long to approve the summited plans
so we
were unable to use this function.
ReflectionI found the module most informative, relaxed and
enjoyable. While
some of the topics were fun they most defiantly had a more
serious
underside. The concept of ethics, privacy and social change
werefascinating.
This module has genuinely opened my eye to:
The sheer amount of Social Media environments available
The range of groups catered for
The social dependency we are creating on the internet and
constant
connectivity.
Had we not been delayed by Google or an ever diminishing group,
I feel we
would have been in a position to deliver a unique and convenient
app. We
would like to have extended it to cover all buildings on the UCD
campus so as
to assist the student who has not found their feet yet.
