ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN PORTFOLIO 2014UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES

North BondiApartments//JUNE, 2014//AUTOCAD, REVIT, SKETCHUP//VRAY, PHOTOSHOP//INDESIGN, ILLUSTRATOR

Service and circulation have been compacted and pushed internally, to allow for maximum surface activation.

Developed alongside the residential aspect was a commercial front activation that drew its identity from the apartments. A lively cafe that is responsive to residents and locals, and a bar that operates at night, with acoustic treatment specified to prevent intrusive noise.

Located on the turning point of Brighton Boulevard, North Bondi, this apartment complex responds to the unique qualities of its site. With views to the west and south, and primary sun from the north and east, the project proposed an interesting challenge in this conflict.

The response was to develop a series of dual aspect apartments that follow a simple logical progression of spaces. With the major living spaces and entrance occuring on the North and Western facades of the buildings, and bedroom, study and private living spaces occuring towards the East.

The entire project was undertaken with particular respect and adherance to the BCA, DCP and Local Council Planning Guidelines. It was also book ended with a design report.

Following a rigorous site analysis, including both on-site studies and research into the various site regulations and existing conditions, a simple massing logic was devised to respond to these qualities. This ensured the proposal had a direct and prioritised connection to site, where its unique qualities aid in enriching the design.

> Extrude from the setback parameters of site at height limit for maximum density> Raise a podium for commercial activation> Excavate mass for solar access and increased surface area> Indent to pick up on the urban landscape and contour of the site> Excavate for celebrated site access and circulation> Step-down the front apartments to meet the DCP height specifications

VisualPresentation

In presenting the project a lot of the impact is in the perception of spaces and the experiential qualities of space.

The use of human scale renders, and accurate to scale sections, elevations and plans enables the client to better understand the design and materiality of the proposal.

WavertonPeninsulaProject//NOVEMBER, 2013//AUTOCAD, PHOTOSHOP//SKETCHUP, INDESIGN

Drawing upon rich historical and cultural roots, the redesign of the Waverton Peninsula and its coal loader creates a cultural identity for the space. This proposal encompasses its community and historical background, as well as its current usage as a site for communal activity.

Reflecting upon the traditional indigenous use of the Balls head peninsula, there is a focus on dance and music, with spaces that pay tribute to Bora rings and the ritual right of passage. By drawing upon this heritage, the proposal envisions a community being drawn together by art, music and architecture.

The architecture is one of landscaped elements and concrete platforms. There is an architectural rhythm that allows for a varied usage of the site, steps of varying treads and depths, as well as a rich material variation.

Coupled with the upper coal loader intervention, a secondary redesign and adaptation of the existing coal loading cavities provides for fascinating spaces for installation pieces.

7//JANUARY, 2013//CARDBOARD, BOXBOARD//RHINO, SKETCHUP//TIMBER, MDF, PLYWOOD//CORRUGATED STEEL ROOFING

Working as part of an Architectural collaboration, myself and a consort of other designers worked together to design, implement and construct a shed, shade and seating structure. The work was done by commision of St Finn Barr’s primary school in Launcestan, TAS.

One of the biggest challenges of the project was working with such a large, diversified group of individuals, including students of Architecture and Interior architecture from across the nation, licensed builders and carpenters as well as professional architects such as Peter Booth (of Booth & Watts).

Australian Timber DesignWorkshop

My personal roles included team management, co-ordination and communication, and acting as one of two chosen students working with Rhino, Grasshoper and proprietry software from a Hong Kong firm to create a polymorphic shade structure.

//VARIOUS 2013 - 2014//REVIT, AUTOCAD, INDESIGN

These projects encompass multiple sets of construction drawings including wall sections, details, fire proofing and water proofing solutions in accordance with the BCA regulations. They are complimentary to larger design studio projections and challenged me to consider the projects structural and material composition as part of the holistic design expression.

MODELMAKING//VARIOUS, 2013 - 2014//WHITE CARD, BOXBOARD

Numerous models developed for university work. In my process models represent massing studies, final documentation as well as material tests.

Collaboration on a number of interactive experiences. As half of a two man team I manage art direction, interactive design, audio design, rapid idea implementation, and marketing.

These personal projects have taught me a lot about the value of a cohesive design focus. Working in a cross disciplinary team I have developed an ability to confidentally process design ideas as they manifest in team discussions.
