List-Image Mapping

[Old] HitApp link: https://prod.uhrs.playmsn.com/judge/Views/judge?HitAppID=40810 1/29 Judge feedback: • Add relevant definition -- "does the list item text describe the image?" • Add a Adult/Detrimental button for judges • Add a clarification regarding mixed lists (numbers + bullets, etc.) • "Are there corresponding images visually close to the list items and represent the list item text?" • How to handle collages? Don't include collages.

Goal Get labels for whether the shown list items represent the dominant list within a page. There can only be 1 dominant list while there may potentially be multiple lists on the page.

Labeling Task Task 1

1. [Q1] For a given page, view the rendered page and identify whether there is a dominant list within the page (Yes vs. No).

2. [Q2] For the given dominant list (from the page), identify whether this is the correct dominant list. 3. [Q3] If Yes to both above, identify where there are any images that properly match the list items

within the dominant list. 4. Click "next question" button in top of right rail..

Task 2

5. [Q4] For a given image, label what list item (from the dominant list) the image matches.

Notes List definition A list is a "number of connected items or names written or printed consecutively, typically one below the other" (link). We traditionally see lists on webpages in bulleted or numbered fashion. They can be ordered or unordered. In some cases, list items are semantically grouped together but not formatted in typical list fashion; for example, section headings in an article or How-To pages, vs. recommendations in a Top-N list. Dominant Lists We define dominant as a list that helps readers summarize the page content or addresses the page's main topic. • A dominant list must contain 3+ list items with associated images (1+ image per parent list item). • There should only be 1 dominant list per page despite a page having multiple lists. A dominant list

could be just one of these lists. • If page in a foreign language, please try clicking on "Translate this Page". This will open a new tab

with auto-translated (to English) page. If it still doesn't make sense, please skip this question. • TIP: Page titles can be good references that often represent page topic.

Dominant Non-Dominant

List images are considered associated with list item based on how closely an image matches the text within the list item (excluding dynamic ad/sponsored images), and the image's visual proximity to the list item text. List images are typically located close to the list item text -- can be on side of text or above/below; however, they are only defined as associated (re: mapped) when the image is also relevant to the list item title and description. 1 list item may have more than 1 image associated.

List definition [old]

A list is a set of items grouped together, beginning with bullets, numbers or other consistent symbol. They may include any combination of text, images, and videos. They may be ordered or unordered.

List Types • Explicit lists - Bulleted (numbered, other symbol, etc) • Semantic lists - no explicit markup, but a set of items if you understand the meaning of a block of

text

List Elements • List title = the topic binding together a set of list items • List item = an individual bullet/number/symbol/meaning within the set

o List item order o List item text o List item description o List item image

P2 -- Galleries & Slideshows List vs. Gallery For image search, there may be instances where images are grouped together in a grid format which we call galleries. • Lists have text as king content within the list item and the image is supplementary asset to build

on the message.

Page 7: Domin - cached.blob.core.windows.net

• Galleries are different from lists because the image is king content within the list item and text is supplementary used to describe the image. They typically don't have any particular order or specific semantic meaning. They may have no text at all. https://animals.desktopnexus.com/cat/cats/

List vs. Slideshow There may be cases where Webmasters show a set of items within a slideshow form, instead of typical list or gallery. This is another form of list that we still want to capture. Similar to galleries, but text is also essential to each list item's message, not just the image. https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/best-cars
