Year in Review On March 11, 2014, DVIS became the third agency in Oklahoma to be certified by the Oklahoma Attorney General to help adult victims of sex trafficking. Our staff is now trained to identify and provide services, including counseling, shelter and advocacy to victims. We appreciate the generous supporters of our ReBUILDING Lives Capital campaign to build a new 80 bed emergency shelter, 20 unit transitional living apartment complex and counseling offices. We’ve thoughtfully designed trauma-informed spaces to house individuals and families. The new shelter and transitional housing are set to open in March 2015. The shelter will include these new features:• Private bathrooms in every room, so we will now be able to house families with teenage boys• An area of the shelter for victims of human trafficking, providing specialized counseling services and as-needed care• A room specifically designated for male clients• A kennel for dogs and cats In 2013, we completed the I Stand awareness campaign, which you saw highlighted in our 2013 Annual Report. Twelve notable men in the community and nation took a stand against domestic violence. I’m proud that the campaign won a Silver Link Award of Merit from the Public Relations Society of America – Tulsa chapter. As I look back over the year, I am pleased to report we’ve noticed an increase in victims’ family members and friends contacting us for support on how to help their loved one. We attribute this to the increase in national and local media coverage on domestic and sexual violence. Thank you for supporting DVIS. Together we are saving lives.

For 14 years, Jake didn’t allow Cate to work or spend time outside of their home. His controlling behavior escalated and he was physically abusive toward her. Cate

didn’t think there was a way she could escape from him and support their five children.

After a brutal fight, police were called and brought Cate and her children to DVIS’ emergency shelter. Jake kicked Cate in the eye causing bruising and swelling and

slapped their 4 month old.

With the support of her counselor, she received a protective order and started attending counseling regularly to discuss long-term goals. Cate worked on her

resume and learned job skills. Her counselor arranged for her to receive clothing, linens and essential items she and her children needed.

When Cate was given a baby carrier, bouncer, and toys for her children, she wept, and thanked the staff repeatedly. She continued to attend DVIS groups, and

started to gain self-esteem and confidence, feel empowered and realize that she could make it as a single mother. Her counselor helped her find an apartment, and within one month of moving into the shelter, Cate and her children moved

into their new home.

On moving day, Cate wept for joy and thanked her counselor saying that she didn’t know how she could have started over on her own with her children if it hadn’t

been for DVIS.
