One of the main problems that can reduce the

efficiencyofanextractorfanispoorsiting.There

areanumberofbasicrulesthatcanbeappliedin

ordertoensurethatafaniscorrectlysited:

Rules

•Always install the fan in the furthest window,

wallorceilingfromthemainairinletpointand

atahighlevel.Thiswillensuremaximumairflow

offreshairthroughoutthewholeroom.

•Alwaysensurethatthere issufficientprovision

forreplacementfreshairintotheroombyusing

internalgrillesinthedoor,ceilingorwall.

• If installing a fan in a room containing a fuel-

burningdevicewhichhasanon-balancedflue,

there must be sufficient replacement air to

preventfumesbeingdrawndownthefluewhen

thefanisonmaximumextract.(SeeBS5440&

BuildingRegulationsforspecificrequirements.)

•Exhaustairmustnotbedischargedintoaflue

used for exhausting fumes from appliances

suppliedwithenergyotherthanelectricity.When

deciding themethod forexhaustairdischarge

and intake flow rates, the requirements of all

relevantauthoritiesmustbestrictlyadheredto.

•Donotsitefanswheretemperaturesarelikelyto

exceed40ºC.

•Wiringshouldbecarriedoutinaccordancewith

currentIEERegulations(UK)orstandardsofthe

countryinquestion.

•Ensure that the instructions provided are

followedduringinstallation,withparticularcare

taken tocheck thesupplyvoltage, fuse rating

andwiringarecorrect.

• IEE regulations require mains voltage

fans to be positioned out of arm’s reach

of the person using the bath or shower,

i.e.outsidezone0,1or2asstated inB7671.

Mainsvoltagefansandcontrolsshouldalsobe

sitedawayfrompotentialwaterspray.

•AlwaysuseanIn-lineDuctorSafetyExtraLow

Voltage(SELV)fantoventilateashowercubicle

(zone1).Themainsvoltagetransformercontrol

unitwithSELVoutputmustbepositionedaway

fromanypotentialwatersprayandoutofarm’s

reach(outsideofzone0,1or2)oftheperson

usingthebathorshower.

• If the duct passes through an unheated roof

void the duct should be insulated to reduce

the formationof condensation.A verticalduct

shouldalsobeinstalledwithaweatherproofroof

cowl of sufficient free area for the air volume.

Acondensationtrapmustbe fitted inorder to

release the condensation build up. Horizontal

ductsshouldfallawayfromthefanunit.

• If theductpasses througha firecompartment

wall, a Domus FireBrake must be used to

maintain the integrity in accordance with

ApprovedDocumentBBuildingRegulations.

UNDERSTANDING ZONES

When siting a fan, consideration also needs to be

given to the positioning of the fan in relation to the

electricalwiring.

Zone0isdefinedastheinteriorofthebathorshower

tray.

Zone1islimitedby:

(i) the finished floor level and the horizontal plane

corresponding to the highest fixed showerhead or

wateroutletorthehorizontalplanelying2.25mabove

thefinishedfloorlevel,whicheverishigher;and

(ii)theverticalsurface:

a)circumscribingthebathtuborshowerbasin;or

b) at a distance of 1.2m from the centre point of

the fixed water outlet on the wall or ceiling for

showerswithoutabasin.

Zone 1 does not contain Zone 0. The space under

thebathorshowerbasinisconsideredtobeZone1.

However,ifthatspaceisonlyaccessiblewithatool,it

isconsideredtobeoutsidethezones.

Zone2islimitedby:

(i) the finished floor level and the horizontal plane

corresponding to the highest fixed showerhead or

wateroutletor thehorizontalplane lying2.25metres

abovethefinishedfloorlevel,whicheverishigher;and

(ii)theverticalsurfaceattheboundaryofZone1and

theparallelverticalsurfaceatadistanceof0.6mfrom

theZone1border.

Forshowerswithoutabasin,thereisnoZone2butan

increasedZone1isprovidedbythehorizontaldimen-

sionof1.2mmentionedinRegulation701.32.3(ii)b.

BUILDING REGULATIONS

Since1990theUKBuildingRegulationshave

recognised the importance of ventilation

in domestic dwellings, with the publication

of Document F1 and from this date all new

buildings and approved extensions must

make provision for ventilation in kitchens,

utility rooms, bathrooms, shower rooms

andWCs.

Polypipe Ventilation has always advocated

the need for ventilation in order to create a

healthier living environment. The products

showninthiscatalogueallexceedthecurrent

revisionof theUKBuildingRegulationswhen

usedinthecorrectapplication.

Therecommendedextractrateforadomestic

kitchen is 60 l/s, that can be reduced to

30 l/s ifacookerhood isusedor theextract

fanisoverthehob.Utilityroomsifaccessible

from inside the dwelling: 30 l/s; bathrooms

andshowerrooms:15l/sandseparateWCs:

6 l/s. In addition, if any of the rooms have

non-openablewindows, the extract fanmust

incorporate a timer capable of a 15 minute

overrun.

PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

Ensuring air quality of the highest standard

significantly reduces the problems caused by

damp, condensation and unwanted smells that

may prove a risk to the inhabitants or structure

ofabuilding.

Inadequateventilationcancausemany

FAN SELECTION

The extraction rates recommended by the UK

Building Regulations should be seen as the

minimum requirement. Amore accurate method

ofcalculatingtheoptimumrate,oriftheroomto

beventilatedisnotcoveredbytheRegulations,is

asfollows:

1.Measurethe length,breadthandheightofthe

room(inmetres)andmultiplythemtogetherto

obtaintheroomvolumeincubicmetres.

2.Multiplytheroomvolumebytherecommended

numberofairchangesperhour,shownonthe

table, toachieve theextract rateof the fan in

m3/hr.

3. Select a fan with a duty the same as, or

exceeding,thecalculatedextractrate eg:

CHOOSING AND INSTALLING THE

CORRECT DUCTING

Because it isnormallyhidden,aductingsystem

isoftennot consideredan importantpartof the

construction or refurbishment of a building.

However,theimportanceofthecorrectductingis

becomingrecognisedbythebuildingindustry.

It isnotalways the faultof thecookerhood/fan

manufacturer when dreams of fresh rooms and

lownoise fansarenotachieved. Itcanoftenbe

thatthewrongsizeorconfigurationofductinghas

beenselectedbytheinstallerorsystemdesigner.

Asitcannotbeseen,airmovementisoftenmade

more complicated than it actually is. Air moves

justaswatermovesanditissometimesusefulto

visualiseaproblembysubstitutingairwithwater.

In ventilation installations the aim is normally to

movetheairfromitssourcetotheoutsideofthe

house as efficiently and quietly as possible. It

is, therefore, common sense that to do this

effectively,theshorterthedistancetheairhasto

travel, thequicker theaim isachieved. It isalso

common sense that if an obstacle is put in the

way, such as a bend, the process will become

moredifficultastheairwillloseitsmomentumand

mayrequiremorepowerfulassistanceinorderto

achievetheaim.

Extractorfansvary inpower justascarsdoand

the results are reflected inmuch the sameway.

A high performance/specification car should be

quieter,lastlongerandgenerallyprovidethedriver

with more comfortable and satisfactory results.

However,toensurethis,thecarneedsastraight

smooth road on which to travel effectively. The

roadfortheairtotravelwhenusinganextractor

fan is the ducting. Again, it is common sense

that a more powerful fan would need a more

efficient duct - a Rolls Royce owner would not

consider driving their car in off-road conditions!

It isworth remembering thatmanycookerhood

manufacturers’ guarantees will be invalidated if

the correct size or an inferior specification of

ducting is not used to match the power of the

hood.

A few key installation guidelines can be applied

to help ensure that the ducting selection is

correctand installed inawaythatoptimisesthe

extractor’sperformance.

•Choose the shortest and most direct route

to the outside or the pointwhere the air is to

be released. Do not expect toomuch of your

extractionunit-tryblowingatafriend3or4m

awayandseeiftheycanfeelanything!

•Ensurethatbendsarekepttoaminimum.

• If the duct system is boxed in or completely

inaccessibleformaintenance,itisrecommend-

ed that all joints are secured, using Domus

Plastic Ventilation Duct Sealant, for increased

peaceofmind.

•Checktheextractioncapabilityandconnection

size of the fan and choose an appropriate

size duct. Be sure to verify thewhole system

performance.

•Air travelsbetter througha roundduct,as the

airwilltravelatalowerspeed,resultinginless

turbulence, vibration, noise and energy loss.

However, the installation space available may

preventthisideal.

•A rigid duct is more efficient than a flexible

ductandshouldbeusedwhenpossible.

• Ifflexiblehoseisused,thehoseshouldremain

tautandasstraightaspossible.

•Special consideration should also be given to

the selection of thewall terminal and the use

ofbackdraftdampers,as thesealso increase

airresistance.

• SeeBuildingRegulations(seepages4&5).

Inpractice,theactualinstallationmaymeanthat

all the above points cannot be adhered to, but

is most effective for slow moving air, such as

withtumbledryers,butcanbeusedwithhigher

UNDERSTANDING DUCTING

pERfORMANCE fIGURES

Theperformanceof thefan isdependentonthe

performancecapabilityofthefanitself,thesizeof

theduct,theductingconfigurationandthetypeof

wallterminalinstalled.

Each ducting run can be planned in advance

anditsperformancelevelsevaluatedsoitcanbe

ascertainedifthedesiredinstallationwillmeetthe

requiredlevel.

Technical data is available for the extractor fan/

cookerhoodinstallerorsystemdesignerinorder

toachievetheoptimumoverallextractionrate.This

datahighlightshowmuchpressure(measuredin

Pascals) isgenerated in theductingrunandwill

showiftherequiredairflowratecanbeachieved.

The diagram above shows a typical pressure-

flowratecurveforanextractorfanorcookerhood

(flowrateinformationshouldbeavailablefromthe

fan/cooker hoodmanufacturer). The information

it contains is obtained by a series of laboratory

measurements starting with free flow at zero

pressure,then,bysteadilyincreasingthepressure

that the fan has to operate against, the volume

flowandpressureateachpointisderivedinorder

toplotthecurve.

As detailed in the diagram, in order to achieve

the current UKBuilding Regulation flow rate

requirement for a kitchenof 60 l/s (or 216m3/hr,

30l/sor108m3/hr,forahoodwithin300mmofhob

centreline),themaximumductsystemresistance

whenusingthisparticularcookerhoodcanbeno

greaterthan150Pascals(Pa).Therefore,itcanbe

readilyseenthatbyreducingtheresistanceofthe

ductsystem,theextractperformanceofthefanor

cookerhoodisincreased.Furthermore,itcanbe

statedthataductingsystemwithalowresistance

isaductsystemwithagoodperformance.

The performance of a ducting system is greatly

affectedbyboththeoveralllengthoftheducting,

the number of bends contained within it and

thetypeofoutlet.Thesystemfit isalsovital,as

incompatibleandpoorly-fittingductincreasesthe

riskofairandcondensationleakage.Therefore,it

isimportanttohaveasinglesourceofsupplyfor

yourductingproducts.Thetotalresistanceofthe

ductsystemcanbecalculatedbysimplyadding

up the resistance of each component. Each

productwithintheDomusrangehasameasured

resistance value for the three UKBuilding

Regulation flowrates.These figuresaredetailed

withinthiscatalogue.

Note:For every extractor fan or cooker hood

installation, provision should be made for

make-up or return air. In most dwellings this

is catered for by natural leakage. However,

some high performance products may require

the installation of an air supply set (see

page24).

The following isacalculationexampleusing the

typicalductinglayoutshowninthediagram.

Therefore the airflow performance of the

cooker hood connected should exceed

39Pa@30l/s.

Sealing Duct Systems

Sealing rigid ducting systems

Solution: Domus Plastic Ducting SealantCode: DDSEAL (page 17)

If a round or rectangular rigid duct system needs to be permanently sealed, the recommended solution would be to use NEW Domus Plastic Ducting Sealant. It has been designed specifically to provide a professional airtight and secure seal between plastic ventilation ducts and fittings.

It has a high quality acrylic polymer base providing a low shrinkage flexible seal. Importantly, it is solvent-free and will not attack adjacent sensitive surfaces.

Domus Plastic Ducting Sealant incorporates non-hazardous, mould-resistant fungicides and also being a water-based formulation, any excess can be easily wiped away with a sponge and warm water.

In some situations it may be prudent to provide greater mechanical strength to a joint by using a combination of Domus Plastic Ducting Sealant and Domus PVC Ducting Sealing Tape.

Sealing insulated ducting systems

Solution: Domus Aluminium Duct Sealing Tape (page 21)Code: 50TP45

To ensure a suitable seal on a Domus ThermaPipe or Domus Insulated Hose connection, Domus Aluminium Duct Sealing Tape should be used to maintain a seamless surface and joint in order to retain the thermal integrity of the duct system.

Sealing PVC flexible hoses or semi-permanent rigid duct seals

Solution: Domus PVC Duct Sealing Tape (page 23)Code: 123 (33m), 123-4 (4.6m), 40123 (4.6m pre-packed)

When a semi-permanent seal is required or it is not practical to use a sealant, such as when making a rectangular flexible hose joint, Domus PVC Duct Sealing Tape should be applied.

It has been designed to offer both good mechanical strength and a clean, white, tidy finish.

Sealing Domus FireBrake ducting systems

Solution: Domus FireBrake Acoustic Intumescent Mastic (page 30)Code: MAS87

In order to effectively seal a Domus intumescent FireBrake into a fire partition wall, Domus FireBrake Acoustic Intumescent Mastic must be used.

Gaps in the wall around Domus FireBrake of up to 12mm can be made good with Domus FireBrake Acoustic Intumescent Mastic, to provide both a complete smoke seal and a reduction in sound transmission through the duct system.

Deciding on the most appropriate method of duct sealing

Domus duct systems are primarily of asimple andeasy to install push-fitdesignto suit low pressure ventilation systemsandtoprovideanairtightsealthatreducesairleakage,whichthenresultsinimprovedperformance.

Push-fit solutions are suitable for the majorityof traditional kitchen (e.g. on the top of wallunits) and bathroom installations usingDomusduct systems. However, increasingly there isa requirement to either permanently or semi-permanentlysealjointsincertaininstances.

The greater need for possible sealing of jointshascomeaboutdueto:

When should a duct joint be sealed?

Whenaductsystemcarrieshighlevelsofmoist•air,itisrecommendedthatapermanentsealisappliedasexcesscondensationcouldoccurand bleed around joints by capillary action,leadingtostainingonadjacentsurfaces.Thisisparticularlythecaseifthesystemisinstalledadjacenttoaporoussurface,astheleakagecouldcreateproblemssuchasdampsurfaceceilingpatches

Sealing of joints is recommended for•installations where performance levels arecriticalandanypotentialforairleakageneedstobeeliminated

If theductsystem isboxed inorcompletely•inaccessible for maintenance, it is re-commended that all joints are secured, forincreasedpeaceofmind

Sometimes sealing simply secures a•connection or maintains the integrity of thesystemconfiguration

In applications where it is necessary to•regularlydismantleorremovetheductingformaintenancecleaningpurposesNOpermanentsealingmeasuresshouldbeapplied

Provides continuous and controlled domestic ventilation from

a single extraction unit which can be used in up to five rooms,

using only one external wall outlet. A two speed* ball bearing

motor is fitted to ensure long life and efficiency. The second

speed acts as a powerful extraction boost, which can be used

after a bath or cooking when removal of unwanted air is most

needed. Fan spigots are fitted with flow regulators to balance the

system and a simple to operate damper plate device regulates

airflow in the kitchen.

External Centrifugal fans (White Metal)

For installation on the external wall. By having a

protected fan outside ensures that all noise created by

the fan is kept outside the building. This creates a more

pleasant living environment in terms of noise reduction

as well as smell and moisture removal.

Ideal for applications where it is vital or desired that

noise levels are at an absolute minimum. This could

be in a domestic kitchen or for other places such as

recording studios or medical consulting rooms.

These fans are speed controllable and are fitted with

long lasting ball bearing motors.

Extra High power In-line Mixed flow Duct fans (plastic)

Ideal for domestic and light commercial use.

Excellent when higher performance is required in

domestic bathrooms and kitchens especially for long

ducting runs of approx. 10m. Also recommended for

use in multiple toilet or shower cubicle installations.

Therefore, they are commonly used in restaurants,

offices, sports centres and schools. They have the

added benefit of being suitable for continuous running.

These fans are not covered by the Kitemark certification.
