“The animals of the world

exist for their own reasons.

They were not made for

humans any more than black

people were made for white,

Hello Animal Welfare Society, In April 2011 my fiancé Jon and I adopted ―Noel‖ now named ―Stella‖. She had a rough time at first. She had just had kittens before she was dropped off to you. When I adopted her she was fixed and when I brought her home she hid under the bed for two days, she was so scared. Once she came out from under the bed though, she never went back. She has been a wonderful addition to our household. She is now very social and well -loved. She loves to race around the house, cuddle, and is a purr-machine. Getting her is one of the best decisions Jon and I have made! Jon and I will be getting married in August and plan on donating to AWS instead of giving favors at the wedding. We consider ourselves blessed to have found the best companion we could ask for. Thank you! -Jess, Jon, and Stella Former PSPCA shelter dog ―Juice‖ thinks foster kittens are the best! Juice’s mom, Peg says, ―I never imagined when I started fostering, that the best surrogate mom for our orphan litters would be my 72 pound male pit bull!‖ Just because you have other pets at home doesn’t mean you can’t foster… fill out an application today and help us save lives!

A nimal Welfare :

to prevent suffering and cruelty to animals

To provide care and good homes for pets in

need

Puppy Mills :

99% of puppies sold in pet stores come

from puppy mills

Almost every puppy sold in a pet store

has a mother who will spend her entire

life in a tiny cage, never being petted,

walked, or treated like a dog

About 1 million breeder dogs are confined

in puppy mills throughout the country

As established by Avenson v. Zegart, a

puppy mill is “a dog breeding operation in

which the health of the dogs is

disregarded in order to maintain a low

overhead and maximize profits”

Commercial breeders (puppy mills)

depend on retail pet stores and internet

sales for support

Dogs from puppy mills who outlive their

breeding potential are sold to laboratories,

dumped and left to die, or simply killed

Stats and Facts

How Shelters Help:

In 2011 the PSPCA:

- Over 9,000 animals were adopted into new homes

- Rescued almost 2,000 animals from cruelty and neglect

throughout the state

- Over 20,000 animals were spayed/neutered (the most

effective way to prevent against pet overpopulation)

How you can help

Take Action Against Puppy Mills 1. Refuse to purchase an animal from a retail

store, the internet, or an unknown source

2. If choosing a Pedigree dog: visit the kennel, make sure both parents are on-site, the facility is clean, and the animals are socialized and well-cared for

3. Report suspected abuse to authorities

4. Check adoption resources first when looking for a new pet

Question breeders and pet stores

Urge pet stores to support pet rescues

Educate family and friends about puppy mills

Share links and stories to raise awareness

Talk to legislators/authorities to strengthen laws

Inspect breeders thoroughly and report red flags

Organize meetings, fundraisers, or adoptions to decrese puppy mill demands

No more profits for puppy mills and the pet stores that support them

Help out Local Shelters

1. Volunteer– even if only for an hour a week

2. Foster– Give extra love and attention

3. Sponsor a kennel

4. Adopt– Give a new chance at life

5. Host a fundraiser or yard sale– give all the pro-ceeds/profits to a local shelter

6. Get Social– Inform and empower others

7. Purchase an ―Adopt‖ license plate

8. Attend educational classes or programs

9. Donate– blankets, dry and wet food, cat and dog treats, newspapers, waste bags, play toys, cat litter, and more are always needed

“The question is not, „Can they reason?‟ nor,

„Can they talk?‟ but rather, „Can they

suffer?‟” (Jeremy Bentham)

Tips for caring for your Pet

1. Don’t leave a dog in a car on a hot day - even keeping the windows cracked

doesn’t allow enough hot air to escape

- if you see a pet in a hot car, don’t walk away and hope for the best, call the police

2. Put together an emergency plan for your pets

3. Tips for success with a newly adopted dog

-limit stress; provide structure; develop routine; build your relationship; establish sensible confinement; provide play, exercise, dog toys; attend training classes

4. Have routine vet check-ups 5. Get your animals fixed - an unsprayed female cat, her mate,

and their offspring will grow their family to approximately 12 cats in their first year, 67 in the second, 367 in the third, …

6. Attend training and educational classes -helps create a more productive, safe,

and stress-free environment 7. Know what foods and household items

are poisonous to your animal 8. Take actions to prevent heartworms,

fleas, ticks, and diseases 9. Hygiene: bathe and clip nails regularly

“The greatest pleasure of a dog is that

you may make a fool of yourself with

him, and not only will he not scold

you, but he will make a fool of himself

too.” (Samuel Butler)
