Works in preparation for major construction of the Metro Tunnel and new Anzac Station are underway in the Domain precinct. These works will lead to St Kilda Road being reduced to one lane in each direction for an extended period between Dorcas Street and Toorak Road West, meaning there will be significant changes to pedestrian, cyclist, public transport and vehicle movements in the area for several years.
Changes to the way you move around the Domain PrecinctThis brochure provides an overview of the transport changes, and a snapshot of the construction activities required to establish our St Kilda Road work site and to divert trams and other traffic around the Anzac Station construction site. St Kilda Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction for up to four years while the station is built.
Construction activity Works to be carried out during this time include the removal of existing medians and kerbs, road service works to allow for relocated tram tracks, installation of new poles for relocated overhead tram wires and tree pruning and removal. All construction works are subject to the relevant planning approvals.
Cycle lanesSt Kilda Road is one of Melbourne’s busiest cycling routes. During the works a dedicated on-road bike lane will be maintained on St Kilda Road in each direction. Some changes may be required during off peak periods and will be clearly signed.
Creating a safe worksite and keeping you movingThese changes have been designed to safely move people around the precinct while construction takes place.
Tram changesFrom mid-January to mid-February 2018, a new tram stop will be constructed on Park Street, South Melbourne. From 2-6 February, buses will replace Route 58 trams, and Park Street will be closed to traffic between St Kilda Road and Kings Way. Further detail is available from the Metro Tunnel website.
In the April 2018 school holidays, major works will be carried out on St Kilda Road to realign tram tracks and divert them around the work site. In preparation, the Bowen Crescent tram stop and the pedestrian crossing will be out of service from mid-January 2018. Further detail on the April tram works and the impact to services will be available closer to the start of construction.
