Man's best friend mayhelp to save your life. Re-searchers from Schiller-hoehe Hospital in Ger-many have determinedthat dogs have the un-canny ability to sniff thebreaths of individualsand accurately point outsmells that may be in-dicative of lung cancer.Dogs that participated ina research project were
able to find the uniquesmell of the disease in 7out of 10 sufferers. Theywere also able to differ-entiate between COPDand lung cancer, evenamong people whosmoked or took prescrip-tion drugs that may havemasked the cancer-spe-cific chemical com-pounds the dogs cansmell. There also may be
proof that dogs can rec-ognize other types ofcancer through smell. However, more researchis needed to test that foraccuracy.

As men and women age, they can ex-perience certain physical changes andhealth challenges. Vision impairmentis one condition that many associatewith aging, and cataracts are a pri-mary concern for those of middle-ageand older.Today, more than 22 million Ameri-
cans age 40 and older have cataracts.According to the National Eye Insti-tute, by age 80, more than half of allAmericans will either have a cataractor have had cataract surgery.Cataract is clouding of the eye's lens
that blocks or changes the passage oflight into the eye. Normally the lens isclear, which allows light to passthrough to the back of the eye, so thata person can see well-defined images. If a cataract forms and the lens be-comes covered in an opaque film, lightcannot pass through easily. The re-sult will be fuzzy vision, almost likelooking through a fogged-up window. If cataracts are not treated, an indi-vidual may eventually lose most of hisor her vision.
One or both eyes can be affected bycataracts. In the case of both eyes be-ing compromised, one eye is usuallyworse than the other. The primary risk factor for developing
cataracts is age. The older a person is,the greater their risk. However, thereare several other risk factors as well.* Intense heat or long-term exposure
to UV rays from the sun* Certain diseases, such as diabetes* Obesity* High blood pressure* Inflammation in the eye* Hereditary influences* Long-term steroid use* Eye injuries* Other eye diseases* SmokingPrevent Blindness America provides
free information to the public on every-thing from cataract basics to tips onwhat to expect from cataract surgery.Visit preventblindness.org/cataract orcall its toll free number at (800) 331-2020. And, as part of its new HealthyEyes Educational Series, PBA offers a
specific online module on cataracts, including a Power Point presentationand guide. The organization sharesthis information about cataracts:* Early symptoms of a cataract may
include cloudy or blurry vision.* Lights may cause a glare, seem too
dim or seem too bright.* Sufferers may also find it difficult to
read or drive, especially at night.* Individuals may have to change
their eyeglass prescriptions often. There are no medications or other
treatment options besides surgery tocorrect cataracts. In the United States, cataract surgery has a 95 percent suc-cess rate, and patients often have20/20 or 20/40 vision post-surgery.Cataract surgery is also the most fre-quently performed surgery, often per-formed as an outpatient procedure.
In Canada, where, according to Sta-tistics Canada, seniors will make up21 percent of the population by 2026,cataract surgery is also frequent andwell tolerated. Approximately 250,000cataract surgeries take place in Cana-da each year, according to The Nation-al Coalition for Vision Health. It is widely recommended to get regu-
lar eye exams to check for cataractsearly on."By getting a complete, dilated eye
exam, your doctor can discuss withyou the best strategy to protect yourvision well into the future," said HughR. Parry, president and CEO of PreventBlindness America. "We encourageeveryone, especially those ages 40 andolder, to make their vision a priority byscheduling an eye appointment today."

Dear GodQQQQ && AAA MMiinn ii ss tt rr ii eess
Dear God,I would really appreciate it if you could post
this request.I am doing a survey for a summer course and
I was wondering if I could get thoughts fromyour readers on the following questions. The topic is: “The Bible - Myth or Truth”• What proof do you have that there is a God?• If there is a God, does every religion have
the same God?• Jesus; is He God or is He man or just a
mythical figure?• Many people say that they are religious,
what makes a person religious?• Why do religious people argue over what
they believe the Bible says?• If there is a heaven, are Christians the only
ones who will go there? All responses to these questions will be com-
piled; then put in a form of an essay for dis-cussion in my fall class. I ask that each oneanswer the questions with sincerity of heartand mind and with an honest response.I ask that everyone send their responses to:[email protected] Or
[email protected] send your comments in as quickly as
possible. I would like to have this project doneby the beginning of August. In that way, I willhave a few day of summer vacation.
Thanks for your involvement,Carrie Ann

The old adage, “an apple a day keepsthe doctor away,” is on the choppingblock. Instead of one apple a day, experts are now recommending two.
Coined a “miracle fruit,” the unas-suming apple stunned a team ofresearchers at the Florida StateUniversity. They found that eating twoapples a day for six months can reduceartery-blocking LDL by 23 percent.According to Bahram H. Arjmandi, Ph.D., director for the Center forAdvancing Exercise and NutritionResearch on Aging at the Florida StateUniversity, “I buy a bag a week and tryto eat two per day. I am convinced thisis what I should do if I want to remainhealthy.”
According to the U.S. AppleAssociation (USApple), mountingresearch suggests that powerful antiox-idants in apples and apple productsmay play an essential role in reducingthe risk of many of the world’s mostprevalent diseases, including cancerand Alzheimer’s disease.
To encourage consumers to eat evenmore apples, USApple offers the follow-ing ”Delicious Duos,” teaming applesand apple products with other power-house ingredients that help supportspecific health and nutrition goals.
Superfood Duo: Apples + SalmonBenefit: Helps ward off
heart diseaseIn the study conducted at the Florida
State University, women who ateapples experienced a 23 percentdecrease in LDL “bad” cholesterol, anda 3 to 4 percent increase in their HDL“good” cholesterol — “a boost difficult toachieve with drugs or exercise,” saysArjmandi, who led the study. Combinethe power of apples with good-choles-terol-raising omega-3-rich salmon in
this Apple Balsamic Salmon dish.Apple-Balsamic Salmon
Yield: 4 servingsPrep Time: 25 minutesBaking Time: 8 to 12 minutesSpecial Tools: 4 12-inch-long pieces
parchment paper4 4-ounce skinless salmon fillets, 3/4
to 1 inch thick1/4-1 teaspoon fine sea salt (normal
table salt can be used)1/4 cup apple jelly2 teaspoons aged balsamic vinegar3/4 cup julienne-cut, unpeeled,
Granny Smith or other green apple (1/4x 1 1/2-inch-long slivers)
3/4 cup julienne-cut, unpeeled Fujior other reddish apple (1/4 x 1 1/2-inch-long slivers)
1/3 cup very thin sliced and quarteredleek (white and light green portion only)
Rice pilaf (optional)Course-ground black pepper1. Preheat oven to 450° F. Fold each
piece of paper crosswise in half. Cut 4half-heart shapes 7 inches longer and 4inches wider than the fillets (the foldededges will be the centers of the hearts).Open each paper or foil heart; set aside.
2. Lightly sprinkle salmon with 1/4teaspoon salt. Place each fillet near thecenter on one side of each heart.
3. Heat apple jelly over low heat or ina microwave oven just until melted.Remove from heat; stir in balsamicvinegar. Spoon mixture evenly over fil-lets. Toss together apples and leek.Place mixture evenly on top of fillets.
4. Fold opposite side of each heart upand over the fish and apple mixture.Starting at top of heart, fold edges toseal open sides by making small tightfolds. Twist tip of hearts to close pack-ets. Place packets on baking sheet.Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 12 min-utes until fish flakes easily. (Carefullyopen packets to check doneness.)
5. To serve, cut packets open byslashing a large X on the top of each, then fold back paper. Transfer packetsto dinner plates and serve with rice. Or,if desired, remove fish with apples frompackets and place slightly on top of rice;spoon over juices. Season to taste withadditional salt and the pepper.
Recipe Note:This recipe makes enough balsamic-
apple juice for serving over a rice orbarley pilaf. If you prefer less juice, decrease the apple jelly to 3 table-spoons and balsamic vinegar to 1 1/2teaspoons.
Superfood Duo: Apples + OatsBenefit: Helps improve
brain healthA clinical trial found that that con-
suming two 4-ounce servings of applejuice daily significantly improved moodand behavior among a group of patientsdiagnosed with moderate-to-severeAlzheimer’s disease. Also, CornellUniversity research suggests thatquercetin may be the compound inapples that protects brain cells againstoxidative stress associated withAlzheimer’s. Superfood Duo: Apples + Greek YogurtBenefits: Helps protect bone
healthA study published in the American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggeststhat older women who eat plenty offruits, including apples, may have alower chance of bone fractures thanthose not getting their fill. Create yourown apple and yogurt parfait for break-fast.
Superfood Duo: Apples + GingerBenefits: Helps fight inflammationInflammation in the body can cause
