Antarctic Expedition to the Andes

Estudio Calentamiento GlobalCuando Cristián Donoso planificó la expedición a los Andes Antárticos, nunca imaginó que esta sería la experiencia más extrema que haya realizado en su vida. Los Andes Antárticos, es una zona que no ha sido explorada por el hombre, pero si ha dejado sus huellas. Hoy se aprecian cambios muy negativos en su paisajes y geografía, que están afectando seriamente la conservación de especies que habitan este indómito y maravilloso lugar.

En el mes de noviembre del año 2009, la expedición conformada por Cristián Donoso y Mario Sepúlveda, partió rumbo a la zona Antártica de la Cordillera de Los Andes, en el extremo sur de Chile. Fue un viaje de tres días para cruzar el paso Drake y desembarcar en Punta Portal, que está en la Península Antártica de la zona chilena, Tierra de O’Higgins.

La primera tarea fue armar el domo y construir un muro de nieve, porque los pronósticos anunciaban un frente de mal tiempo. Este frente duró nueve días y tuvo la particularidad que la lluvia era cálida, por lo que el muro que protegía el domo debía ser reforzado constantemente. Al mejorar las condiciones, la sorpresa de los exploradores fue perturbadora, pues el paisaje blanco al que habían llegado tuvo un cambio radical, el 50% de la nieve caída en la temporada de invierno había desaparecido. Esto no era una buena señal de lo que estaba sucediendo.

La ruta definida, era llegar al Plató Foster y cruzar al Plató Gerber, estas son mesetas formadas por nieve milenaria. La travesía se inició desde el mar hacia el ascenso del Plató Foster (altura 2.200mt). Las condiciones climáticas eran adversas, una densa neblina que no permitía visibilidad, más un terreno agrietado y fuertes pendientes, que les tomo un tiempo de ascenso de dos meses. Los avances eran muy lentos y los riesgos muy altos.

When Cristian Donoso planned the expedition to the Antarctic Andes, never imagined that he would face the most extreme experience he had made in his life. The Antarctic Andes is an area that has not been explored by man, however it has left its mark. Today we appreciate very negative changes in their landscape and geography, which are seriously affecting the conservation of species, that inhabit this wild and wonderful place.

In November 2009, the expedition formed by Cristian Donoso and Mario Sepulveda, left for the Antarctic area of the Cordillera de Los Andes in southern Chile. It was a three days trip to cross the Paso Drake and landed in Punta Portal, which is located in the Chilean Antarctic Peninsula, in Tierra de O’Higgins.

The first task was to build the dome and build a wall of snow, because the forecasts announced a bad weather front, which lasted nine days and had the peculiarity that the rain was warm, melting the snow, so the wall that protected the dome had to be constantly reinforced. By improving the conditions, the surprise of the explorers was disturbing because the white landscape, that they first saw, had a radical change, 50% of the snow that fell during winter disappeared. This was not a good sign of what was happening.

The route was to reach the Plató Foster and cross the Plató Gerber. These are ancient plateaus formed by 1000-year-old snow. The journey began from the sea to the top of Plato Foster (2.200mt height). The weather conditions were adverse, a dense fog reduces visibility near zero, more cracked terrain and strong slopes, it took them two months to reach the top. The progress was very slow and the risks, too high.

Cuando lograron llegar a la cumbre del Plató Foster, pudieron distinguir el océano Atlántico en toda su magnitud, así mismo apreciaron un espacio de un nuevo mar, que existe desde el año 2002. Originalmente era una plataforma de hielo flotante, que se formó con los aportes de nieves de los glaciares que bajan de la montaña. Esta plataforma tenía una data de 9.000 años y colapsó gracias a la formación de lagos en su superficie que la fueron perforando y finalmente la desintegraron. Se calcula que tenía una superficie equivalente a la provincia de Concepción. Hoy es un mar blanco lleno de témpanos y entre medio grandes témpanos tabulares (rectangular) de más de 1 Km. Los glaciares que bajan, donde existía la plataforma, también se están viendo afectados debido a su rápido desplazamiento, ya que la plataforma actuaba como un muro de contención. Si se compara la apariencia actual de estos glaciares con la que tenían hace 10 años, es muy inquietante el cambio, porque hay campos de grietas que en las imágenes satelitales no aparecen y eso es un efecto directo del calentamiento global. En particular, está afectando la península de la zona de Tierra O’Higgins, que se está calentando 5 veces más rápido que el promedio mundial del planeta.

Como dato, desde el año 1945, que se está monitoreando el clima en la península Antártica y los datos demuestran que hay un incremento de 3º C de la temperatura media anual. Estos cambios, tiene consecuencias nefastas para los glaciares y para la vida silvestre, específicamente, en pingüinos y ballenas. La cadena alimenticia de ambas especies es el krill, que se genera bajo el hielo que se forma en el invierno, pero este hielo marino ha disminuido en un 40%, producto de la mayor temperatura, por lo que estas especies realmente están sufriendo una crisis alimenticia.

Otros efectos lamentables, es el caso de los pingüinos Emperadores, que crían a sus pichones sobre el hielo marino, que actualmente está colapsando más rápido. Cuando se acerca el verano, los pichones están demasiado jóvenes y caen al mar y mueren ahogados. Este hecho está produciendo una disminución importante de estas especies. Sin embargo, el caso más alarmante, es él del pingüino Adelia, cuyas poblaciones han disminuido en un 60%. Pero las razones de la disminución de estas especies son diferentes, el caso del Adelia, necesitan espacios libres de nieve para poder nidificar (nidifican en tierra), entonces al nevar más hay menos espacios libres para la nidificación. Y esto se debe a que al haber mayores temperaturas, hay mayor evaporación del agua marina y aumenta la precipitación de nieve en verano. Como consecuencia, hay mucho estrés entre ellos por conseguir su espacio para anidar, lo que es una causa importante de la disminución de estos ejemplares.

When they reached Plato Foster’s top, they could distinguish the Atlantic Ocean in all its magnitude, likewise appreciate a space of a new sea, which existed since 2002. Originally a floating ice shelf, which was formed by the contributions of glaciers´ snow that descend from the mountain. This platform had a 9,000-year data and collapsed due to the formation of lakes on its surface that were drilling and finally disintegrated it. It was estimated that it had an area equivalent to the province of Concepción. Now, t had turned into a white sea full of ice floes in between rectangular icebergs of more than a half-mile.

The glaciers that came down, where the platform used to be, was also being affected due to its rapid movement, so the platform acted as a retaining wall.

If we compare the current look of these glaciers with the one they had 10 years ago, we can see that the change is very frightening, because there are cracks in those fields that doesn’t appear in the satellite images, and that is a direct effect of global warming. It is affecting Tierra O’Higgins area in particular, which is warming five times faster than the world’s average.

As data from the year 1945, when began the Antarctic’s weather monitoring till now, temperature has shown an increase of 37.4 ° F a year. These changes have direct consequences in the glaciers and wildlife, specifically for penguins and whales.The food chain, Krill is the staple food for both species, which grows under the ice that forms during winter, but the sea ice has decreased by 40% due this raise of temperature, so that these species are actually suffering a food crisis.

Another regrettable effect is the Emperor Penguins` case; they raise their young pigeons on the sea ice, which is now collapsing faster. When summer approaches, the pigeons are too young and fall into the sea and drown. This is causing a significant decline in these species. However, the most alarming is that of the Adelia penguin, whose populations have declined by 60%. But the reasons for the decline of these species are different, the case of Adelia, need snow-free areas to nest (nest on the ground), then more snow there is, less nesting spaces there are. This happen because having higher temperatures, causes more evaporation and more snowfall in the summer seawater and increased snowfall in the summer. As a result, there is a lot of stress between them to get their nesting space, which is a major cause of the decline of this species.

Whales are also being affected, according to Donoso; it is not so evident because of the new treaties that prevent whaling. The main problem is that there is not enough food for the whole population. In conclusion, the consequences of global warming are easy to see and it is frightening, specifically in glaciers and the wildlife.

Calentamiento Global

Las ballenas también se están viendo afectadas, pero según lo que manifiesta Donoso, no es tan evidente por los nuevos tratados que impiden su caza. El tema central es que no cuentan con el alimento que pueda cubrir a la población. En conclusión las consecuencias del calentamiento global se esta evidenciando de manera crítica, específicamente, en los glaciares y en las vida silvestre. “Aquí se presenta un paradoja, porque llegamos a una zona que no han sido tocada por el ser humano. Somos los primeros en cruzar el Plató Gerber y los primeros en bajarlo donde nunca ha existido presencia humana, sin embargo se trata de espacios que están profundamente intervenidos por el hombre, porque ya no es necesario que llegue materialmente a un lugar para destruirlo, ahora basta con la contaminación que genera para destruir la Antártica. A nivel global estamos produciendo estos efectos destructivos con nuestro accionar”... Cristián Donoso

Testimonios de la travesía

Clima Extremo

En cuanto a las temperaturas que bordeaban los - 25º debo destacar que el vestuario funcionó espectacular. Llevamos unas chaquetas que no tienen costuras y yo tenía mis dudas, pero quedé impresionado con la flexibilidad y el buen diseño. Lo mismo puedo decir con los pantalones que fueron a toda prueba. En relación a las primeras capas, impecables, estuvimos 3 meses sin ducharnos, solo nieve en las partes más estratégicas, pero el material espectacular mantuvo el cuerpo a temperatura y sin olores a diferencia de capas con otros materiales.

Reflexiones:

Parte del éxito de la expedición fue gracias al equipo que llevamos de primer nivel, tanto en vestuario, como los Kayac y equipo satelital, ya que esta experiencia fue más que extrema:Tres meses donde pasamos la navidad, año nuevo y el cumpleaños de mi compañero.Tres mes viéndonos las caras… solos… no vimos a nadie másTres meses pisando nieve y hieloTres meses sin ver vegetación, nada verde..Tres meses tomando agua destiladaTres meses comiendo lo mismo Pero así y todo lo repetiría, este viaje es un hito dentro de las diferentes expediciones que he realizado en mi vida.

Extreme Weather

With temperatures bordering the - 13 ºF we tested our Doite garments and they were superb. I had my doubt about the seamless jackets that we were wearing, but I was impressed with the flexibility and good design. I can say the same thing about our pants, they have an unswerving quality.About our first layers, they were impeccable. We were 3 months without shower, only snow in some strategic parts, but the material remained spectacular. It kept body temperature and odorless. This is a big difference between these first layers and other materials.

Reflections:

The expedition succeeded, in part, thanks to our first class equipment. We needed high quality garments, kayaks and satellite system because this experience was really extreme:Three months where we spend Christmas, New Year and my partner’s birthday.Three months seeing each other ... alone ... no one else.Three months treading on snow and iceThree months without seeing vegetation, anything green.Three months drinking distilled waterThree months eating the same food.Even though, I would repeat everything. This trip is a milestone in the expeditions I have done in my life.
