"DX" is an expression borrowed fromwireless telegraphy, and signifies "longdistance." Listening to a broadcaststation which is several hundred milesor more distant is considered DX re-ception, and is one of the most fascin-ating phases of radio.

The ability to pick up distant stationsis dependent upon many factors. Threeof these factors are inherent qualitiesof the receiver itself, namely-sensitiv-ity, selectivity and volume.

SensitivityThe sensitivity of a radio receiver is

a measurement of its ability to respondto very weak signals. Sensitivity ismeasured in terms of microvolts permeter, and when a manufacturer statesthat his set has a sensitivity of 5 mic-rovolts per meter, it is meant that theset will give the standard normal out-put when operated in a signal fieldstrength which will give the set an in-put of 5 microvolts per meter. Lessmicrovolts per meter means a greaterset sensitivity.

The sensitivity of practically all themodern sets is such that the noise levelis reached even on the quietest nights,hence it is safe to assume that nearlyall receivers are capable of playing agreat amount of distant stations, provid-ing the other limiting factors are equal-ly favorable. A regenerative detectorwith two stages of audio amplificationbehind it, would play stations across thecontinent, just as it did in the old dayswere it not for the fact that the modernbroadcasting conjestion requires fargreater selectivity than the three -tuber possesses. The sensitivity isthere, but it availeth not because one ortwo powerful nearby stations will coverthe entire tuning range.

SelectivityHence sensitivity can not be con-

sidered as an individual factor, butmust be in combination with selectiv-ity. Selectivity is the ability of a setto confine all stations to a narrow spaceon the dial, the ideal condition beingwhen each station covers a maximumdial space of ten kilocycles. Underthese circumstances there would be nooverlapping of stations in adjoining

channels, either distant or local. Thiscondition is not obtained in the factory -built modern radio receivers, but aneffort is made to approximate it with-out too greatly impairing tone quality.Here again we find that selectivity can-not be considered as an individualfactor. Since it has a direct bearing ontone quality, a compromise must bemade between the two. It is obviousthat the design of a radio receiver re-quires good judgment as well as en-gineering skill, since these vital factorsare interrelated in such a way that acompromise between them must bechosen which will result in maintainingthe maximum tone fidelity commensur-ate with a reasonable distance range.

VolumeAssuming that a given radio receiver

has sufficient sensitivity to respond toa very weak signal from a distance,and that the selectivity is sufficient topermit tuning in distant stations in thegaps between the local stations on thedial, we next require that the set hassufficient audio amplification to buildup these weak signals to good loudspeaker strength, so that the distantstations will be easily audible. Thisfactor, volume, is usually present whensome of the other factors are not, sowe may well dismiss it without furtherdiscussion.

With a receiver possessing all of theabove qualities nicely blended, we findthat the other vital factors in DX re-ception are (1) Installation, antennaand ground; (2) Noise level, electricalinterference; (3) Tuning skill and pa-tience.

InstallationThe installation of the set frequently

ruins the DX possibilities which themanufacturer has very carefully builtinto it. The antenna and ground arevery often exceedingly makeshift in na-ture, and constitute the real hindranceto distance reception. We often hearthe question, "Why can't I get distance,when so-and-so with the same make ofset gets the whole country?" And al-most invariably the fault lies with apoor antenna and ground installation.If the set owner desires the maximum

Apiece of wire in the picture moldingand a ground to a convenient pipe maybe quite satisfactory for local recep-tion, but no set owner with such aninstallation is justified in complainingof the lack of DX reception. He mayeven get some distant stations, but byno means the maximum reception ofwhich the receiver is capable.

GroundThe best ground connection consists

of a metal body buried deep enough inthe ground to reach the moisture -bear-ing strata. This may consist of any ofthe special marketed grounds, burieddeeply, or an iron pipe or steel roddriven down. It is desirable to providemeans of pouring water down to thepoint of contact, salt water being pref-erable because it will raise the con-ductivity of the surrounding soil. Thisseparate ground connection is superiorto grounding to the water pipe. Thelatter is the hitching post for otherelectrical systems, and may or may notconstitute a good ground connection. Inmany cases the actual electrical resist.ance between the point of contact onthe pipe and the point where the pipegoes underground is so great that theconnection to the pipe does not com-prise an actual ground connection atall. It connects the radio more tightlyto the door -bell and telephone systemsthan to Mother Earth.

AntennaThe antenna effects the reception in

three ways. First, it is primarily in-tended to comprise the "pick-up" me-dium or "intercepting" surface where-by the waves radiating from the trans-mitting station are required to give upa bit of their energy in passing. It islogical that the amount of energypicked up by the antenna will dependupon its size. The larger the antenna,the more energy will be received. ForDX reception, one would suppose that

time difference throughout the world,and have difficulty in computing thetime at distant points with respect tothe local time. Particularly is this truein the short-wave field, where foreignDX reception is not only possible, but aregular occurrence. For instance, whenthe Pacific network gave us the Londonrebroadcast recently, no doubt manylisteners were puzzled to know the

should hear Manila on short waves at6 a. m., you will know that it is 10

p. m. there. In order to determinewhether it is the same day, or the pre-ceding or following day, follow thisrule: Crossing from dark to light areaat midnight, indicates the followingday. Crossing from light to dark area,indicates preceding day. As an exam-ple, 4 a. m. here is 9 p. m. in Tokio ofthe preceding day.

here again we find that another factoris affected by antenna size, namely, se-lectivity. Enlarging the antenna broad-ens the tuning and destroys the selec-tivity of the set. We must compromiseby putting up as much wire as we canwithout making the local stations spreadtoo much on the dial. Having a good"pick-up" on distant stations will availus nothing if the nearby local stationblankets them.

The size (length) of antenna will bedetermined by the proximity of thenearest station or stations and the in-herent characteristics of the set. Ifthe antenna is too small, there will notbe enough energy picked up from thedistant stations to give an audible sig-nal. If the antenna is too large, thenearest stations will spread too much

The dealer's service man whomakes the installation should know theset and the location sufficiently well todetermine the proper antenna lengthwithout experimenting. The third effectof the antenna upon reception is its"pick-up" ability with respect to "noise"or electrical interference.

80cal that the portion of the antennawhich is near and parallel to the housewiring, conduit, power lines, metal lath,and other bodies which are carrying orradiating the interference, is picking upmore noise than radio signal, whileusually the high and outdoor portion ofthe antenna is picking up more radiosignal than noise.

It becomes obvious that if we wereto shield the lower portion of the an-tenna and prevent it from picking upeither noise or signal, leaving only theupper portion exposed, that the resultwould be more signal and less noise.This has proven satisfactory in manycases, though it has its disadvantagesalso. It is accomplished by using lead -covered wire from the set to a pointwell out of and above the house, wherethe aerial wire proper begins. Thisexposed wire should then be at rightangles to all power circuits, telephonelines, trolley lines and feeders, etc. Infact, for the ideal condition it shouldbe vertical, and not horizontal. Thelead sheath on the lead-in is thengrounded to the water pipe. The groundwire to a good buried ground connec-tion may likewise be shielded, the leadsheath being grounded to a water pipeand not to the radio ground.

The disadvantage of this system isthat the shielded lead-in has consider-able capacity between aerial and groundand some of the received energy thustakes this path rather than throughthe radio receiver. To compensate forthis loss, a larger antenna must beused than is normally required. Electri-cal interference is usually directional,and hence improvement may often bemade by changing the direction of an

Tuning and PatienceThere is a certain knack in DX tun-

ing, as in all things. Some DX sta-tions may be stumbled on accidentally,due to their strong volume, but in mostcases one must patiently search forthem. Due to fading, and to the factthat conditions vary greatly from dayto day, a fan may try for a certain sta-tion night after night without success,and then some night the station willcome in strong and clear, only to againfade into oblivion. It is this uncer-tainty that makes DX reception so fas-cinating. William MacDonald of ChulaVista, the DX champion of the world,has many stations in his verified fileswhich he has heard but once in all ofhis years of patient tuning. He is con-tent to listen for hours to a faint car-rier in the same channel night afternight for a month if necessary untilhe finally hears the call. Most of ushave neither the patience nor the timeto do this, but it exemplifies the spiritwhich piles up fat DX logs.

There are little tricks which onelearns from experience. For example,many Eastern stations operating in thesame channels with locals during theevening can be received in the earlymorning hours before the locals startbroadcasting, due to the difference intime. When the locals shut down foran SOS at sea, the DX fans have awonderful time, logging stations theynever heard before. It's a great game!
