Everybody fancied BB. Every man deliquesced into = a lather of sweat at just the thought of being in the same room asher. Ev= ery woman dreamed of having BB teach her to cha-cha-cha. Little girls (in = the movies anyway) loved beingpicked up and swung about by this perfect o= lder sister. Every dog, cat, rabbit or horse that she ever kissed in her f=ilms (a popular device for showing off her pout without any inconvenient m= ale lips in the way) grew wild withexcitement at the honour the human rac= e was bestowing on it. Waiters fawned, musicians swooned and gendarmesblu= shed as Brigitte Bardot drove through the capital in her little sports car= in Une Parisienne.In real life, she was globally adored, the first Continental actress to = achieve Hollywood-size fame. From the mid-1950s,her face, her generous = mouth, her long slender legs and her fabulous shape became a fixture on = magazine covers,newspaper diary columns and the new phenomenon of te= levision sets in Europe and the USA. "She is the princess of

pout, the c= ountess of come-hither," breathed Time magazine. "Brigitte Bardot exuded= a carefree, naïve sexuality thatbrought a whole new audience to F= rench films." It wasn't just her screen image. On a visit to London in t= he Fifties,she appeared on BBC TV, where she explained the trouble her = little dog was causing: "E make, uh, pee-pee wherev' 'ego," she said, w= ith a little moue of concern that she'd gone too far. Viewers, especiall= y men, were enchanted.

She was so clearly a face from the future, just as U= rsula Andress and Twiggy would be in 1962 and 1966. Bardot wascurvaceou= s in the approved Hollywood style (though her 18-inch waist was freakish= ) but what set her apart was thecombination of eyes, pout and attitude.= You could tie her hair in a chignon or in Pollyanna pigtails, squeeze h= er intoCapri slacks or a ruched ballgown but you could do nothing to le= ssen the impact of her cool, sidelong glance, or thesublime wiggle with= which she ambled down the street. By 1960 she and Marilyn Monroe (that = other great wiggler)were the most celebrated pin-ups of their day. Wher= eas Monroe looked grown-up but acted like a little girl, Bardotlooked y= oung but acted like a girl who knew far too much already. She was beauti= ful, sassy, impatient with Fiftiespomposity and ever-so-slightly melanc= holy. At least, men everywhere hoped she was, so they might "look after =her".

Musicians and singers felt a special affinity with her. She made several= hit records in the 1960s with SergeGainsbourg, who became a lover. His= famous No 1 collaboration with Jane Birkin, "Je t'aime ... moi nonplus= ", was originally recorded with Bardot doing all the orgasmic groaning, = but she persuaded him notto release it. She had affairs with the French= singers Gilbert Becaud and Sasha Distel.Her love of harmony and melody wasn't confined to Fr= ance. Bob Dylan claimed that he dedicated the firstsong he ever wrote t= o Bardot, though, frustratingly, he never mentioned its name. A rumour h= as longpersisted that she and Jimi Hendrix had sex at Heathrow Airport = shortly after their first meeting. GeorgeHarrison reportedly married Pa= tti Boyd because he liked her resemblance to Brigitte, and the rest of t= heBeatles were equally smitten. John Lennon had the band's press agent = arrange a face-to-face meetingwith her at the Mayfair Hotel in 1968, wh= en he was 29 and she was 34. Lennon was so nervous aboutmeeting the god= dess that he dropped LSD beforehand, to give him some Dutch courage. The= encounterwasn't a great success. "I was on acid," he recalled ungallan= tly in Skywriting by Word of Mouth, "and shewas on her way out."It's true that her movie career of 50 or so films ra= n out of steam in the early 1970s, and her singing hardlysurvived the S= ixties, but Brigitte Bardot never disappeared from the world stage. She = announced herretirement from bombshell duties in 1973 and turned instea= d to (highly visible) political activism. But herfans' and her nation's= adoration of the original Sex Kitten means that her less appealing beli= efs andpronouncements will be temporarily forgotten next month, when sh= e celebrates her 75th birthday on 28September. Photographic exhibitions= from her pouty heyday will be launched on both sides of the Channel.A = special birthday tribute is mooted for London Fashion Week, and even Jea= n-Paul Gaultier's newcollection is inspired by her look (see panel, rig= ht). It's no surprise that the hottest model of the moment,Lara Stone, = is a wanna-BB. So many women have been over the last half-century.She was born in Paris in 1934 into a comfortable, Ca= tholic, middle-class milieu. Her father Louis ran thefamily engineering= business. Her mother Anne-Marie encouraged Brigitte and her younger sis= ter Mijanouto take up dancing. The former discovered she had a natural = talent and seemed headed for a ballet career,enrolling at the National = Superior Conservatory of Paris for Music and Dance in 1947, when she was= 13:one of her classmates was Leslie Caron, later to star in Gigi. Two = years later, Brigitte made her modelling

debut in a fashion magazine, an= d made the cover of Elle in 1950. The cover shot came to the wolfish gaz=e of her svengali, Roger Vadim, an indifferent film director with an eye= for a pretty girl. He showed Elle to afriend called Marc Allégr= et, who asked her to audition for his new film, Les Lauriers Sont Coup&e= acute;s.She got the part, though the film project was cancelled. But a = seed had been sown, Brigitte gave up dancefor acting and Vadim became d= etermined to get his new protegée (whom he married when she was 1= 8)on celluloid.Her debut wasn't brilliant. It was Le Trou Normand, = a feeble comedy vehicle for a Gallic Norman Wisdomcalled Bourvil. In he= r scene, Bardot is discovered standing before a mirror buttoning a dress= , a 17-year-old ingénue of luminous beauty (and some vestigial pu= ppy-fat). Seeing her, poor young Nadine Basile, theteenage heroine, sob= s to her father, "Papa, am I ugly?" Other films - she made 17 in t= he first four years- were cutie-pie fluff: in Doctor at Sea, she = was the love interest for Dr Simon Sparrow, played by DirkBogarde, whos= e screen attitude was that of a sexless young uncle. Vadim was unhappy w= ith the way hercareer was going. So in 1956, when she was 22, he direct= ed her himself, for maximum sexualité, in Et Dieu... Créa= La Femme (And God Created Woman).Though it launched her career, it's hard today to se= e what all the fuss was about. There is nudity, but it'salmost entirely= off-screen, shot from behind, hidden by props or occluded by gauze. The= plot is sliver-thin. Among her hobbies are topless sunbathing and flirt= ing withchaps: with rich, yacht-owning Curd Jurgens, with poor, boatyar= d-owning Christian Marquand and with hisbrothers, one of whom she marri= es, apparently on a whim - Jean-Louis Trintignant, who was to star= inseveral movies of the French nouvelle vague, and who lived with BB f= or two years.Juliette leads them a merry dance, alternately petul= ant and passionate, sulking and snogging (she's animpressively enthusia= stic screen kisser), posing in a series of vivid outfits, including a ti= ght-fitting topwith bare shoulders which became her signature garment. = Fights break out when she's around, guns aredischarged, families break = apart and the town is scandalised by her behaviour: on her wedding-day, = sheretires to bed with the recently bashed-up groom, while the receptio= n lunch proceeds without them - untilshe does come down in a peig= noir to fill a couple of plates with chicken, grab some wine, and take t= hemback upstairs. Friendless and torn between two lovers, she seeks sol= ace in brandy and mambo jazz - towhich she dances on a table with= whorish abandon, until brought to her senses by some husbandly slapsac= ross the face.After Et Dieu, nothing was the same. It previewed at= Cannes, where Bardot, predictably, caused asensation on the beach: she= seemed to popularise the bikini all by herself. She became an internati= onalstar, and the embodiment of French minxiness for a generation. It w= as said that Sam Levin's postcardphotograph of BB, shot from the rear w= earing a white corset, outsold postcards of the Eiffel Tower in1960. Sh= e made a few good movies - Le Mépris (Contempt) with Jean-L= uc Godard and Vie Privée (A VeryPrivate Affair) with Louis Malle= , in whose later film Viva Maria! she and Jeanne Moreau co-starred as tw= ochorus girls who start a South American revolution and, almost by acci= dent, invent striptease. Butalthough she embraced ambitious films with = talented directors, Bardot found herself stuck in a typecastlife: she w= as the timeless sex kitten, the chronic horizontale, the bed-hopping cha= nteuse, the much-married lapsed Catholic with the pout that brought men = to destruction.In a striking act of defiance, she announced her ret= irement from the movies in 1973, just shy of her 40thbirthday - w= hich she celebrated with a naked photo-shoot in Playboy - and, sti= ll living in St Tropez,became a strident supporter of animal rights. Sh= e campaigned against the serving of horsemeat in Frenchrestaurants. With the "greening" of the American economy, it's not= surprising that the technologybehind hybrid cars and vehicles of all ki= nds is an increasingly attractive target to would-be information thieves = looking to make a fast buck.

This summer, in fact, a Michigan couple was charged in just such a ca= se-for allegedly walking off with anestimated $40 million in Genera= l Motors (GM) hybrid-related trade secrets, hoping to sell them to one o= fGM's Chinese competitors.

What's a trade secret, exactly? Information with = independent economic value, like blueprints, chemical formulas,research= and development, marketing strategies, and manufacturing processes that = the owner has taken reasonablesteps to keep confidential. In 1996, Congr= ess passed the Economic Espionage Act to protect trade secrets from crimi=

nals and foreign governments in order to preserve the health and competit= iveness of the U.S. economy. It was underthat law that the Michigan coup= le was charged.

According to the indictment, Shanshan Du joined GM a= s an engineer in 2000, signing an agreement toprotect proprietary inform= ation created or obtained during her employment. In late 2003, she asked = tobe reassigned to work involving the motor control system of hybrid veh= icles. That gave her access tocompany trade secrets, and over the next c= ouple of years, she allegedly copied thousands of sensitive GMdocuments = onto external hard drives and flash drives-and even sent a few over= her GM e-mail account.She is accused of then passing that information t= o her husband, Yu Qin, who was employed by a powerelectronics company bu= t who was also secretly running his own company that was involved in hybr= idtechnology.

Yu Qin allegedly used the GM information given to him by his wife to = communicate with others, by e-mail and in person, about newbusiness ven= tures that would provide hybrid vehicle technology to a Chinese automotiv= e manufacturer and GM competitor. He alsoallegedly used the information = when he applied for a job in the hybrid vehicle field and submitted r&eac= ute;sumés listing one of his"major accomplishments" as = the design and simulation of the hybrid motor vehicle motor control sys= tem-the very subject of GMtrade secret documents found in his poss= ession.

Qin's employer found GM's trade secret information on a har= d drive used by Qin for his company's business, and GMsubsequently= contacted the FBI. With the company's cooperation-along with= the assistance and expertise of ourcomputer analysis experts-we w= ere able to gather the evidence needed to arrest the couple.
