Dog Agility Game Rules

What is Dog Agility?

An agility course is like an amusement park foryour dog. The dog takes quest from a handler tomake his way through an obstacle course whileracing against the clock or other dogs.

For beginner dogs or as a practice course foradvanced dogs already involved in dog agilitycompetitions.

A great way to get started in the most popular dogsport that has been growing by leaps and boundsover the last few years!

Benefits of Play

Enhance your dog’s natural abilities as theymaneuver their way through an obstacle courseguided by a handler. Provides quality exercise andgreatly enhances the relationship and bondbetween dog and human.

Keeps your dogs senses sharpened, their bodyproperly exercised and their brain occupied.

Unlike many other dog sports and competitiveactivities, dog agility is relatively easy to learn andmost dogs can do well and have fun with a mini-mum of training.

Object of the Game

For the dog with handler to master or completethe course obstacles successfully with out commit-ting fouls. Beat personal best time if competingalone or have the fastest time of the group if com-peting with other dogs.

1. How to PlayA. Practice and Training

Your dog won’t be able to run the course per-fectly the first time you try. A Training Tipssheet is included.

B. Order of Obstacles

There is no specific order in which each obstacleshould be set-up. Set up in an order which fitsyour yard or space available for the kit and alsoin a manner which you think would be best foryour dog or all dogs competing.

No leashes are allowed when maneuvering theobstacles (except during the learning and train-ing process (see training tips).

As your dog becomes more skilled maneuveringthe obstacles, you can vary the order of set-up.In agility competitions, no course is ever set upthe same.

C. Penalties/Faults

Penalties can be used for missed or foulingobstacles when more than one dog is completingagainst each other for the best time. Based onthe amount of time it takes the dogs to completethe course, you can create your own time penal-ty rules for missed or incorrectly maneuveredobstacles. For example, if it takes dogs an aver-age of forty seconds to complete the course youcan add on a five second foul for each fault ormissed obstacle.

D. Winners/How to win

You can have an initial goal of just completingthe course.

You can then record the time it takes to com-plete the course and try to better your best time.

Finally, you can compete against other dogs andtry to place first, second or third.

2. How to Maneuver through each Obstacle

A. Start/Finish Line

This is what you’ll use as thestarting and finishing point foryour course.

B. High Jump

The height will vary according to yourdogs shoulder height and also ability tojump and clear the hurdle. Start low andadjust the level up according to your dogssuccess and ability. You can mark yourdogs highest jumps with a marker or tape, this will also help you know where to startthe next time you set up the course.

C. Open Tunnel

The dog must simply run through thetunnel at the fastest possible speed.

E. Pause Box

This test a dogs ability to be undercontrol at any time, even whenexcited. The dog must be fullyinside the box (if the dog is too bigto fit inside completely, being inthe center of the box is sufficient)without moving for five seconds.

D. Weave Poles

These test a dogs precision. Yourdog must start at one end, enterto the right of the pole with headfocused straight ahead and thenweave back and forth througheach of the poles while huggingthe center line.

Note: Of all the obstacles, weavepoles are probably the most diffi-cult for dogs to master andrequire lots of practice.
