DOES GOD EXIST?THE TELEOLOGICAL ARGUMENT

Psalm 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

There may be good reasons for belief in God, but the

argument from design is not one of them…despite all

appearances to the contrary, there is no watchmaker in

nature beyond the blind forces of physics… Natural selection,

the unconscious, automatic, blind yet essentially nonrandom

process that Darwin discovered…has no purpose in mind. It

has no mind and no mind’s eye. It does not plan for the

future. It has no vision, no foresight, no sight at all. If it can

be said to play the role of watchmaker in nature, it is the

blind watchmaker.

DESIGN OF THE UNIVERSE

This universe is uniquely adapted to provide for life here on earth. The earth is

perfectly placed and oriented such that life can be sustained.

The physical laws of nature are amazingly precise and mutually dependent on

each other’s precision for that life to be maintained.

Is it statistically likely for all of those things to occur – not just each occur, but

all occur at the same time – by random chance? Or does this mean there’s

“design”?

Dawkins admits, “The more statistically improbable a thing is, the less we

can believe that it just happened by blind chance. Superficially, the obvious

alternative to chance is an intelligent Designer.”

BLOOD CLOTTING MECHANISM: DESIGN REQUIRES A DESIGNER

BLOOD CLOTTING MECHANISM: DESIGN REQUIRES A DESIGNER

All of these factors are necessary, working together in the system at the same

time for blood clotting and clot removal to be effective.

Remove any one of these factors and the blood clotting mechanism fails to work.

The theory of this mechanism evolving incrementally was tested in lab mice by

systematically removing each gene responsible for each portion of the blood

clotting mechanism. The results are below:

Lacking Plasminogen

(unable to dissolve clots)

Lacking Fibrinogen

(unable to form clots)

Lacking Both

- Thrombosis

- Ulcers

- High mortality

- No clotting

- Hemorrhage

- Death in pregnancy

- No clotting

Why is it important to show things in biology are irreducibly complex?

If a complex design exists in nature that requires multiple parts working

together to be present at the same time, then it could not be done by

nature alone. It becomes evidence of intelligent design.

And design requires a designer.

Darwin wrote: “If it could be demonstrated that any complex organ

existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous,

successive, slight modifications, my theory would absolutely break

down.”

No evolutionary scenario can explain how any of these biological features

(some critical to the persistence of life itself) could come about gradually

as a result of a succession of small, random mutations.

IRREDUCIBLE COMPLEXITY

Specific attributes of the universe provide for and sustain life

Precision and accuracy of the protein and cell – the most basic elements of life

Existence of irreducibly complex systems that are vital to life

It is improbable that these things came about with such precision, all at the

same time, for life to exist.

These things had to be designed. And design requires a designer.

The great thing is you only have to provide ONE example of something

designed to require the existence of a designer
