ABSTRACTThe Summer Science Camps (SSC) Program supports

"Clark Atlanta UniversitySummer Science Camp'

Clark Atlanta University issponsoring a four-week Summer ScienceCamp for forty seventh and eighthgrade African American students eachsummer for the three year period,1992-1994. Program participants,selected from elementary and middleschools in Metropolitan Atlanta,enroll in an academic enrichmentexperience that . includesintezdisciplinary science, computerapplications, mathematics, andcommunication skills. Instructionemphasizes problem solving andcritical thinking while focusing onreal life situations. In addition toclassroom experiences, participantsinteract with research scientists intheir laboratories and in careerawareness seminars and discussiongroups. Weekly field trips round outthe academic experiences of theprogram. Follow-up activities duringthe academic year include workshopsaach semester for programparticipants and their parents, anawards program at the end of theschool year, and a mentoring programin which participants are matchedwith undergraduate or graduatestudent science majors who serve astheir mentors.

The Connecticut Pre-EngineeringProgram, Inc. (CPEP) Summer Programat Trinity College offers a five-weekprogram which integrates instructionin the sciences, mathematics,computer applications, guidance andcareer counseling and languagearts/study skills. Each year fortyunderrepresented minority risingeighth and ninth grade students takegrade appropriate courses and

participate on field trips. Theprogram employs a hands-on approachto mathematics and science education.Learning experiences are designed toinvolve students actively in scienceinquiry and mathematics as anintegral aspect of investigation.Professionals from the science,engineering and mathematics communityserve as role models and mentors.

'The Mathematics and Physics of

Water: A Summer Activities Camp"

Heritage College and SeattleUniversity jointly conduct a

four-week summer commuter/residentialmathematics and physics camp forethnic/racial minority girls enteringthe eighth grade, with follow-upactivities throughout the subsequentacademic year. The targetedpopulations are Native American andHispanic girls from the agriculturalToppenish area, and African-Americangirls from the urban neighborhoodsnear Seattle University. The program,which involves 50 participants eachsummer in the summers of 1992-1994,serves students who are able andwell-motivated but who might welllose interest in science andmathematics without specialattention. Activities include: 1)

small group daily interactiveactivities and experiments at eachcampus site on topics such as fluidflows, waves, and water quantity andquality, supplemented by field tripsand auest scientists, primarilywomen; and 2) field experiments at aresidential lakeside science camp.

Alaskans per year, is located in aremote site near Bethel, Alaska, inthe heart of the Yukon Delta NationalWildlife Refuge. This is an areawith a great need for the collectionof basic biological data. Studentswill be immersed in a variety ofresearch projects, collecting neededdata to answer existing questions.Program staff and the NativeElders-in-Residence will helpstimulate questions and provideinsight into the natural history ofthe area. Students will prepare afinal report of their research andwill also visit an actual fieldresearch station and assist withactivities there.

Eugenio Maria de Hostos CommunityCollege and Cornell UniversityCooperative Extension collaborativelydesigned this environmental summerscience camp in which fiftyAfrican-American and Hispanic ninthgrade students per year willparticipate in innovative,inquiry-based scientific projects andlearn about careers in science,engineering, and mathematics.Through hards-on laboratoryactivities, participants will learnabout the deterioration of theenvironment as it affects land, air,and water resources, and the role ofscientists and engineers inprotecting and reversing thisenvironmental damage. Utilizing NewYork City's natural resources as wellas its professional scientists,engineers, and mathematicians,students will also learn aboutscience from a socially responsibleand ethical perspective. TERRAbrings together practicingscientists, college faculty, and highschool teachers to challenge andmotivate minority ninth graders tostay in school, take additionalcourses in high school, and learnabout career opportunities in thesefields.

°Young Engineers & Scientists(Y.E.S.) Summer Science Camp°

The Y.E.S. Summer Science Camp is asix week commuter mathematics andscience program along with a

follow-up academic year program. Theprogram serves two hundred andtwenty-five seventh through ninthgrade African-American, Hispanic andNative-American students over a threeyear period. The objectives of theprogram are to: 1) introducestudents to science, engineering andmathematics concepts in a culturallyrelevant manner; 2) teach studentshow academic coursework relates totheir futures; 3) show students howscience, engineering and math relateto the world around them; and 4) helpparents become better informed andactively involved in the education oftheir children. The program involvesvolunteer scientists and engineersfrom local industry and San FranciscoState University. A novel,Fantastic Voyage, by Isaac Asimov,will provide the central theme forcamp activities which will include:field trips, visits with SEMprofessionals, hands -onexperimentation and exploration, andcomputer use.Built into the design are activitiesto encourage and enhance basicskills. Delaware Valley College's PREPInitiative is an enrichment programwhich will target average achievingseventh and eighth grade students whohave been traditionallyunderrepresented in the areas ofmathematics and sciences. 'Minority middle School SummerScience Programo

The primary objective of this projectis to stimulate minority MiddleSchool students to develop aninterest in and a facility forscience, and as a result, to choosescience as a career. A relatedsecondary objective is to stimulateMiddle School teachers toreinvigorate their teaching effortsin their home institutions.

To achieve these objectives, 50underrepresented minority studentsfrom major Indiana cities and eightof their teachers will be selectedfor a summer program on the WestLafayette campus of PurdueUniversity. The students will havefinished the 7th grade and must showpromise for achievement in scienceand mathematics. The program will beheld for four weeks, and willprogress through a three-year cycle,each successive year building on theprevious one. At the end of thecycle a new cohort of students willbe recruited. To replace those lostby attrition during a cycle, new

students will be recruited for the2nd and 3rd years from students whohave completed the 8th and 9thgrades, respectively. Parents willbe an integral part of the program;they will attend workshops at variouspoints of the program that focus ontheir role in helping their sons anddaughters to choose a career, and insustaining their educational efforts.

The summer program will use severalapproaches: (1) Inquiry-basedlecture/discussion/laboratoryexperiences that focus on interestingaspects of four areas of science:Biology, Chemistry, EarthAtmospheric Sciences, and Physics(one per week each year). Althoughthere will be no Mathematics orComputer Sciences per se, thesedisciplines will permeate the foursubjects chosen. These experiencesshould increase the students'knowledge of these areas, but moreimportantly, they should engender asense that doing science is a quest,rather than merely memorizing"facts." This point will be

reinforced by the middle schoolteachers of these students, as well,as they participate in the lectures,laboratories, and discussions; (2)

Opportunities for careers in sciencewill be identified during the daytimelecture/ laboratory/discussionsessions, and by visits to laboratieson and off campus. Careerexploration and evaluation will alsobe an important part of eveningsessions held in the dormitories,both with university staff and withrepresentatives from industry.Particular emphasis will be given topointing out the issue of

Miami University's minority summerscience camp, referred to as MiamiUniversity-Science EngineeringMathematics Program (MU-SEMP), iscarefully designed to build upon theexperience of its principalinvestigators, to extend the scopeand effectiveness of two majorprojects in Southwestern Ohio, and toprovide a holistic approach todeveloping in minority youth theknowledge and skills needed forentrance co and retention in thescientific and technologicalpipeline. The project's location!Oxford, Ohio) will allow it torecruit from the large concentrationsof minority, specifically African-American, youth in the Cincinnati andDayton metropolitan areas as well asfrom minority youth who are isolatedin rural schools surrounding thoseurban areas.

In order to reach its goal cfassisting people of color in becomingmore active members of the science,engineering, and mathematicspipeline, both as American citizensand as potential employees in relatedcareer fields, MU-SEMP will combineinquiry-based content courses inscience, mathematics, and computerscience with a supportive living andlearning environment for four weeks.Students will also attend fieldtrips, receive training in technicalwriting, sommunications, and researchand study skills. Guest speakers whowork in science, engineering, andmathematics careers will also providereflections from the real world.Furthermore, in order to assure thatthe supportive environment continuesafter the duration of the camp,parents as well as college students,college faculty, and middle and highschool teachers will be involved asstaff and mentors.

MU-SEMP will build upon and expandthe strengths of two systemicinitiatives in its geographical area.First, Ohio's Statewide SystemicInitiative is also located at Miami

University, and MU-SEMP will useteachers trained by Discovery as wellas adapt Discovery materials andcurricula. In addition, Discoveryteachers will have opportunities towork with MU-SEMV youth while bothgroups are in residence in thesummer. MU-SEMP staff have beeninvolved previously in developing andteaching Discovery courses. Second,Minorities in Mathematics, Science,and Engineering (M2SE), one of theregional Alliances for MinorityProgress centers is located inCincinnati.Recruitment, sensitivity,and retention techniques used in thatproject will be adapted for the youngteenagers who participate in thesummer science camp. Two of theproject's investigators have alsobeen trained by this program. In

summary, by combining rigorouseducation in science and mathematicswith a supportive, pleasant,residential environment, MU-SEmP willattract, motivate, and retain moreminority students in the educationpipeline.

The Summer Camp will offerinstruction in marine and aquaticscience, hands-on projects andinformation on career strateaies.Additionally, the proaram is designedto encourage the Junior Aquarists tocontinue their interest andinvolvement in the sciences beyondthe four weeks of Summer ScienceCamp.

As Junior Aquarists, participants areimmersed in an environment unseen bygeneral Aquarium Visitors -- the dayto day routines involved withmaintaining a world-classinst,tution. They go behind-the-scenes and interact withprofessionals in the field. Studentsgain hands-on experience workingalongside the Individuals who havechosen to pursue careers asaquarists, mammalogists,herpetologists and aviculturists.Students acquire an understanding ofthe secondary and undergraduateeducational requirements needed to

pursue various fields of study andhow "book learning" is applied to thereal world. Finally, JuniorAquarists "do science" by designing,carrying out and presenting to theirfamilies and friends, researchprojects using the National Aquariumin Baltimore's renowned collection ofpoison arrow frogs.

The program provides the foundationfor a lifelong interest in scienceand research as well as an extendedrelationship with the Aquarium.Following participation in the NSF-funded Summer Science Camp program,students can continue to meet on amonthly basis as part of an ongoingJunior Aquarist Club. Further,completion of the Junior Aquaristprogram Can be followed byparticipation in the High SchoolInternship Program and ultimately theHigh School Student Guide program.The latter carries high schoolstudents through the Aquarium'srigorous seven-week volunteertraining program, provides payingsummer jobs and culminates incertification as full-fledgedvolunteer exhibit guides. Whilestill in middle and high school,students can apply to the Henry HallScholarship Fund for additionalmarine science opportunities. The Math/Science Regional Center atSan Diego State University conducts athree-year Summer Science andTechnology experience to AdvanceResearch Skills (SSTARS) for 50

students entering 9th grade. The SanDiego County schools which arelocated in the South Bay and Skylineareas include representation fromeach of the predominantunderrepresented ethnic/racial groupsin those areas.

The project consists of two closelyrelated parts: a four-week summerresidential program on the San DiegoState University campus and anacademic year follow-up for selected

students. The summer session offersentering 9th graders an experimentalpre-aeometry class and a geometrycomputer lab, as well as aninterdisciplinary earth sciencecourse which integrates a workshcpsin career exploration and adolescentproblems. A technical writing classusing Hypercard allows students todocument their findings in innovativeand expressive ways.

All students participate in a

research project, as well as

environmental field trips whichsupplement the courses. Thisincludes a mentoring program in whichuniversity science faculty will workup to four hours weekly with smallgroups of students.

This camp will act as a feeder to thecollege bound programs as well asinitiate a consolidated andcoordinated effort to effect minorityparticipation in science and scienceeducation.

The goals set by this project are tosignificantly increase theparticipation and commitment ofminority students in the sciences,and to heighten the level ofawareness of students with potentialcareers in science and mathematics,including school teaching.

Fort7 eight minority students fromunderrepresented and disadvantagedgroups, who have completed their 7thand 8th grades, will be eligible toattend the camp. Recruitment will befrom the state of New Jersey, basedon "need" and interest in the fieldof science, mathematics andengineering.

The summer session of Camp PROMISEwill be the key component, andconsist of three inter-relatedcomponents: a) an enrichmentapprenticeship component, wherestudents will be dssigned asapprentices to faculty/scientists for

a week at a time; b) a remedialacademic component which will offerclasses in mathematics and English) acultural resident component whereparticipants will room and board oncampus during the week. The programwill operate weekdays only. Anacademic year component is included.

Portfolio assessment of students'progress using lab books, and otherdaily lesson plan data will beprimarily anecdotal and qualitative.However, evaluation will also includequantative assessment of studentachievement.

A broad range of participatoryactivities, not experienced in schoolclassrooms, will help bring the"wonder" of science and encouragestudents to select science courses athigh school. The ultimate aim is toinfluence minority students to makeacademic preparations in middle andhigh school so as to be able to makecareer choices in the are of science,engineering and mathematics.

The science disciplines will beintegrated with applied math conceptsand with activities requiringwriting, speaking, reading, andcomputer work. All three years willinclude fixploration of science,engineering and careers inpetroleum-based industries. Professionalscientists and engineers, Universityof Alaska Anchorage researchscientists, university students, highschool students, tribal traditionbearers and role models, and veteransummer science campers will serve asmentors and co-learners. And becauseNative cultures are grounded intradition, archeological sites,subsistence experiences, and the'Knowledge of elders will beInterwoven into each summer.Cultural heritage will play a majorrole in building self esteem andlinking tradition with the science,mengineering, and math careers oftomorrow.

Methods applied in the camp will becontextual, i.e., they will bepracticed and applied in the field.lab, and workplaces most central tothe future of the participants. Asstudents see, construct, andunderstand the connections betweentheir own lives and careers inscience, they will begin to believethat such careers are within theirreach. They will construct goals andplans to achieve such careers.

The goals of the Skill Summer ScienceCamp are to provide a foundation fora lifelong interest in science andmathematics for all participants andto encourage the consideration of SEMas possible career choices. The curriculum uses a hands-ondiscovery approach, collaborativelearning work groups andinterdisciplinary curriculum. Thedisciplinary focus is on"Mathematical Problem Solving inPhysics" and includes the followingactivities: 1) Basic Skills:Mathematical Problem Solving in

Physics; Computer Lab e ;Communications ; Math Applications ; 2)

Underrepresented minority7th -9th grade students from suburbanAtlanta (Cobb County and MariettaCity School Systems) will take partin this program. Project staff andseveral volunteers will coordinateactivities that include lectures andseminars, guest speakers, laboratorystudies, group research projects,career exploration, academicenrichment and field trips. Coursework will cover a range of SEMrelated courses, with an emphasis onthe application of those fields.Following the summer science camps,tutoring and mentoring will continuethroughout the academic year. Theeffectiveness of this program will bedetermined by the students' attitudesand behaviors toward science, successof the participants in scienceclasses and science fairs, andmajor/career selection in college.

This summer science camp, to beoperated by the East Bay Consortiumof Education Institutions, Inc., aninteragency collaboration of 19Oakland-area schools, colleges, anduniversities, will serve 50 Black andHispanic seventh- and eighth-graderswho attend seven schools in aseverely educationally andeconomically disadvantaged area ofSoutheast Oakland (CA) . The projectsite will be Merritt College (PeraltaColleges) . Learning experiences willbe offered for five weeks per summer,with 12 Saturday follow-up activitiesscheduled during the followingacademic year.

Classroom instruction will follow anintegrated, multidisciplinary,thematically organized model. Themeshave been chosen which highlightapplications of science andmathematics to events, issues, andpast-times of interest to the youngtarget population. These include theLoma Prieta earthquake and theaccompanying collapse of the NimitzFreeway, the recent Berkeley fire,issues related to pollution,development, and economic potentialof San Francisco Bay; the physics ofsports movement; and implications ofmathematics for strong and durableconstruction.

Each class section of 25 studentsill be under the care of aninstructional team composed of fullycredentialed teachers (qualified inboth mathematics and science), anupper division mathematics or sciencemajor planning to teach in the publicschools, and an older high schoolpeer mentor/role model. Theinstructional team will themselvesmodel appropriate individualresponsibility and cooperativeproblem solving.

Instruction will follow acceptedresearch practice. Participants willfirst observe phenomena and gatherdata. They will then analyze thisinformation in an effort to formexplanatory/ predictive hypothesefp.After testing their assumptions, t1.2ey

will fine-tune their hypotheses andshare their findings with others.

Classroom activities will besupplemented by field study/researchthroughout the greater Oakland area.A culminating event of each summersession will be a two and one-halfday ecological camping expedition atPinnacles National Monument, jointlysponsored by Naturalists at Large,who will provide onsite explanationsand guidance. Additional fieldexperiences will be offered inacademic-year follow-up sessions.

'Minority Family Workshop: WaterEcology Project'

The New Mexico Museum of NaturaiHistory and Science seeks to improvethe science literacy of NativeAmerican middle school studentsthrough an expansion of its

successful Water Ecology Project.This program takes Native Americanyoungsters and exposes them to hands-on activities to give them a morerealistic understanding of sciencecareers. To carry out this project,partnerships have been formed betweenthe Museum, governmental agencies andeducational institutions. Thesepartnerships have been designed toprovide middle school students with abroad exposure to science-basedcareers in New Mexico. Using waterquality monitoring as a theme unifiesall of the student activitiesassociated with this project. Waterquality, water conservation, and theecology of riparian areas are ofgreat concern to the aridsouthwestern U.S. This theme hasbeen chosen to facilitate the

involvement of whole families andrural communities in the program.The community and family supportproduced through the choice of thistheme is intended to reinforce thesnifts in student attitudes towardscience. Thus, thir. project is well-suited for Native American studentswhose sense of self is often stronglyinfluenced by fartily.
