INTRODUCTION

o

This analysis of Fall 1984'Credit Enrollment represents an attempt to under-4,

stand patterns of enrollment at Howard COnnunity College with respect to

demographic categories of students as well as registration status. For ex-

ample, the,Reseirch Office has tried to show how enrollment has changed iitt

various student population groups.

The, method.jf reportiqg enrollment has changed this fall, Non-itraditiooal

enrollment in post-secondary education Pas been increasing in recent years at

HCC and other institutions. Traditional methods of reporting include only the

"regular" semester. - which' means the official third-week statistics as

required by the Maryland State...Board for Community College Howard Community

Collegehasinstftutedadditional 'fall sessions each year. In Fall 1984,7"--there are three additional .fall 'sessions (year- sessions 8409, 8410 and 8411)

. ,

which amount 'to almost 30 FTE enrollments and 105- unduplicated headcount

enrollments. Jr

These additional fall sessions have been added to the Fail 1984 reported

credit enrollment. In order.to compare Fall 1984 to Fall 1983, the additional

sessions for Fall 1983 (year- sessions 8309, 8310 and 8311).have been backed in

by hand for put:poses of analysis.

O

A Summary of Findings and Recommendations follows immediately. Following the

summary are tables and graphs detailing enrollment changes.

SUMMARY OF FINDING$ AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Credit enrollments are down .for most categories. The most dramatic deelinesare in the foI lgwing, categories:

Part-time students.

Part-time and full-time females. This reverses the trend which0

id appeared list spring and in the preliminary enrollment analysis.

Part-time and full-time day students. This reverses the trend ob-served in the preliminary analysis (July 1984).

Recent Howatd Cottp high school graduates.

P

Returning students. (Readmitted studedt enrollments are up.)

Enrollment declines, as in Spring 1984, appear to be system -wide. throughoutMaryland coftinity colleges (see Appendix A).

Major fattors, as in Spring 1984, continue to be:

. Lower unemployment. a

OIncreased spending on consumer goods.

Other factors may be.:

New four-year institutions in 'Howard County and additicinal course0

Pfferings in those institutions.

OIndirect effects of new grading, policy - adults (particularly femaleswith other major responsibilities) may be less willing to ,pay for acourse with punitive grading.

Two new major changes are:

The decline in female enrollment' which aptually began last fall.0

The decline in recent Ho and C9Unty high school graduates attendingHoward Community College

The'decline in first-tim stuOjents.

Targeted recruitment activities ark recommended for the following groups:

o Non-returning females.

o Howard County high school students.

o Part-time non - returning students.

Continuing efforts to recruit non-returning males.'

'tc is supported by

There is some eiidence that spring and iummor redruitment activities have beensuccessful since readiitted student enrollments are up, from last fall.

Further investigation of. the relationship with financial aid per FTE isrecommended.

The. most dramatic decline is in absolute, numbers is 'the part-time femalecategory which shows a decline of 114 students (5.72%) from Fall. 1983.

Zhe decline in female enrollments began in Fall 1983. That decline-Was substantial (150 students or almost 6%) and was accompanied by a dropin the median age of females., particularly part -time Isolates. Thisindicates that it i s the nontraditional age females who are not.attending.

An 'increase in Fall 1983 Male. enroliments'of 1.27Z (16 students)didistot quite offset the decrease in female enrollments. However; sincefull-time enrollment increased, the PTE e*rollment did not decline inFall 1983.
