WORKS OF ARTThis quick art idea will give your stu-dents' imaginations a real workout! Cutout several pictures of people, animals,or objects from discarded magazines,making sure to trim each figure carefully.Then distribute two of these pictures toevery child in your class. Choose pairsthat appear as unrelated as possible,along with a sheet of plain, white draw-ing paper. Students are to paste the pic-tures to the paper in any positions theychoose, then use crayons to draw largerpictures incorporating them. Whencompleted, the magazine picturesshould blend into their createdsurroundings. PAM KLAWITTER

JOIN THE BOOK BLURBS!Looking for a way to boost your students'interest in reading? Try starting a "BookBlurb Club!" Nothing gets kids moreexcited than the chance to become amember of a special club. Introduce theclub by explaining that a book blurbusually appears on the front or insideof a book jacket and supplies informationabout the author along with a brief syn-opsis of the book. In other words, bookblurbs are meant to get potential readersinterested. Now explain that any childwho would like to join the Book BlurbClub must read at least five books andwrite a blurb for each one. (No copiedblurbs will be accepted!) After a childhas read the books and written the des-

ignated five blurbs, he or she will beawarded a special button that reads,"I've joined the book blurbs!" You canmake these buttons by laminating smalltagboard discs and printing on them withcolored markers. Then use heavy tapeto attach a safety pin to the back of eachone. You'll besurprised at how interestedyour students become in reading.

SILLY SENTENCESHere's a quick and easy language artsidea that doubles as an art project. Di-vide your class into two groups. Thefirst group should list five different sen-tence subjects while the second grouplists five different predicates. Circulatebetween the two groups, helping thekids expand their subjects and predicatesto form longer, more interesting phrases.For instance, the simple subject dogcould become a cold, shivering SaintBernard puppy with scraggly, wet fur.When the groups have finished their lists,ask a volunteer from the first group toprint one complete subject on the board;then have a student from the secondgroup finish the sentence with a com-plete predicate. Continue until all fivesentences have been printed on thechalkboard. Then let each child chooseone sentence to illustrate.

SYMMETRYWhen my fifth graders' first attempts atportrait drawing coincided with the in-troduction of symmetry in math class,it seemed only natural to bring the twodisciplines together. After all, what couldbe a better example of symmetry thanthe human body? So I instructed studentsto look through old magazines for frontalviews of faces. Then I divided the classinto pairs and gave each pair one halfof the same picture to work with. Thestudents glued their pictures to whitedrawing paper, then sketched in themissing half, attempting to match theshape of the head and facial features asclosely as possible. They also learnedto blend and shade a limited choice ofcrayon colors to achieve realistic skintones. When the drawings were com-pleted, we mounted them on dark con-struction paper and tzped them to ourclassroom walls. VIRGINIA BATEMAN

ACRONYM FUN"Scuba," as some of your students willbe able to tell you. stands for Self-Con-tained Underwater Breathing Apparatus.This acronym and others can lead to anenjoyable language arts activity. Havestudents describe themselves using theirnames as acronyms. (For example, Suebecomes Sweet, Underestimated, andEarly.) Now ask them to describe or de-fine a word as if it were an acronym.One of my students described "diet" as"Don't eat candy, Ice cream a no-no,Exclude soft drinks, and Tamalesno."

FLUENT FACTSHere's a great activity I use in my class-room whenever we've got some extratime to fill. I simply print the answer toa q,.,..2stion relating to a math, science,or social studies tact on my chalkboard,set an egg timer for five minutes, andinstruct my kids to think of as manyquestions as they can that might havethat answer. For instance, if the answeris George Washington, sorti, possiblequestions might be: Who was the firstpresident of the United States? What ta-mous person had a wife named Martha?Or, who Is as commander in chief duringthe American Revolution? When thetimer goes off, students must put theirpens down immediately and count thenumber of complete questions they'vewritten. The child with the greatestnumber of questions wins. Then thatstudent must read his or her questionsaloud for the rest of the class to check.If any of the questions don't match theanswer correctly, he or she is disqualifiedand the student with the next highestnumber of questions is designated thewinner.

COMPOUND CAPERSThe following activities will help yourstudents learn how to make compoundwords. (Stress that compound wordsmust make sense.)

Write some words on cones (invertedtriangles of construction paper) and someon round "scoops of ice cream." Pinthese up randomly on a bulletin board.Tell students to place ice cream scoopson correct cones to form compounds.

Now use a felt-tip marker to write haltof a compound word on one jelly beanand the other half on another. Mix allthe beans in a bowl. Instruct studentsto match up the candies by lining themup on a table. have them copy thecompound words on paper.

For a more active approach, draw anoutline for a hopscotch game. On each;quire write a word that can be usedto build a compound word. Each playermust add a word he or she thinks of tothe word on which he or she lands andthen say the compound word.

CREATIVE MAP COLLAGEIf you're looking for a way to culminateyour unit on modern American history,try this idea. Have students draw largeoutline maps of the United States; thenfill them in with magazine or newspaperpictures of contemporary Americanscenes. ILLUSTRATED ALPHABETSStudents can donate this illustrated al-phabet wall-hanging to a local hospital'spediatric ward. Firs;, cut one piece of28" by 49" white fabric into 7" squares.Each student practices illustrating an al-phabet letter on a 7" square of paperbefore duplicating the design on thefabric square with crayon. Design twomore squares, one to introduce youralphabet and one to be the last square.Iron fabric squares under waxed paperto keep crayon from smearing and thenmachine-stitch the blocks together. Us-ing a second piece of white fabric forbacking, place the alphabet and thisfabric right sides together. Sew threesides, turn right side out, then slip-stitchthe fourth side. BARBARA LASSMAN

ON THE LINEI used to display the letters of the al-phabet across th2 top of my chalk-boarduntil I realized that they wereplaced too high for my primary studentsto see! Now I print the letters on largetagboard squares and hang them on aclothesline, suspended between twocloset doors. After my class is familiarwith the letters, I scramble the cardsand let kids rearrange them in theirproper order. This reinforces visual dis-crimination in my students while intro-ducing them to manipulative activities.

CUBE GAMETwo wooden or plastic cubes and twominutes time can produce a math gamekids will love. With a permanent markerwrite the numerals 0 through 5 on thefaces of one cube and 0 plus 6 through10 on the other. The zeroon each cube helps establish an un-derstanding of the empty set.

FAT CATSHuggable hag cats are tun friends forprimary grade children. To make one,divide an ordinary lunch bag into a headand a body with a black crayon. Giveyour cat a charming personality by usingthe black crayon to outline features andcolored crayons to fill in details. (Mysecond graders spent 50 minutes makingtheir cats special.) While the bag is stillflat, glue scraps of yarn, paper feet, hats,and assorted details. To make your catfat, tear wads of newspapers and stuffuntil full Then staple the top.

BEACH BALLSInstead of the customary rectangularpaper to paint on, give children largecircular pieces of brown craft paper.Have them make beach balls out of thepaper by painting colorful stripes onthem. For variation, suggest paintingpizzas or chocolate chip cookies.

Arrange kids invarious shape formationsthree children to form a triangle, four to make asquare, and the entire class to form acircle. Try this cute idea to give your studentspractice in using the telephone directoryFirst, on a blank cassette tape recordfive mock requests for directory assis-tance. One sample request might be:"Operator, may I please have the phonenumber for John T. Smith on River Drivein Fairmont? The spelling is S-M-I-T-H.-Some of these requests should be forcommercial number, listed in the yellowpages.

Make sure you've left enough blanktape between each request for a siuoent"operator" to give his or her name andrespond, then place the recorder on atable or desk in your classroom alongwith the most recently published phonebook for your area. Now choose onechild to start the activity by playing thetape, looking up the requested phonenumbers, and taping the responses asif he or she was actually a telephroperator. For instance, a student mightreply. "That number is 255-2191" or,"I'm sorry, I show no listing for thatname in Fairmont." When the first stu-dent has responded to all five requests,he or she should make up five morerequests for the next child to answer,making sure to leave enough blank tapebetween each one for the response.Continue the activity until every childhas had a turn at the tape recorder.

PEANUT MOSAICFor a picture that is different, build apeanut mosaic. Draw a simple designon plywood. Each object or portion ofan object in the drawing must be fairlylarge, and lines should be light becausesmall portions of the plywood will showbetween peanuts.

Buy enough peanuts in the shell tocovet the board, one deep. Also buysome strong glue to fasten all the peanutsand a package of dye to color some ofthe peanuts in your design. Soak thesepeanuts in dye for several hours, thenremove and allow to dry.

Using glue, stick colored peanuts ontothe proper portion of the picture. Begenerous with glue, for you don't wantthe peanuts to fall off. When you firikh,glue on the natural-colored peanut she Isin the background.

A small rough rope makes an idealframe. Use thin nails with tiny heads sothat the rope will remain in position.

NEWSMAKERS GAMEWho's in the news this month? TheNewsmakers Game will challenge stu-dents to keep up with famous people.It can be changed regularly to suit class-room study.

If played by one person, the gamecan be self-checking. If two people play,each could check the other or a thirdperson could be selected as referee.

Make a gameboard with each squareindicating the occupation or accom-plishment a person has recently receivednews coverage for. In the center of thegameboard, list the famous persons'names. The player rolls a die and movesthat number of spaces on the board. Heor she reads the description in the square

and selects an answer. Someone consultsthe answer key. It the answer is correct,the player remains in that square. If in-correct, the player moves back to pre-vious position. If two people play, thefirst to finish is the winner. If one personis playing, he or she can play severaltimes, keeping track of how many n 3vesit takes to reach the finish each time.

After the game gets popular with yourclass, ask a few students to update itthemselves, using different names. Be-fore each gameboard is made, have stu-dents double-check the spelling of thepersons' names and show verification(a news clipping) that the person is in-deed a newsmaker.

GUIDE TO FAST FOODAfter I read the loc al paper's restaurantreviews to ryw students, mans of themreplied that their favorite places to eatweren't represented. So we set out toremedy the situation.

I assigned each student the task ofreporting on three difterent eating placesfor "The Class Restaurant Reviewer."Thes lotted down their comments aboutlocation, prices, food, service, and am-biance. We read our first drafts aloudin class, then polished the work to dis-tribute to other class and teachers. Asample review: "Farrell's is in the CrossCreek Mall. It has submarine sandwichesand a million different kinds of burgers.It's clean, not dirty. DEEP SEA MOBILESThese shimmering mobiles made fromsimple wire coat hangers would makea perfect accompaniment to a study ofthe ocean. Holding the handle of thec.)at hanger, pull the horizontal wiredownward, changing the triangularshape into a diamond. Cut blue cellophane torover the frame and tape into place.Now glue underwater scenes face downonto the blue water. PICK A POCKETMake this self-help tile folder to teachchildren ar`ipnyms, homonyms. andsynonyms. First, cut out six pocket-shaped pieces of construction paper.Draw on scallops and topstitching. Labeltwo with the word "Antonyms," two"Homonyms" and two "Synonyms."

Using different colors of paper, writeantonyms, homonyms, and synonymson separate strips of paper and insert inappropriate inside pockets. Prepare ananswer key that shows how words arematched and place it in an envelope orlong handmade pocket. Paste this in theinside front cover.

Children now can match words byclipping them together and transferringthem to the front-cover pockets. Afterthey're finished, they can check theiranswers against the answer key.

HOW-DE-DOAt the beginning o4 the school year, I

noticed that quite a few children in mlarge second grade class didn't knoweach others' names. To get them morequickly acquainted, I invented "How-de-do." I cut 54 narrow strips of paperand wrote each child's name on one ofthe strips. Every morning one childwould draw a slip, read the name onit, and then try to identify that person.If he or she couldn't do this, the personwhose name was drawn stood up andsaid, "How-de-do, I'm Alex Smith." Bythe end of the month most names wereknown, and some children also hadovercome their beginning-of-the-yearshyness. MARGARET CHIANIS

WATCH THEM GROWThere's no more revealing way of mea-suring growth and maturation of yourkindergarten students than by havingthem make self-portraits. At the begin-ning of the year, pass out drawing paperand crayons and ask children to drawpictures of themselves. Have them write(or try to write) their names on them.After they've been displayed, tuck thepictures in a folder. Around midyear,repeat the project. Finally, as the endof the year rolls around, try again. Trimand mount the three portraits in chro-nological order. REVOLUTIONARYTREASURE HUNTMy eighth graders' response to ms an-nouncement that we would begin tostudy the American Revolution was thatth:2y had studied it before, they knewall about it, it was spring, and let's dosomething else, So I devised a revolu-tionary war treasure hunt and startedthe students on a search for their owninformation on the war.

Each student was given a list of Rev-olution era "treasures" to find, such asrecipes, songs, or diaries. 1' , werealso presented with a folder so theirfindings could be kept neatly in class.Two class periods and evening assign.ment times were set aside for initial re-search and preparation. Then at thebeginning of every class for seven days,students were allowed time to presenttheir "treasures" in a show-and-tellformat.

Many students chose to copy colonialrecipes, and some cooked foodbis-cuits, dumplings and stew, corn breadand brought it to class. Others proudly

SMOKE SIGNALSBULLETIN BOARDBulletin boards are too often "kid pas-sive." That means they are neat andattractive, but not designed to activelyinvolve children in making or usingthem. This "smoke signals" bulletinboard is more than an eye-catching de-sign, because it requires that childrenbecome involved in using the board.

I use this display to present new spell-ing or vocabulary words by having stu-dents write one new word in each puttof smoke. I also send messages to mystudents wild-West fashion Dy writinghomework assignments or daily re-

minders in the smoke signals. You caneasily adapt this design to any gradelevel and to different lessons.

EARTH BALLOONSGive your students a creative geographylesson by building globes from balloons.To make these globes you will need largeblue balloons, string, different-coloredconstruction paper, glue, and felt pens.The balloons are blue to represent thatportion of the earth's surface that's cov-ered with ter.

First, blow up the balloon and tie itclosed. (Do this first in order to see howbig your earth will be so you can thenmake your continents to fit the scale ofthe globe.) Next, glue a piece of stringaround the middle of the balloon to mark'the equator. Small circles of string alsocan be glued at the top and bottom torepresent the North and South poles.The difficult and challenging part of thisproject is drawing, cutting, and fittingthe paper land masses. Encourage yourstudents to use different-colored con-struction paper for each continent. Thiswill help to create a beautiful and easy-to-use globe. Glue the continents in thecorrect positions. With a black felt pen,you can then label the continents andthe oceans. If you are working with largeballoons, you might draw in some spe-cific countries. GERTRUDE PARKER

LANGUAGE OF THE GAMEThe basketball season is just gettingunder way. The following topicalpoetry activities will heighten yourstudents' appreciation of languageand make the most of their interestin basketball.

First try the "rhyme fast break."Ask your students to write basketballterms that rhyme with fall, nibble,flunk, owl, grass, and toot. Thenhave them try to write a poem usingas many rhyming basketball termsas possible. Next, see which chil-dren will be part of the "alliterationall stars." Ask them to write allit-erative sentences such as "DoctorDunk dribbled through the Dukedefense." Start them off with namessuch as Jimmy Jump or Passing Pete.

Use team names for practice withmetaphor. For example: the DukeBlue Devils are one hot team thisseason, or the Utah Jazz started theseason on a sweet note with sixstraight victories. Finally, explainhow poets use onomatopoeia to de-scribe sound. Show them howsounds at a basketball game can hedescribed using this literary device.For example, the ball going throughthe net goes "swish." Children canmake a list of all the sounds theyhear at a big game.

"TIME CAPSULE" LETTERSAfter returning to school from ma-ternity leave, I gave my students(nine to ten years) a letter-writingassignment that turned out to be agreat experience. I asked each stu-dent to write a letter to my newbornson, telling him what life is like inthe early 1980s. I told the studentsthe letters would be put in Ryan'sbaby book for him to read when hewas nine or ten years old.

The students were delighted withthis assignment. Some of the con-temporary occurrences and facts thatthey wrote about were the SpaceShuttle Columbia, the Iranian hos-tage crisis, Reagan's presidency,major sports statistics, and currentprices of items from gasoline to fastfood.

a success that I have expanded theproject. Now whenever a studentin my class has a new sibling arrivein his or her family, we all write"time capsule" letters to the baby.When my students take these lettershome, they can feel as though theyhave added to all that is specialabout having a new baby in thehouse. WHAT'S A PALINDROME?Read it from right to left, and it willbe the same as when you read itfrom left to right. That's a palin-drome. "Huh?" you might ask. Youcatch on quickly. You just made apalindrome. Other single-wordpalindromes are pep, eye, pop,wow. Introduce this phenomenonto your students and challenge themto find palindromes on their own.

Writing phrases and sentences thatwork as palindromes is much moredifficult, but it can be done. "Wasit a bar or a bat I saw?" "No, it isopen on one position." "Too hot tohoot." A popular dictionary printsthis example: "Able was I ere I sawElba."

A few commercial names are pal-indromes. There is a city in Cali-fornia called Yreka. A merchantthere calls his shop Yreka Bakery.

DRESS UP A TURKEYI wanted a Thanksgiving art projectthat was not the usual turkey. Myidea was to have the class make aturkey and then dress it up. Studentsgreeted the first part of my assign-ment without great excitement. Theywere told to simply draw, color, andcut out a large turkey, using cc .1-struction paper. I then asked themto disguise their turkeys so a Pilgrimlooking for a Thanksgiving mealwould never recognize them. S thestudents put their turkeys into everymanner of costume. We ended up

I cut out a Pilgrim and we mountedhim, surrounded by disguised tur-keys, on the hallway wall outsideof our classroom. As a label for thedisplay, I cut out red constructionpaper letters to spell the question,"Have you seen a turkey?"

LOOPY THANKSGIVING TURKEYTo make this colorful turkey mobilefor Thanksgiving, you will need thefollowing materials: yellow yarn(one 12" piece and two 3" pieces)and nine paper strips (each 2"-3"wide). Different colored strips areneeded: brown for the body andhead; orange for the beak and tail;red for the wattle and tail; and yel-low, blue, and green to completethe tail. The five tail pieces shouldeach be 12" long. The two piecesfor the beak and wattle should eachbe 6" long. The brown head piece,12". And the brown strip for thebody, 18" long. The last things you'llneed are two large, white paper cir-cles for the turkey's eyes.

First, glue or staple the brownbody strip to make a large circle.When that is ready, begin to makethe tail pieces into loops. Each tail"feather" or loop can then be stapledor glued, as close together as pos-sible, on the body. Next, make aloop of the brown head piece ofpaper and attach it to the body acrossfrom the tail pieces.

You must decide at this pointwhich tail loop you wish to hangyour mobile from. You will thenknow where to attach the red wattleso it will hang below the head. Afterthat is attached, fold the beak pieceinto an accordion shape with fourfolds. Attach the two ends to thehead and you will have a squawking

turkey with an open beak. The nextstep is to color in large, black eye-balls on the white circles and gluethem to the head.

The yarn makes legs and feet. Tiethe small pieces to the long pieceof yarn, 1" up from each end, soyou have three strands or "feet" ateach end of the 12" piece. Whenyou hang your turkey from its tailfeather, the body will hang belowevery other loop. Drape the yellowyarn through the body loop and your"loopy" turkey will be ready tofly. CAROL Mc-ROBERTS

ALL THE NEWS THAT'S FIT TOCOLORHelp make students active and wisenewspaper readers with this activity.Each child will need his or her ownfront page of a newspaper and a

pack of crayons. Begin by identifyingand defining some basic newspaperelements on the page: headline,news story, photo, advertisement.With older students you can explainsubheads, datelines, and the differ-ence between local, national, andinternational news stories.

Next, have students decide onspecific colors to make each elementon the front page. At the top of thenewspaper page, make a corre-sponding color key. Finally, haveeach student color over each partof the front page with the appro-priately colored crayon. You canthen check to see if every child canidentify the different components ofa newspaper.

Encourage students to use manydifferent colors. Pin the finished frontpages around your classroom for acolorful, informative display.

Thevariations of this game are endless.You might change the name to Pol-lyanna and feature words with twoor more double letters (likes a tee-pee, not a tent, or likes Tennessee,not Virginia). How about Jean Earlywho favors a specific combinationof vowels (dream, not sleep, orbreak, not cheek).

This game makes a fun assignmentif you write P different letter or lettercombination on slips of paper andlet each child draw a slip to makecertain combinations. The game willchallenge students in writing, spell-ing, and creating rhyme.

CORRECTION CLUEHow do you make certain your stu-dents read over corrected papers youreturn to them? When my fourthgraders receive corrected papers,they know that somewhere on thepage they will find a smiling face.It will be tiny and partially hidden

HELP HANG THEWASHI use this clothesline bulletin hoardfor alphabetizing activities. First,draw the clothesline poles and somegrass. Draw and cut out a laundrybasket and, when fastening it to theboard, leave the top open to forma pocket. Use heavy string for theclothesline and have some smallplastic clothespins on hand to hangthe "wash" with.

Next, ask children to make somepaper "wash" items: clothing, lin-ens, and so on. Label each piececlearly. You can begin the activityby hanging some items yourself andasking the class to rearrange themon the line alphabetically. As skilldevelops, add more items to the ac-tivity, placing the unused pieces inthe open laundry basket.

We used dif-ferent shades of green for countries,states, and other land masses, andblue for bodies of water. To begin the poem "TheThree Little Kittens, I pull a mitten outof a pocket and tell the children thatsomeone must have lost it.

My one absolute rule about story-telling is to stop at the height of mylisteners' interest and enjoyment, notwhen they seem no longer interested.You may have a pocket or two left un-disclosed, but halting at the peak of in-terest insures that the response to thenext cape episode will be one of eageranticipation. Startby covering the board with blue paper.Then cut out some steep, snow-coveredhills from white paper and place themover the blue. Make a small sled andrider for each student and print the stu-dent's name on the sled. These sledscan be cut from different-colored sheets

construction paper. At the bottom of

the hiii place a sign showing the finishline for the race. The last step is to dividethe "race course" into four or five equalsections by drawing in some light pencillines across the hill. MAGNETIC FIELDS MADE VISIBLEWith a few difterent types ot magnets,some various metals, and some iron fil-ings, students can discover the mysterious lines of force that exist aroundever,. magnet. Most teachers know thefollowing procedure quite well. Firststudents place a magnet or magnets ona flat surface. Then they place a pieceot plain white paper above the magnetsand slowly sprinkle iron filings on thepaper over the magnets until the fullmagnetic field appears.

Usually, this magnetic field that thestudents create is only a temporary thing.At the end of the class the filings arereturned to their jar, and the magnetsare put away. With one more step tothe procedure, you can save the patternscreated by magnetic force. As soon asthe filings move into patterns aroundthe magnets, spray them with a clearacrylic spray that is sold in most art sup-ply stores. When the spray hardens, itfixes the filings to the paper so that theevidence of the magnetic fields is per-manent. I always make a display for ourhallway with these finished works ofmagnetic art. PLEASE TAKE A CARDWhen I am working with one child aloneor with a reading group, I ask the otherchildren not to interrupt me. This meansthat students spend a lot of unproductivetime standing in line wetting for me tofinish with others so I can then attendto their questions.

To help solve this problem, I put indexcards numbered 1 to 20 on a table nearmy desk. Now, when a child needs helpand I am busy, he or she takes a cardwith a number on it and returns to work.When I am tree, I call the numbers thatare missing and work with each childin order. I have noticed that often chil-dren will pick up a numbered card, goback to their seats to work on whateverproblem they have, and many times endup solving it themselves.

These numbered cards certainly helpkeep my classroom organized. They alsoseem to encourage students to give aproblem "one more try."
