This guide, the last in a set of nine, presents asummary of financial assistance available to students of medicine andrelated fields for obtaining a certificate, diploma, or degree afterStandard 10 at a university, college, or technikon located in SouthAfrica. The bursaries, loans, and other forms of financial aid appearunder the heading "Awards" and are arranged in alphabetical order andthen numbered. The book is divided into two main parts: "FirstDiplomas and Bachelor's Degrees"; and "Advanced Diplomas andPostgraduate Degrees." Under each main part are listed an index offields of study for which an award is available, a list of the awardsthemselves, and an index of the institutions where the awards areheld. Information concerning each award includes the numberavailable, its value, duration, eligibility, closing date forapplications, whether a service contract exists, and where furtherinformation about the award can be obtained. HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

The aim of this book is to provide a summary of financial assistance available for obtaininga certificate, diploma or degree after Standard 10 at a university, college or technikon. Thebursaries, loans and other forms of financial aid appear under the heading 'Awards' and arearranged in alphabetical order and then numbered.

The following suggestions will help you find information on the awards:

Awards are usually offered for a specific field of study and the irdex of fields ofstudy is a useful aid for tracing the awards. Look for the field of study in whichyou are interested and consult the numbers thereunder in order to locate the awards.

Also look under related fields of study. For example: for awards under'Chemistry', one can also look under 'Natural Sciences' and for 'Civil Engineering'under 'Engineering'.

Use the index of istitutions where awards are tenable in the same way as the indexof fields of study.

Apply for bursaries and loans in good time. The application form has to beobtained, completed and submitted before the closing date indicated under theaward.

Do not apply for bursaries and loans for which you are not eligible as bursarydonors usually adhere strictly to the conditions of the award.

Some organisations prefer not to make their bursaries widely known. This book istherefore not a complete account of all available financial assistance, but it doescontain nearly all the awards available. If you do not find an applicablebursary/loan in it your chances of finding such a bursary/loan in another source arepoor.

matriculant, means a person who intends to study at a university, technikon orcollege;

student, means a person who is already studying at a university, technikon orcollege;

matriculation examination, means the Matriculation Certificate examination or theSenior Certificate examination (matriculation exemption) equivalent examination;

any tertiary institution, means any university, technikon or college which offersthe course concerned and for which a Senior Certificate or equivalent is required;

any university or any university in the RSA, means that some of these awards arealso tenable for study abroad;

bursary, means that the award is made on the basis of academic achievement,financial need and other conditions;

scholarship or merit award, means that a person should nave excelledacademically to be eligible for this award:

bursary loan, means that the award usually includes a service contract which onbreach of contract becomes a loan, and

prize, means that the prize money should be used for further study.

Although the information in this publication has been compiled carefully, some of thebursaries and loans may not be valid. Applicants should thus ascertain whenapplying whether the award is still available. There may also be new awards whichthe HSRC is processing, details of which do not appear in this publication.
