Mrs. Kouroupos-White 2-309
Monday 10/24/16 Reading: 30-40 minutes of reading. Fill in your reading log. As you read this tonight, remember that before fiction readers begin reading a text they preview the book. As you get ready to read, preview the text and make predictions about how the story will go. Use the checklist on the side to help you preview your book.
Writing: Narrative Writing. Begin a new small moment piece or go back to an old story and begin revising it. Remember, your small moment story should focus on 1 moment that is stretched out across the pages. Some ideas are:
I scored the winning goal I fell off my bike I was afraid to go on the rollercoaster
Math: Short Response #1
Social Studies: Rural, Urban, and Suburban Communities. Read the article “People Live Together” and answer the following question: How do people decide where to start new community? Give examples from the text to support your answer.

Reading: 30-40 minutes of reading. We learned that authors have intentions when they write—they do things on purpose. As you read tonight, be on the lookout for powerful parts. Parts that make you think, laugh, give you a big feeling. Jot down any powerful parts you come across when reading and tell why that part was powerful.
Writing: Narrative Writing. Continue working on your small moment story. Make sure that you are sticking to your topic. Also, review your writing and make sure you are using details.

Thursday 10/27/16 Reading: 30-40 minutes of reading. We’ve learned that readers use many strategies at the same time when they get stuck on a word. Tonight, jot down any difficult words you found while reading and tell what strategy you used to help yourself. Some strategies are:
Using the whole page (pictures and words) Asking: Does this sound right? Does this make sense? Thinking: What has happened in the story so far?
Writing: Narrative Writing. Continue your small moment story. Remember that the right punctuation makes a story come to life. Reread your story and check for the best punctuation to make your story come to life.

People Live Together
Where People LiveWhen people start a new community, they first choose where to settle.
They may look at the geography of a place. Natural resources can affect where people start a community.
All people need food, water and shelter. A shelter is something that protects or covers. In some places, these things are hard to get. In dry deserts and rocky mountains, it is hard to find water or grow food. People may not choose to live there.
Other places have flat land and rich soil that are good for growing food. They have rivers for water and fish. Areas that have lots of natural resources might grow faster than areas that do not.
How People LiveClimate affects how people live. Climate is the kind of weather a place
has over a long time. Some people live in areas with cold winters. Builders there need to plan schools and other buildings to be warm in winter. Other people live in warm places. Buildings in those places might need to stay cool all year.
Places with cold climates may have indoor areas to play sports in winter. They might also have tunnels and skyways so that people can move
from place to place easily during blizzards. Buildings in places with strong storms must be sturdy enough to keep people safe.
