This February, WLIW brings you new programs that demonstrate the beauty and diversity of Long Island. First up, monthly series WLIW Arts Beat (Thurs. 2/6 at 7:30pm) debuts. Each episode will present a feature story about arts and culture on Long Island, supple-mented by segments from the tri-state area and across the nation. The premiere episode features a graffiti artist from Long Island; the current Broadway hit show “After Midnight;” an exclusive interview with “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston who is appearing in “All the Way” on Broadway; and a photography exhibit by singer Graham Nash.
Travel back to the turn of the 20th century in the new Treasures of New York: Gold Coast Mansions (Mon. 2/17 at 9:30pm) for a fascinating perspective on Long Island history. America’s captains of industry, such as Vanderbilt, Frick and Phipps, used their fortunes to build grand estates on Long Island’s North Shore, featuring architecture and landscapes designed by some of the era’s most prominent architects, artisans, and interior designers. Although many of these palatial homes are no longer standing, some estates have been restored and opened to the public, offering visitors the chance to journey back to the bygone eras featured in the classic novel, The Great Gatsby and in the hit PBS series Downton Abbey.
Later this month, Long Island Screening Room (Thurs. 2/27 at 10pm) premieres two new documentaries. Shellshocked: Saving Oysters to Save Ourselves explores the fragility of wild oysters and the fight to bring them back to New York Harbor, the former oyster capital of the world. Invisible Ocean: Plankton & Plastic follows sci-artist Mara Haseltine as she creates a sculpture that reflects how the microscopic ocean world affects all life on earth. Local filmmaker Emily Driscoll (pictured right) is also interviewed about her films.
Through these offerings, WLIW provides a variety of perspectives from which to view Long Island’s past, present and future.

The much-anticipated sixth season of hit British comedy-drama Doc Martin finally comes to American audiences. Martin Clunes reprises his role as Dr. Martin Ellingham, General Practitioner with a brusque bedside manner and phobia of blood, with eight new episodes for fans.
In the premiere episode, the idyllic town of Portwenn is buzzing with wedding arrangements for the wedding of Doc and Louisa, but will they finally tie the knot?
