This method statement identifies the general steps, arrangements and precautions which should be followed for excavation. Earthworks consist of all cleaning, grubbing, removing existing structures and old pavement, removing unsuitable material, excavating the pit for borrowed material if needed, structural excavation, and all other works that are required to construct and maintain the buildings and the facilities as per the approved design drawings and contract specifications. For trenching and backfilling works, refer to the method statement prepared for this purpose.

2- Soil Information and Boreholes:

The geotechnical subsurface soil investigation report should be reviewed prior starting earthworks on site. Boreholes profiles should be studied to identify the type of soil and the different soil strata in the area of work as well as the water table. The excavation should achieve the recommended foundation level and take into consideration the backfilling with borrowed material if recommended by the geotechnical report. In case any cavities are encountered during excavation, works should be continued until sound soil is reached.

3- Dewatering:

In case of water table is found close to the foundation level, a dewatering system should be studied and submitted to consultant for approval. The system should be maintained operational as per the dewatering report recommendations. All precautions should be taken to ensure efficient dewatering system that has no negative effects on the adjacent environment.

4- Protection and Deviation of Existing Utilities:

When the work is conducted close to inhabitant areas, there will be a possibility of existing utilities in the area of work. Attention should be given to excavation work not to damage working utilities, investigation pits shall be used for this purpose in case of absence of utilities maps. A plan of protection and deviation, if necessary, of existing utilities should be submitted to Consultant for approval prior the commencement of excavation works.
