Do you want to hunt for treasure righthere in Yankton?
With more than 200 geocaching locationsin the area, you can do just that.
Geocaching is a free, worldwide outdoorrecreational activity in which players hide andseek containers through the use of GPS de-vices. Known as “geocaches” or “caches,” thecontainers hold logbooks to document theirhistory, as well as items for trading.
Geocaching is open to all ages, and all any-one needs to participate is a GPS or a GPS appon a smartphone.
“Anyone can do it, and it’s somethingeveryone should try,” said Shirley Dangler, alocal geocaching enthusiast who helps coordi-nate Yankton’s annual spring caching event.
To play, visit the geocaching website atwww.geocaching.com and register for a freebasic membership. On the “Hide & Seek aCache” page, enter the postal code you wish tosearch for geocaches, and choose one of the re-sults. Enter the provided coordinates into theGPS device, and begin the adventure.
Caches are hidden in a variety of locationsand are often placed at locations of great natu-ral beauty or personal importance. Since somecache finds can be technical and physicallychallenging, it is important to note the descrip-tions and difficulty ratings before starting.
While many people choose to geocache inwarmer weather, Dangler said many caches can
be found year-round.“I’ve tracked through knee-deep snow,”
she said. “It’s just up to the individual whenthey choose to do it.”
Caches come in numerous shapes andsizes, Dangler said, and can be just largeenough to hold the paper log, or as big as largeTupperware containers.
“They will have SWAG — stuff we all get. That can be anything from keychains to pens totoys for the kids,” she said. “The idea is that ifyou take something out, you put somethingback of equal value.”
Geocaches may also contain trackableitems, which are moved from cache to cache.Players log the items’ travels so that others cansee where those items have been. Trackablesare most often trackable tags or coins, butsome cache hiders get more creative, Danglersaid.
“I’ve seen where people have put out littleHot Wheels cars,” she said. “They’ll put outthree or four of them in a race, and they wantto see which car can visit the most caches andtravel the most.”
Dangler added that while geocaching isknown as a treasure-hunting activity, the truetreasure is not inside the caches, but in the ad-venture itself.
“It’s about the fun and self-satisfaction youget from finding them,” she said.
