Franz Marc

Born in Germany, ( 1880 – 1916 ) When he was young he wanted to

become a priest. Then he decided to study philosophy and changed his mind again to become an artist.

He started a famous art group called The Blue Rider. They were a group of artists who painted abstract expressionist paintings.

The Blue Riders believed that colors, shapes and forms connected with sounds and music, and tried to create colors that could express emotion.

His favorite subjects were animals and painted them in bright colors.

The colors he painted had meaning and emotion. The three primary colors red, yellow, and blue were had meaning in his art, blue meant masculine and spiritual, red meant violence, and yellow was feminine, joyful and happy.

Marc volunteered to join the German military and died in action in World War I at the age of only 36.
