Welcome... to the latest edition of Community Voice!Front Cover Quiz: Spot The Local Landmark...How many of you can spot the landmark from our surrounding area featured on this October issue front cover? If you think you know the answer please send your entry to Graham Tyers at The Voice, c/o 57 High Street, Ibstock, or email him at: [email protected] The winner (drawn first out of the hat of all correct entries) will receive a “Full English” for two at The Old School Tearooms, High Street, Ibstock. Good luck!

Last month’s front cover quiz answer... and NO Winner!Oh dear! It appears that we made last month’s landmark too tricky as we had NO correct answers at all! The closest was our old friend, Stuart Bains who guessed that it was situated on Jeffcoates Lane Swannington. In fact, it is the Bell Pit Wheel located at Hough Windmill, Swannington.

Let’s hope this month’s doesn’t prove as difficult.

New Addition to the FamilyThe Community Voice is expanding! From October, we are launching a second publication covering the villages of Whitwick, Thringstone and Swannington. We hope to emulate the success of the Ibstock ‘Voice’ and become an important reference for local events, news and businesses using the same tried and tested format. Many thanks to all of our advertisers who have supported us with the new magazine. And a special thanks to Whitwick Parish Council for all of their support.

Aimed at our younger readers, here’s the second in our series of short stories by author Rachel Greaves, told in rhyme about the adventures of an inquisitive Airedale, Ruffle and his escapades on a steam railway. The full range of these charming story and colouring books can be seen by visiting www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk or emailing [email protected]

So over they went to the blackberry patch,

Taking care that the brambles didn’t scratch.

Then stopped and looked on in disbelief,

Who’d taken the berries, who was the thief?

Ruffle goes fruit picking

A large green train at the station did stand,

Driver Ben leaned out, a bag in his hand.

‘Eric! Look what I have got for our tea,

Apples! To put in a pie for you and me!’

I know what else we can add, Eric thought,

‘I’ve some juicy blackberries – the ripest we‘ll sort.’

Ripe blackberries – mmm! thought Ben with a sigh,

Would make it such a delicious fruit pie!

Where berries should hang a metre from the ground,

Chewed empty stalks were instead to be found.

Eric’s and Ben’s faces both turned to a frown,

On the rows of missing fruit they looked up and down.

From out of the bushes Ruffle suddenly appeared.

No surely not him Ben and Eric then feared.

For there was the thief of the Blackberry Bush,

Stuck to Ruffle’s beard was a deep purple mush!Jeff Fowkes Wheels ltd

Sew Me-Me expand into a larger size! With a deep passion for dressmaking, craft work and design it was perhaps obvious that local girl, Donna Jackson would one day open her own shop.

In February 2015 she decided to take the plunge and opened for business in a tiny shop in Bakery Court, Ashby De La Zouch. From here she sold a wide range of fabrics appealing to both dressmakers and quilters and also produced her own range of children’s clothes.

Right from the start her products proved to be very popular and soon it was obvious that the original shop would prove be too small, especially as Donna wanted to expand into other areas. In May 2016 Donna moved the business just next door to No 4 Bakery Court and already the signs are that this was just what the business required.

In the much larger downstairs shop Donna still offers a wide range fabrics, complemented with dress-making and quilting accessories. She also makes her own range of children’s clothes for both boys and girls, which are available in sizes from newborn to 10 years old. The clothes are made with fabrics that are sourced from around the world and customers can choose from Donna’s own extensive range of designs. Needless to say, friendly advice is always on offer from Donna who is always pleased to offer help and guidance.

Coming soon in the room upstairs, will be a fully fitted workshop where tuition on the art of dress making and quilting will be available. Budding crafters and dressmakers will be able to produce their own creations with the advantage of guidance from Donna.

Judging from the response of existing customers, this unique business is going to be a roaring success and we look forward to following their progress over the coming months.

come and meet Ruffle in person!Local author Rachel Greaves will be appearing in person along with her delightful lifelike puppet of Ruffle at The Palace Arts Centre Ibstock, on Saturday 26th November from 10am to 12pm.

Great experience for the kiddies and also great chance to purchase special offers and have your books signed by the author herself.

Sporting Dynamo Football ClubSporting Dynamo Football Club was founded in Ibstock in 1998 by local greyhound trainer Jim Watts. In the club’s 18 year history they have gone from strength to strength and now boast one of the most successful Sunday football clubs in Leicestershire.

GEMS Charity was founded in June 2012 by Sally & Andy Anderson, after they had accompanied four close friends on weekly visits to the Osbourne Chemotherapy Suite at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Inspired by the hard work and dedication of the nurses, the potentially lifesaving procedures that happened in the suite and the courage of our four friends and other patients made us feel we wanted to give something back. Although GEMS Charity cannot undo the experience the patients are going through, we hope to make the environment for the patients and their supporters more comfortable during their treatment.

The Oncology Unit treats hundreds of people every day, with all types of cancer and it relies heavily on the generous donations and help from the public. GEMS Charity is run solely by volunteers and all funds raised goes directly to the suite. The name of our charity is made up from the initials of those four close friends: Gill, Elizabeth, Meg and Sarah.

SDFC play in the Hinckley Sunday League where their young squad of players are beginning to make a real name for themselves, winning the Senior Cup in 2015 and managing to retain it in 2016. They also added their first Premier League title last season.

Comprised of nearly all Ibstock lads and under the management team of Roger Goddard and Kevin Talbot, Dynamo are already off to a great start this season and also have a very competitive reserve team playing in division one.

But the thing that the club are most proud of is the fact that they also do a lot of charity work and their now legendary ANNUAL BIKE RIDE (sponsored by Sunshine Takeaway) has now raised well over £2000 for different charities which include Cancer Research and the Alzhiemer’s Society.

The average for a Sunday Football club to last is 5 years so that fact we’ve been running for 18 shows the effort

and determination of our committee members, players, staff and supporters.

We have too many people to name individually for their help but can only say how grateful we are to the local community for helping us on our way.

Also anyone looking to sponsor/advertise their company please get in contact.

SDFC play all home games at Ibstock Welfare on a Sunday morning 10.30am ko

and would love to see even more down there to add to our already great support.

I’m sure there will be lots of people reading this wanting to know how they can get involved with the club or maybe even interested in playing, please contact us if that’s the case.

Gareth and Shirley McGuire have run Powerpac Ltd for over 9 years. Concentrating on renewable energy for the home and business and winning awards along the way.

When Gareth started Powerpac Ltd in 2007 he brought with him a wealth of experience and a desire to create an electrical contract business with the ethos of maximising the use of renewable technology solutions to make a significant contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gases.

After spending some time getting the company on a firm footing he began to look at ways to branch out into areas that would encapsulate the company ethos. With this in mind he looked into installing solar panels to residential, commercial and agricultural premises. At this point he was joined in the business by his wife, Shirley to help with the sales and administration side of things.

The company completed the first PV install in July 2010 and the feedback from the customer was very positive and spurred Gareth to believe that this was the direction that he wanted the company to go in.

Though things started slowly at first it soon took off and, to date, Powerpac have completed hundreds of solar installs all over the country.

With the steady rise in electric and plug-In hybrid vehicles, Powerpac began to receive enquiries from people to have a charging station installed at their home or business. This fell nicely into the company ethos and added another arm to the company.

Both Gareth and Shirley envisage a bright future for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles within the country and with that there will be an increase of people wanting to charge their cars quickly.

The standard leads that comes as standard with the car will charge efficiently but will take, typically, around 8 hours to reach full charge. Whereas a properly fitted charging station, should reduce that to about 3 hours. There are even fast boost chargers that can charge the car to around 80% within 30 minutes.

Gareth says, “The research that is currently going into this technology is moving at a rapid rate, but the infrastructure will not change. Plug-in cars have batteries, those batteries need charging and people want to do it quickly and cost effectively.”

Currently there is a government grant available for getting a charging station installed at your home and they are looking at the possibility of extending this to the business sector.

If you have, or are thinking of getting, a plug-in vehicle in the future, or want to know what renewables can do for you and would like some advice, then where better than a good local company that has embraced the technology and winning awards in the process, Powerpac of Whitwick. Call them on 01530 835 859.

IBSTOCK PALACE CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL

The Palace Community Centre is run by volunteers. Without our volunteers, events would not take place - and it is fantastic that so many people are willing to give their time and energy on a purely voluntary basis.Becoming a Palace volunteer is hugely rewarding and great fun. People can volunteer to help in many ways. We have volunteers who help behind the bar, volunteers who collect glasses during an event, volunteers who make the teas and coffees, volunteers who help at our regular Palace ‘Community Mornings’ and volunteers get involved at our regular film nights.

There are many different ways that people can become involved with the Palace and we are always looking to recruit new volunteers. You do not need any prior experience, just plenty of enthusiasm.

If you would like to become a Palace volunteer or would like to know more about what being a volunteer entails, please give Gary a call on Tel: 01530 262400. We look forward to welcoming you on to our friendly team.

Looking for a rewarding hobby? Why not become a Palace volunteer?

locals concern over proposed changes at local pub & restaurantRegular customers at the well-known hostelry The Belper Arms in Newton Burgoland have become increasingly concerned over proposed changes and modernisation to the building.

The Belper Arms is reputed to be the oldest pub in Leicestershire dating back to 1290 and around that time it was known as ‘The Shepherd & Shepherdess’. It still retains a lot of the original features but despite this, the pub is not a listed building so does not benefit from the protection that listing would normally bring with it. Because of this, the regulars are extremely concerned that what they see as an iconic and important building could be spoiled by unsympathetic alterations and are looking for assurances from the owners.

We contacted Historic England who confirmed that whilst the building is not listed, anyone can apply for the building to be listed and this would be considered by them.

The Community Voice did contact Punch Taverns, the owners of the Belper, and we received the following assurance. “We are spending £87,000 investing in The Belper Arms, however the pub will still keep it’s traditional features. We are making small improvements to make the pub a friendly and welcoming place for it’s customers to visit”.

From this statement the locals appear to have their assurances from the owners, although many seem unconvinced and say they will await the developments over the coming weeks to see if the owners are true to their word!

Swepstone Big Switch on!On 27th November, Advent Sunday, we are holding the Big Switch On of the Christmas Stars at Swepstone Church at 5pm. There will be a raffle to determine who will switch them on this year, which will be drawn on 6th November. Even if you may not want to switch them on yourself you may have a friend, child or family member who would enjoy being this year’s Switcher On. Tickets are now available from Brenda Sumner at £5 a ticket. All proceeds will go to Swepstone Church.

On the day hot mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies will be provided. We’ll sing a couple of Christmas carols; hopefully the bells will be rung and the stars will light up. The doors will then be opened to reveal the church decorated with Christmas trees. We’re hoping this will be a magical event. The Christmas Tree Festival will then be open the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 2nd, 3rd and 4th December from 10.30am until 4.30pm. Refreshments will be available in church on these days.

If you would like to help in any way, by decorating a tree, helping serve refreshments, meeting and greeting in church, running a

stall, making mince pies or cakes or giving prizes for the tombola then please contact Brenda 01530 270367 or email [email protected]

Even if you can’t help, then please just come along and bring your family and friends.

Ibstock Bowling Club on Leicester Road was originally started in 1929 by four men, Charles Smith, Jack Spiller, Bert Foster and George Godfrey, who opened the club at the Miners Welfare (the Wellie). The original building was a much smaller version of that which we see today with a Council person employed to take monies for the hire of facilities and equipment. Later the pavilion was extended and used for many social occasions, with a piano and a kitchen where one could prepare food or hot drinks. Separate changing rooms with lockers were provided for tennis players and bowlers both and the area had three tennis courts, a putting green and a bowling green surrounded by beautiful flower beds. For the children there was a playing field with a large area set aside for swings, a roundabout, rocking horse, mountain glide, see-saw and swing boats.

In the early years only men were allowed on the green and they had to be correctly dressed, behave in a gentlemanly manner with no bad language. The ladies were responsible for putting on teas and grace was sung before every meal. Club games and competitions plus several cup games meant that the green was full most evenings.

Many of those traditions have been lost over the years but whereas back then the membership was mostly of middle and upper class men, today everyone is welcome and ladies now play in mixed teams alongside the men.

In the 1970s the club changed from council to private maintenance and the moving of the then cricket pavilion to its present position as the bowls clubrooms and the paving of the surrounds was carried out by a small group of retired miners and members of the club. Improvements to the green have been ongoing and the maintenance of the green and surrounds is carried out with a lot of love and care by a core of dedicated members without whom the club would find it hard to carry on.

Ibstock Town Bowling club is a great place to be and is keen to attract new members who will be given any help necessary to learn the game and annual subscriptions are very reasonable. Bowling is a family game and many families have grandparents, parents and children members of the same clubs. Ibstock Bowls Club’s own Katie Smith age 23 years, has played for England under 25’s for the last five seasons and won Bowls International Young Women Bowler of the year in 2015. Her Great Grandfather (one of the founding members), Grandfather, Grandmother and Father were all members of the club. Younger members have a great playing future in the game, so come on all you potential bowlers and get involved with your local club – after all, ‘you will never, never know if you never, never go’.

Although the weather was a little against us we have never let that spoil the day have we? We were of course delighted with the variety and volume of entries although the seasonal weather seems to have taken its toll on the growing of certain items, and of course the support the show received yet again was greatly appreciated.

Thank you again to our sponsors, Judges and all of those who offered support and that made it such a great success, all exhibits

were of a very high standard and this was commented on by the judges who were suitably impressed by it all. The Children’s section was again quite exceptional and improves year on year, well done Kids...

The Auction was yet again a huge success thanks to the incomparable Chris Miles who never ceases to amaze, combined with humour and commitment and flare saw out the day out in its usual way.

The committee already has its sights firmly set on next year’s “75th” Anniversary of the PHS Show, this will of course be a mile stone in the history of the society, as such, this will be marked in classic style and certainly be

one to remember, a great festive and fun day out for the whole family. Details of this will be published nearer the time.

In order to meet the deadline for this publication the amount raised on the day is not yet available, however, donations will be made to chosen charities as it has always been.

Once again, the committee would like to take this opportunity to say a massive and heartfelt thank you to all of you for your hard work, support and undying loyalty to this superb event year after year, its success is down to you all and without you it wouldn’t be possible.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS FOR THE WHIMSEYAs regular readers of the ‘Community Voice’ will know, back in February this year The Whimsey Inn, Ibstock underwent a complete refurbishment which transformed this popular venue from just a pub into a stylish new pub/restaurant.

This has proved to be a great success and the new owners Graham Ridgeway and Glen Statham are determined to build on this and make The Whimsey a ‘go to’ place for first class food and drink.

The menu will continue to offer a varied and excellent range of quality food at great prices and Graham and Glen, along with new managers Amie and Deb, are keen to ensure that the standard will be high so that the reputation of The Whimsy spreads throughout the area. They will continue with their Sunday roast menu, but as before pre-booking is advisable to avoid disappointment.

Glen, in particular is passionate about the quality of the beer served at The Whimsy and is most keen to build on it’s reputation for serving excellent beers and ales. They already have a great reputation for their other business, ‘The Jubilee’ in Newbold Verdon, and are determined that this will continue at The Whimsey.

Traditional attractions have not been ignored with live entertainment and events taking place over the coming months and on 29th October popular singer and entertainer Dean Dallison will be appearing - so make a note in your diary to see this great performer.

The Whimsey still has a free pool table available, runs its own pool team and is looking to maintain and extend its dart team to both ladies and gents.

Graham and Glen have other plans for the business which they will be outlining over the coming months so watch this space for details.

With a free car park nearby and a marvellous central position in the village, access could not be easier so look forward to seeing you in the near future!

Season update from the 1620s House and Garden at Donington le HeathLeicestershire County Council’s 1620s House and Garden has now finished its first season in its new guise. The house opened in late May following an extensive refurbishment to create a fully furnished family home from the early 17th century.

Visitors have really enjoyed the beautiful gardens and learning about the many plants and their uses as well as getting hands on inside the fully furnished 17th century rooms.

The tea room staff have supplied a wonderful range of high quality home baked cakes along with filled rolls and a range of drinks in the old barn.

Out team of volunteer gardeners and house interpreters has grown over the season, but there are still opportunities for more people to get involved at this wonderful site. We are also looking for volunteers to help with our learning activities at the site.

During the winter the house will not be dormant, with the volunteers undertaking development work in the gardens and inside the house ready for the new season which starts on April 1st.

Winter family events include:

‘Apple Day’ on Saturday 22nd October 11am – 3pm to celebrate the gardens and heritage orchard on site.

Gunpowder, Treason and Plot on Sunday 6th November, as the house was owned by the family of one of the Plotters.

For more information on the house and our activities and to see next season’s event programme as it develops, visit www.doningtonleheath.org.uk or follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DoningtonleHeath

You can order online at www.nwleics.gov.uk/freetreescheme2016. The deadline for applications is 24 October. Trees will be available for collection on Sunday 20 November.

The overwhelmingly popular Free Tree Scheme is back again and you can help to continue its success by supporting it this year. The scheme has already seen thousands of trees planted across the district and the district council is once again teaming up with the National Forest Company to make our district even greener.

There are four trees to choose from below and again this year we have the Hedge Fund with residents able to order up to 30 metres of hedging.

Holly (Ilex aquifolium) The common holly grows as a shrub or tree and has a narrow, conical crown and smooth silver-greyish bark. It has bright red berries (found only on female plants) and shiny evergreen leaves. The dark green holly leaves are spiny and have a waxy texture. Holly is evergreen so its leaves remain green all year round.

Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) It has attractive, grey-green variegated leaves in summer. In autumn its leaves turn reddish-orange before they drop. Flowers are followed by white, often blue-tinged fruit. In winter its bright-red stems bring a welcome dash of colour. Fully hardy, it prefers full sun to partial shade in moderately fertile soil.

Field Maple (Acer campestre)A medium-sized native tree with a bushy, rounded head which can grow 15m (50ft) tall in good conditions though often stays smaller. The small leaves are of typical maple shape, though more rounded than some in the Acer family. The autumn colour is a striking butter-yellow, and is one of the best from trees native to the British Isles. When young, bark has a curious cork-like appearance though as the tree matures this disappears.

Elder (Sambucus nigra)It has very finely cut, almost black foliage, which is the perfect foil to the pink-flushed blooms. It will grow almost anywhere, including difficult conditions such as waterlogged or very chalky ground. In autumn, leaves turn rich red.

Grab a tree for free 2016in the National Forest and beyond

The Hedge Fund this year is Hawthorn and Hazel mix with a Field Maple at 10 metre intervalsHawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)A fast growing, deciduous hedging plant. It heralds the arrival of spring, hasan abundant and spectacular display of white scented blossom and it develops glossy red haws in autumn. It grows to 15 metres but it can be trimmed after flowering or in the autumn to keep it smaller.
