B. Sources of Salt1. Dissolved

materials come from several sources

2. Volcanoes add gases, especially chlorine

3. Erosion adds dissolved salts

4. Rain erodes minerals5. Rivers carry them into

ocean

C. Salinity varies1. It is lower where rivers flow into

oceansa. Large rivers like the Mississippi and the

Amazon have the biggest effectb. Lots of freshwater dilutes the salt

water.

2. Area with lots of evaporation & little precipitation makes the water have higher salinity

3. In polar regions: more precipitation than evaporation – lower salinity

4. In equator regions: evaporation = precipitaiton

D. Ocean Temperature1. Sun supplies the heat2. Water temperature is

highest at surface3. Waves mixes surface water

transfer heat downward4. Region where heat is

mixed is called the surface zone

a. In surface zone temperature is fairly constant warm

b. Surface zone varies in depth
