INM How do we look at a character? We look HOW the author develops or reveals the personality of the character, not just WHO they are. (think about WHAT makes you who you are, not just who you are) Characterization – the depiction of personality in literature (how a character’s personality is revealed)
Character foil – a persona that serves a specific purpose in a narrative, such as to be a sounding board for the protagonist (called a confidante), or to point out the flaws in the character’s plans, etc.
Protagonist – the main character of a narrative whose desires and goals drive the plot of a narrative.
Antagonist – the source of opposition to the protagonist’s desire, i.e. the person or situation opposing the protagonist
Conflict – the tension between the desire of the protagonist and the opposing force of the antagonist(s)
Countertrait – a character trait that deviates from or contradicts a character’s distinguishing character trait(s), rendering the character complex and therefore less predictable.
Nomenclature – the names and titles an author gives his or her characters.
