& Christians lived in peace in Palestine. Late 1000s, Turkish Muslims

captured Jerusalem & attacked Christian pilgrims.

1096- 1st Crusaders were peasants, slaughtered 1099- Knights defeated Muslims & took over

Jerusalem, set up 4 small kingdoms to trade with Europe. 50 years later Muslims took back Jerusalem

2nd, 3rd, & 4th Crusades 1147- 2nd Crusade embarrassing Christian loss 1189- 3rd Crusade King Richard I “Lion Heart”

fought Saladin unsuccessful 1201- 4th Crusade- Knights destroyed Venice &

Constantinople
