Columbus Output Management 3 Day Implementer CourseAims The Columbus OM (COM) suite of products is highly configurable and can be implemented in an infinite number of ways. This 3 day course is designed for technical IT staff that will be required to design and implement COM solutions. Whilst this course is based on the more common implementation and configuration options, there will be opportunities for delegates to discuss sitespecific configurations. The course is based on formal training notes and, wherever possible, presentations are supported by demonstrations and practical exercises.

Objectives On successful completion of the course, delegates will be able to: Design an outline COM solutions Install an example COM instance on a training systems Configure & test sample printer configurations from the Command line and the COM explorer interface Configure a COM distributed printing environment Undertake second line problem investigation tasks Communicate effectively with other Columbus OM Administration, Implementation and Support Staff

How to use this training book?Structure This training book is divided into chapters. Each chapter is designed to follow the order as outlined within the course agenda.

Subject pages are normally comprised of A slide and a blank zone for your notes, Glossary In addition to the definitions given throughout the course, a glossary is used to explain frequently used terms

For further information Please refer to the published documentation for Columbus OM.

Queue structure COM assigns a number (the UID) to each entry Range of numbers can be configured When COM reaches the highest number, it starts again. It ensures that every entry in the instance has a different number. It does not re-use a number if original number is still in the queue.

Two or more instances can be set to different ranges The pending queue and completed queues can be indexed improves performance of accessing entries,. particularly effective when the maximum entry id number is exceeded and Columbus OM starts renumbering the entries at 1. Printer Servers Printer servers run only when required Multiple servers for the same device possible When adding printer select appropriate predefined: Device - Local printers TCP/IP - Network printer LPR/LPD - Using lpd service on printer port 515 Novell - Novell print server Command - Using non-Columbus command Modem - Modem attached printer Fax - Redirect job to fax instance XPrinter - Special printer driver

DMS Training (Slide 207)

LPR/LPD Printers Configuration Set the Host Name to the name of the host on which lpd is running Set Port Number to 515 (default) Set Queue Name to the name of the print queue that is used by the lp daemon This queue name is not the name of a COM print queue On a network card, the queue name is often not obvious: common names include printer lp lpt1 the host name print (xerox 440)

Lprtest (UNIX Only) To check that you have the correct names, type at the command line: lprtest host queue If the names are correct, then the text "hello" is printedDMS Training (Slide 208)

TCP/IP Network printers Considerations Printer name Printer IP address (hostname) Printer port number Porttest command xsearch

Configuration options Multiple options, discussed later

DMS Training (Slide 209)

Porttest Command Tests for responses from a range of the Printers ports suggests which port to use Format :

porttest host [range]

range is a range of port numbers to test: for example 9001 9500 If you omit this range, then Columbus OM tests port 1 to 9999. Make sure that the printer is idle. Initial message about print availability may not be accurate If the device is a printer and uses a network card, the port number is often 9100 5001. 35 515 HPLJ and Compatible IBM Minolta ? LPR/LPD port (favoured by Xerox)

The xsearch command provides a similar function

Print Server Parameters Some default, predefined options Many possible parameters Developed over many years Configurable as all COM servers 1 Edit config.tab file in servers directory 2 Click on relevant server on Explorer Sub-divided into 3 sections Configuration Action on Advanced configuration

Check Technical Reference manual for details E.g. Postscript yes /no/only

DMS Training (Slide 211)

Printer Classes

Printer class = group of printers with a single name Users can print to printer class of as well as to printer Job will be allocated to next available printer in class Different to printer groups which is a security feature
