(Architecture)• Lastly, describe the diction, syntax
and tone of this text, which Liu calls “music”.
Sentence Structure & Sentence TypesGet ready to write some stuff down!
Four Basic Sentence Types• What are the 4 basic sentence types?• Declarative – a statement• Interrogative – a question• Exclamatory – a statement with emotion• Imperative - a command
Four Basic Sentence Types Examples• Declarative: • Today we will go to the store.• Interrogative: • Will we go to the store today?• Exclamatory: • Today we will go to the store!• Imperative: • Go to the store today.
Now you try it! Write one example of each of the 4 types of sentences.
• Declarative• Imperative• Exclamatory• Interrogative
Clauses• Clause: a group of words containing a subject and
a predicate, that does not necessarily constitute a sentence.
• Independent/main clause– it can stand on its own as a complete sentence.
• Dependent/subordinate clause– it can NOT stand on its own as a complete sentence.
• Examples to come…
Subordinate clauses and main clauses• Two independent clauses (complete sentences):• I will go to the movie.• I will complete my homework.
• I will go to the movie when I complete my homework.
• When I complete my homework, I will go to the movie.
When you add a “subordinating conjunction” such as when, therefore, because, if, after, etc. in front of an independent clause, it becomes a subordinate clause. It can no longer stand on its own.
