There are new shoots in the garden, sticky buds on the trees and the tantalising promise of lighter nights and warmer days. Yes, Spring is well and truly on its way – and long overdue it feels. Spring brings with it change and the promise of the new and that is certainly something that Leicestershire is experiencing at the moment

Inward investment is apparent across the city and every sector within, but it is the city’s Arts and Entertainment sector that looks set for the greatest revolution; just look at the plethora of new restaurants and bars that have popped up over winter and don’t overlook the number of festivals and high profile arts events the county now attracts. A musical adaption of Adrian Mole has just opened to storming applause from audiences at Curve and we’ve just enjoyed one of the most successful Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festivals ever. Spring sees us go headlong into a season crammed with cultural celebrations such as Inside Out, a festival showcasing new local talent from the region at Curve, Let’s Dance International Frontiers at venues across the region as well as the joy that is Simon Says at De Montfort Hall, the Riverside Festival, St Georges Festival- the list goes on! With such frenzied activity across the region, the hardest part of my job is choosing what to feature as there really is an embarrassment of riches this season.

Our fascination with celebrating the new continues throughout this edition. We’ve an overview of some of the season’s key fashion trends for men and women; we show you why you should be mad about Masala; test drive the new Audi TT, which has been repackaged and relaunched; and we bring you our cherry pick of the very best things to do and see.

The spirit of newness is also extended to our new look Business section. This marks a fundamental and exciting new direction for dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND, as it’s our intention to make the magazine a one stop shop for Business and Leisure. For us, it made sense that our high-end readers – who we already know have high-end tastes – would be high-flying, highly-networked business leaders with a thirst for knowledge – be that work or play. Furthermore, it’s only right that as the city moves forward, so too should the magazine, as the one thing that doesn’t change is our ambition to be the best in LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND. We hope you agree.

Have a great Spring and see you in June. Don’t forget that our blog – www.dluxe-magazine.co.uk – and Facebook/Twitter keeps you up to speed all day, every day. You can find us as dluxe Magazine or dluxemag.

The county of Leicestershire has long been successful for its superlative textiles industry, which is as thriving today as ever it was: from the cutting edge techniques employed by World Class students at De Montfort University to ‘heritage’ fashion brands with roots firmly steeped in Leicestershire soil, such as Fox & Crop. If you’re a lover of Joules – another Leicestershire success story – but prefer your brands to be less mainstream, you need to know all about Fox & Crop, as we think you’ll love it.

The Fox & Crop motif was inspired by the original drawings which formed the basis of Leicester City’s famous Fox & Crop crest between 1949 and 1983. Hidden away for several decades, the sketches were rediscovered seven years ago during a garage clear out by the family of Sydney Needham (the Club Director of Leicester City Football Club from Market Harborough). The logo was then reformed to create the distinctive design you see today which represents the Fox & Crop clothing range.

Matt Payne, Brand Creator comments; “The concept behind the design acts as a symbol of the Leicestershire countryside and its long-established conventions. Continuing these through the generations further perpetuates these into our modern society”. It’s an ethos that underpins the entire brand range, that can be described as quintessentially British in styling with a nod to our rural culture.

To coincide with the brand new Spring/Summer 2015 ranges, which were photographed in Portugal recently, Fox & Crop is proud to announce the release of their new website. Following on from the success of their debut collection of classic polos, fine and chunky knits and rural outerwear – for both men and women – they’re also, justifiably, proud to be working with Loake shoes from Northampton, which are widely considered to be one of the finest shoes a man can own. The range has also been extended to include complementary watches and other accessories to give a complete lifestyle aspect to the luxury range.

Leicestershire store, Fenwick - who is a proud stockist of the range - were immediately convinced. Jeremy Harrington of Fenwick said: “Men’s fashion is evolving all the time, so it’s important to us that our collections are bang on-trend and that we are among the first stockists of the latest brands that everyone wants to be seen in. We were really interested in Fox & Crop at its concept stage and once we saw the quality of the final products, we decided immediately to stock the entire collection and give it a prime position in-store. The range is a perfect fit for our clientele”.

The range is also available at the City Fanstore, King Power Stadium.

DLUXE DOG IN THE EYE OF A NEEDLE

Willard Wigan MBE, the globally renowned microscopic sculptor that has been cited as the Eighth Wonder of the World has announced the launch of his own charitable Dog Trust. The charity will raise funds for organisations such as The Kennel Club and Birmingham Dog’s Home to support the amazing work that they do. Willard also announced that he is giving the chance to immortalise one lucky dog-owners four-legged friend -all in the name of charity.

The midlands based artist who made a microscopic crown for The Queen was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records for his micro works of art. The sculptures that Willard creates are so incredibly small that he works under a microscope and employs ingenious tools, such as a fly’s hair or an ex-girlfriend’s eyelash for paintbrushes. This passion for the diminutive stems from feelings of insignificance in Wigan’s childhood. He was severely dyslexic but undiagnosed, and his teachers’ harsh words drove him to hide in a nearby shed where he made furniture for his friends, the ants.

‘My work is a reflection of myself,’ says Wigan. ‘I wanted to show the world that the little things can be the biggest things. At school, I couldn’t express myself and felt like ‘nothing.’ I wanted to experiment with the world that we can’t see.’

On one occasion, whilst in his hiding place, Willard was found by a dog. The animal collected things for Willard and became a companion when he needed it most. This ‘man’s best friend’ scenario proved to be a fundamental influence on Willard’s love of dogs and the kindness shown by this particular dog caused an epiphany for the artist that would go on to inspire his charity and his latest masterpiece – and charity icon - Derek the Dog.

Derek the Dog is an immortalized Bichon Frise based on dluxe’s very own office pup Teddy. The sculpture is no larger than 1/3 the size of a grain of sand and took an incredible five weeks to carve, yet its impact on the dogs’ world could be gigantic, as it marks the first fundraising activity for Willard’s new charitable Trust.

ADOPT DEREKWigan’s fundraising intentions are two-fold: the first is to invite the General Public to ‘Adopt Derek’ and help him to help other dogs in need. A donation of £15 will buy you a share in Derek’s ‘adoption’ and

help him raise much needed funds for these incredible dog charities – many of whom rely solely on goodwill donations.

Each ‘Parent’ will receive an adoption certificate and regular updates on Derek’s Charity work and life. He will introduce you to some of his friends along the way, and you can keep tabs via a special link on his progress.

To ‘adopt’ Derek and help him with his charity work simply go to antidoteart.com select ‘Adopt Derek’ and add the number of ‘shares’ you would like to your basket. Each Parent will get their adoption pack with unique information and a special link that will allow you to uniquely follow his progress.

IMMORTALISE YOUR DOGThe second strand of his fundraising strategy is the unique chance to Immortalise Your Dog. The General Public – a nation of dog lovers – are being openly invited to bid for a chance for Willard Wigan to create a truly unique piece of microscopic work based around their four-legged friend.

It is a legacy like no other that will live on forever more. To get involved with this, head over to www.artnet.com for more information.

A new ‘King Richard III Tour of England’ has been launched to coincide with Richard III’s reinterment in Leicester that includes visits to William Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick Castle, Bosworth Battlefield, Leicester Cathedral, King Richard III Visitor Centre in Leicester, York Minster, Yorkshire Museum and the Richard III Experience, as well as Blue Badge guided walking tours of Coventry and Leicester, and a medieval banquet.

The five day, six night tour has been developed and co-ordinated by Leicester Shire Promotions, Shakespeare’s England and Visit York and designed to give visitors an all excompassing Richard III experience. The tour launches just as an updated version of the reconstructed head of King Richard III is launched by the King Richard III Visitor Centre.

The results of DNA testing carried out by Dr Turi King of University of Leicester in early 2014 showed that King Richard's hair was likely to have been blond, at least in childhood, and that he would have blue eyes. As a result of these findings, the reconstruction has now been updated.

The model was taken off display at the Visitor Centre and Professor Caroline Wilkinson of Liverpool John Moores University, who originally created the likeness, updated the work. Caroline said: "It was a delicate task to remove the eyes and replace with lighter ones, as they are made of glass. The hair colour has also been updated, including eyebrows and eyelashes."

Why are pupils at one of the East Midlands’ top independent schools abandoning the classroom and heading down to the woods? Alex Carter, Forest School Leader at Fairfield Preparatory School in Loughborough, explains why they are taking a leaf out of the Scandinavian book in a bid to boost learning.

A concept relatively unknown in the UK, “forest learning” was developed in the USA in 1927 and has since become a fundamental part of early years learning in a number of Northern European countries, particularly Denmark and Sweden. It’s a learning style that’s becoming increasingly popular on our shores, as environmental awareness and sustainability become more and more important for our future generations. By taking pupils out of the classroom at such a young age, we are ensuring that environmental awareness is seen as the “norm”, rather than an after-thought.

At Fairfield Preparatory School, I lead the Forest School sessions and see first hand how much the children gain from these experiences. I have been teaching for over 15 years, hold the Level 3 Forest Schools Practitioner Award, and I’m passionate about all things outdoors, whether it’s trekking, climbing or environmental protection.

It’s fantastic to be able to bring my experience to the Forest School at Fairfield and we’ve seen how our pupils’ ability to learn and retain information is enhanced through these practical experiences. Not all children have the freedom to explore the natural world outside of school hours, so we’ve found that ‘teaching without walls’ gives all pupils a chance to have a go at a range of different activities. With a focus on participation and learning, rather than competition, pupils build their confidence and communication abilities, helping them develop their social skills – and of course it’s great fun!

These sessions are a great way for children to reinforce what they have already learnt in the classroom. For example, our 5 and 6-year-olds have used forest learning to consolidate ‘measuring’ in Maths. They work in groups with an adult to measure the circumference of trees, a great hands-on way to back-up more traditional teaching methods.

As we head into the warmer months, forest learning also gives children vital lessons in how to play safely outside, especially around water. For example, at a recent session called ‘Pirates’, pupils investigated floating and sinking, by testing materials safely in a shallow stream. Every child was encouraged to talk, test and self-manage their own risk, learning as they went and of course, enjoying the great outdoors. Lessons which involve the use of ropes and shelters are far removed from the normality of the traditional school day, but are also a regular feature of the forest classroom.

During the second half of each forest learning session, children can play and explore under the supervision of the forest leader. At Fairfield, we are lucky enough to have lots of exciting things for children to explore, from a mud-kitchen, an archaeological dig site, a musical area, rope swing, trees to climb, a lifeboat, maths den, fire pit, and a writing area to name

but a few. It doesn’t matter if they get dirty – it’s a chance to let off some steam and learn safely, at their own pace.

Parents tell us they have noticed improvements in their child’s behaviour, self-esteem and intellect, and that their children come home excited to share stories and newfound knowledge from the sessions with them. We firmly believe that this ‘out-of-the-box’ learning style is essential to their well-being and personal development, as there really is no limit when you leave the classroom and enter the great outdoors.

REVISITED

WHEN TEXAS STARTED WORK ON THEIR NEW RECORD, THEY DIDN’T BEGIN BY WRITING SONGS – IN FACT, THEY PUT THEIR GUITARS TO ONE SIDE AND DUG OUT SOME OLD PHOTO ALBUMS. “25 YEARS ALREADY FELT LIKE A REALLY SIGNIFICANT ANNIVERSARY, BUT IT WAS ONLY WHEN WE LOOKED AT ALL THE OLD PHOTOS THAT THINGS FELT SO MUCH MORE REAL,” EXPLAINS SHARLEEN SPITERI, WHO FORMED TEXAS WHEN SHE WAS A 17-YEAR-

OLD HAIRDRESSER WITH HER FRIEND JOHNNY MCELHONE.

“With this album, we didn’t just want to make a Greatest Hits again - that can

be a bit lazy!” the straight-talking Scottish singer laughs. “We wanted to document our history – 25 years, as a band, when you think about

it, that’s like ‘woah!’ Also, it’s important, because there are really not that many female-fronted bands who make that.”

Those photo albums – filled with snaps of Sharleen

taken by world-famous photographers Ellen

von Unwerth, Juergen Teller and Rankin,

among others – inspired the band to completely

revisit the most iconic songs from their discography. “We play

these songs all the time, so now they just feel like part of my everyday life

and routine,” explains Spiteri, but this anniversary prompted the musicians to listen

to their tracks with ‘fresh ears’. As soon as they hit on this idea, Spiteri knew exactly who to call.

“I’d already worked with the producers Truth and Soul on my solo album Melody, and I really loved the way that they put a record together,” she says. “I knew they would have a great approach to this album, because although our fans and people who know us have grown up with these songs, the Truth and Soul guys hadn’t heard them before we went into the studio with them. They wouldn’t know a Texas song if it hit them in the face! So when we played ‘I Don’t Want A Lover’ to them, it could have been a demo, for all they knew. They were coming to it completely fresh.”

The band worked with the producers in their Brooklyn, New York studio to rework their hits, and this collaborative process gave Spiteri a chance to re-hear the songs she has been performing for a quarter of a century. “The songs took on a whole new meaning for me, because we considered them so much more. Parts of the songs which might not have seemed so important suddenly became so poignant to me, I suppose because I was singing them with a whole new perspective now,” she reflects.

Another contributing factor to Texas’ new approach was the involvement of new songwriting collaborators, Jack Townes and Karen Anne, who worked on the new single, ‘Start a Family’. “When we are all writing together, different parts of each song mean different things to each of us. And then that changes again when I sing the songs; when words come out of my mouth, they can mean something totally different again. It’s natural because I’m going to add my own emotion to them,” Spiteri says. She appears in the video for the track with actor Alan Rickman, who is a longtime Texas fan – and who previously danced the tango with Spiteri in the video for ‘In Demand’, back in 2000.

The haunting single is a melancholy, contemplative track. Spiteri explains the thought process behind their new offering: “’Start a Family’, to me, is about choosing different paths. Even beginning the song with that line, ‘You can start a family/Or you can start a war’, sums it up, essentially. It is about all the different paths in life and the various choices you can make. I definitely consider personal choices to do with life and love with more experience now.”

The singer will be sharing some of that wisdom and experience when Texas hit the road in April, for a UK tour with a difference. The interactive set up of ‘An Evening With Texas’ will give the audience the chance to pick the set list for each show, with Spiteri sharing stories and anecdotes between the songs. With 25 years’ worth of hits to choose from, the shows will be a true homage to Texas’ successful quarter century of making music together. As Spiteri puts it: “We’ve had a real ‘producer’ moment in music over the last year or so, with people like Pharrell Williams and Mark Ronson doing so well. With this album and tour, we really wanted to get back to songwriting, so that is exactly what this is: a celebration of songwriting.”

D A R E TO BAREOne of the most talked about trends from the Spring/Summer 2015 catwalks was not the colour palettes or prints, instead it was the fact that some designers opted for a complete no makeup look to showcase their collections.

So take your inspiration from Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Hugo Boss, Dries Van Noten and Jonathan Saunders and prove that less really is more. Just make sure your skin is up to the job!

NEW LOCKS GIVE STUNNING NEW LOOK TO LEICESTERSHIRE WOMANIf you cast your mind back to our Winter issue, you’ll remember our fantastic competition to win a head of new hair, courtesy of the celebrity-hairdresser, Malcolm Murphy Hair in Leicester. After much deliberation, Joanne Porter, 48, from Queniborough was delivered the good news.

Like most of us, Jo was chosen because she was completely new to hair extensions and didn't know a great deal about how advanced they are now and what can be achieved. Hair extensions nowadays really are for everyone; whether they’re wanting length, volume or both – it’s something the Malcolm Murphy team are renowned for, styling both Lydia Bright from TOWIE and X-Factor winner, Sam Bailey.

The first this was inviting Jo into the salon to find out exactly what she wanted to do with her hair and fill out their consultation sheet so that the team could create a bespoke hairstyle that would complement her and work well with her lifestyle.

Historically, Jo coloured her hair at home, so it needed some TLC from the award-winning Stylist, Natalie Maxwell, who overhauled Jo's colour by adding subtle honey tones throughout to lift Jo's colour and give it a more natural and multi-tonal look. Malcolm then matched the hair extensions by Great Lengths to her new colour and went for a longer layered look that can be worn smooth or tousled giving Jo more choice and versatility when it comes to styling her hair.

Great Lengths is a world leader in hair extensions, providing versatile, pre-bonded 100% human hair. The hair is of guaranteed origin and ethicality, and can be used to add length, volume, colour or texture to transform anyone’s look. Jo can expect to have her hair extensions in for up to six months and will be able to wash, dry and style her hair as normal.

Jo said of her experience “I found the whole experience incredible and I am overwhelmed with the transformation. Thank you so much”.

If you’d like to speak to Malcolm Murphy Hair about Great Lengths extensions, call 0116 319 0156 www.malcolmmurphyhair.co.uk

FACING THE FACTS ABOUT SKINCARE We all try to do our best when looking after our skin, especially as we get older. Diet, living and working in the city, sun worship and pollution all take their toll so when Dermacare invited me to their clinic to assess the damage I’d done to my skin with a full face scan I was not really looking forward to the results. There’s always good news after the bad news though as I discovered they have the perfect range of products designed to repair damaged skin writes Lilith Hunt Sheppard as she puts her face into the hands of the professionals.

The Dermacare Salon, at Stoughton Grange, bridges the gap between a beauty salon and a treatment clinic offering a range of services and products that are classified as 'cosmeceutical'. They basically act as a centre for problem skin; from helping acne-prone or oily skin to non-invasive treatments like facial peels and Dermaroller treatments, the salon uses a range of cosmeceutical

products that have been scientifically proven to work. It’s not just in salon treatments they focus on though, the team are also on hand to create a bespoke at-home skincare regime specifically designed to meet your needs and complement your treatments.

Upon arrival at the clinic I was welcomed by therapist Kate Farrier, who immediately sat me down and explained the process to me along with its benefits. Firstly I was put in the 'skin scanner' - a UV illuminated dish that magnifies and highlights your skins imperfections and general condition. It was with some trepidation that I surveyed the results but Kate was positive, pointing out the good bits as well as the bad and suggesting solutions for those problem parts!

The analysis of my skin enabled Kate to create a completely tailored skin care regime for me to follow at home with recommendations for treatments and products that would be best for me. We started with a daily skincare regime, which would then be complemented by salon-based treatments to resolve any issues or improve general skin condition. The whole process has been a real eye-opener - you rarely consider the damage to your skin. However, a visit to Dermacare salon is the first step on the road to healthier skin and a better skincare routine, as I really do know exactly what I need to do both at home and in the salon. The results? Great skin takes time, so watch this space and see!

For more information on Dermacare, please visit www.dermacaresalon.co.uk, or call the salon on 0116 271 1551, or visit them at Stoughton Grange, Gartree Road, Oadby, Leics, LE2 2FB

room for other functions, such as the navigation map. At the lower edge of the Audi virtual cockpit, the displays for outside temperature, time and mileage are permanently visible.

Other interior technology highlights include the Multi Media Interface with touch pad for fingertip data entry, navigation preparation, Audi Music Interface and Bluetooth connectivity, the Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system and keyless go. More traditional comforts have not been forgotten thanks to sports seats trimmed in Alcantara and leather. Outside the cabin, 18-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels, sports suspension, xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights and a speed-dependent active rear spoiler all also feature as standard.

The 2.0 TFSI – one of two engine options available - is suitably technologically advanced in keeping with its new habitat. The four-cylinder unit combines direct and indirect fuel injection for optimal combustion. In the TT the high-tech unit is combined with either front-wheel-drive and a six-speed manual gearbox or quattro all-wheel-drive and a six-speed S tronic twin-clutch transmission. It powers the front-wheel-driven version from 0 to 62mph in 6.0 seconds, and on up to a top speed of 155mph.

The remarkable blend of performance and economy offered across the TT range is partly attributable to its advanced Audi Space Frame composite construction, which

has been carried over and further evolved for the all-new model. Blending steel with a high proportion of lightweight aluminium in areas such as the side sills and side sections, roof, bonnet, doors and hatch lid has helped the 2.0-litre TFSI model to tip the scales at an impressive 1,230kg – 50kg less than its equivalent predecessor.

The second engine option – the 2.0 TDI – powers the exclusively front-wheel-driven and six-speed manual-equipped ultra model and despite being a diesel, Audi engineers never lost sight of the fact that the overtly efficiency focused TT ultra is first and foremost a sports car. It proves the point by accelerating from 0 to 62mph in 7.1 seconds and reaching a top speed of 150mph. Equally importantly it can also return up to 67.3mpg according to the combined cycle test, which translates into CO2 emissions of 110 g/km, a new record low level in the sports car world.

With great regular direct flights from Heathrow T5 on British Airways that take a relatively comfortable seven hours (eat, sleep, movie, read = you are there), Philadelphia is perfectly placed for a great value and fun holiday stateside www.britishairways.com writes Caroline Spence.

Unusually, the city centre is compact enough to walk round so you don’t have to drive anywhere, and the simple street grid system means its almost impossible for anyone to get lost. The city also makes a great base for visiting other parts of the East Coast – as it’s on the AmTrack (American railway) system it is a mere 1.5 hours to New York and 2 hours to Washington D.C.

For more information visit www.visitphilly.com and www.discoverphl.com.

SO WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT PHILLY?

Famous facelift: Well, the city has been the location of a number of blockbuster movies (often doubling up for New York) most notably all the Rocky films Parts 1-6, 1980s classics Mannequin (that’s Macy’s department store now) and Trading Places (the bank Eddy Murphy worked in is there). There is even a Sly statue, arms raised in triumph, near the steps he ran up in Rocky.

History: The city was once the capital of the old US when we ruled it. The Constitution was signed there, and the city was home to one of the most famous founding fathers Benjamin Franklin. So the place is full of history – this is American history so it only dates from the 18th century but everything is beautifully preserved giving the city centre a real bohemian character. There are so many sights to visit it’s easier to take an open top bus tour to see the edited highlights, get your bearings and decide where you want to visit. A must is the Liberty Bell, and there are various Museums dedicated to constitutional history.

Philly Friendy: It’s time to forget about the States being dangerous - in the past 20 years successive administrations have tackled the massive urban crime problem, making US streets safer to walk then our own. Guns are only in evidence on the police, and the people and place has a really friendly vibe. As with many places in the US, Philly residents are really helpful and welcoming, so cast off those British inhibitions and ask questions, talk to people – they will love you for it!

WHERE TO STAY?

Budget business: We stayed at the Sonesta Hotel, a centrally located business hotel, which is within walking distance of most of the main sights of interest. The rooms are spacious and well equipped however they don’t really cater for food apart from room service. However this gives you a great opportunity to try the local diners and cafes. Try the Manhattan Diner a few doors down for a great breakfast. www.sonesta.com/philadelphia

Beautiful boutique: Great for a few days R&R at the end of a trip, the luxurious Rittenhouse Hotel is situated on the exclusive Rittenhouse Square, and is listed as one of Forbes top four star hotels in the world. A perfect example of jazz age elegance, I have to admit this is one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The quiet attention to detail and friendly helpful staff coupled with beautiful views and décor made this the ideal place to relax and shake off the dust of long haul travel. Not for those on a budget but sooo worth the investment. www.rittenhousehotel.com

Different décor: try the Hotel Monaco for a strikingly different experience. The décor is fab but probably not to everyone’s taste. We loved its quirky mix of colours and global influences. Also it’s attached restaurant the Red Owl Tavern is a great place for traditional Amercian fayre – the breakfasts are particularly good.www.monaco-philadelphia.com

WHERE TO EAT?

Stylish Japanese: Try Morimoto, a beautifully decorated restaurant that provides a sanctuary from the hectic pace of city life. With a great array of Japanese food from sushi to tempura to ramen, this is a fab place for an intimate lunch or dinner. www.morimotorestaurant.com

Originally organic: recently named one of top 10 new places to eat in the entire country, High Street on Market is a hip café serving locally sourced and organic produce, all prepared on the premises – fab for a late brunch or to buy some of the fresh baked bread. www.highstreetonmarket.com WHERE TO SHOP?

As with the UK, this really depends on your taste and your budget.

Independent Minded: there is a really healthy independent retail scene in Philadelphia – many cool boutiques, vintage clothing shops and emerging designers can be found in the ‘Old Town’. We were fortunate enough to be in the city in October when the entire retail scene, corporate and independent comes together to celebrate the city’s burgeoning fashion scene. ‘The Philadelphia Collection’ is the equivalent of fashion week (or fortnight in this case) and many events such as catwalk shows and previews are held across the city. For more information visit www.thephiladelphiacollection.org.

Bargain Brands: On a budget? Or just want to bag a bargain designer handbag? Then try a trip to the Premium Outlet Mall, located about 45 minutes outside the city. This is so worth the extra travel as you can take advantage of discounts not seen in the UK and with our strong pound right now, you can make even bigger savings. For example, I got a pair of leather Converse for $21 (about £15), a Calvin Klein dress for $40 (approx £25) and a DKNY hat for $38 (about £22). My top tip: plan your route and your time carefully – you can go nuts if you’ve never shopped at an outlet before and spend money on stuff you will never wear so think about what you need and the brands you like and go there first. And remember you have to get it all home so leave room in the suitcase! www.premiumoutlets.com

Mainstream Macy’s and malls: desperate for something bang up-to-date? Go to the mainstream department stores and malls. Philadelphia is home to a fab Macy’s that stretches over multiple floors and departments, and is worth a look if you’re a fan of the classic 1980s movie Mannequin as this was the set! A bit further out of town, the King of Prussia is one of the biggest malls in the country, and offers a range of brands in addition to those that are familiar to us. Wherever you go produce your passport, many department stores offer discounts to overseas visitors!

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK:

Art Amazing: Philadelphia has an astounding street art scene – not only has the city a fab public arts programme that produces amazing murals across different areas of the city but the area has produced some great homegrown artists. Visit the ‘Magic Gardens’ an art and urban regeneration project born out of the 60’s hippy scene – this was one of my favourite sights in the city – something created out of a real need in a run down area that has become a city landmark. www.philadelphiasmagicgardens.org Muchos Market: A must-visit is Reading Terminal Market, not only can you see real Amish people selling their wares, but you can eat an amazing variety of produce, cooked in minutes in front of you. You

must try a traditional Philly Cheesesteak (steak, cheese, pepper sauce – need I say more?) and hang with real Americans (as opposed to other tourists) who shop there and eat with their families. www.readingterminalmarket.org

With thanks to: Christina Cassidy from Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau for a great tour www.discoverphl.com and APH for providing the Meet & Greet Parking at Heathrow Terminal 5. www.aph.com

LA SANGRADA FAMILIAMost famous for its modernisme architecture by Gaudi, the city began with gothic grandeur and has evolved with new modern architects continuing its avant guard style. The best examples of Gaudi architecture are La Sangrada Familia – the still to be completed (after 100 years of building) cathedral , Casa Batllo and Park Guell. This incredible park was originally bought by Count Guell who hired Gaudi to create a miniature city of houses for the wealthy, when this venture failed the city turned it into a public park in 1922.

SPRUCE UP YOUR KITCHEN FOR SPRINGNothing dates a kitchen like worn worktops, damaged doors, stained grouting, cracked tiles and burned surfaces. But renovating your kitchen and bringing the décor bang up-to-date needn’t cost the earth and could add upwards of 5% to the value of your property.

However if you’re comfortable with your layout and its familiar oven-sink-fridge work triangle, then don’t rip everything out and fit totally new units. Home makeover experts Granite Transformations can reface your work surfaces with composite granite, quartz, recycled glass or porcelain composites that fit right over existing worktops! You can also replace cabinet doors with new made-to-measure fittings, leaving the underlying carcases intact.

It gives you the perfect opportunity to explore fresh colour and style directions without the mess, disruption and expense of an all new kitchen. Black worktops can become white or bold colours, timbergrain cabinet doors can be transformed into high gloss acrylic and you can add splashes of brightness with glass mosaic panels or an island unit in a contrasting colour. You can even rework existing cabinets to create a central island unit or a full height larder storage unit. Remodelling like this means the choice is yours.

Choose a modern, maintenance-free composite material that is non-porous, flame-resistant and withstands stains, scratches, cuts, burns and knocks. Today’s agglomerate granite, quartz and recycled surfaces look like luxurious natural stone, but need just an occasional wipeover to keep their sheen and come in a wide choice of colours.

Granite Transformations have showrooms in Market Harborough and Hinckley, each with their own expert designers and fitters, who can carry out these kitchen makeovers and more, often in just one day.

PROPERTY WATCH by Hunters Estate Agents, Stoneygate, Leicester.

MARKET REVIEW 2015In terms of the market, 2014 was a game of two halves. Buyer activity reaching almost fever pitch by June until talk of interest rate rises, the mortgage market review and the general election led to a much more subdued back end of the year.

In our view 2015 will be the mirror image of this; hopefully, after the election is over, the busy market we saw early in 2014 will return. The fundamentals of the market are very strong, according to Nationwide, real house prices are around 9% below trend and recent changes to stamp duty should mean more houses coming to the market and more buyers.

Although, we can do little about the overall market conditions, we are making a real influence on our local market. Our TV Advertising Campaign started in January and we feel extremely proud to be one of the few independent agents that have been able to make the leap into TV as a medium for advertising.

Here To Get You There is not just a strapline, it is our mantra, our drive and our passion. We have many new plans for the year ahead, and really believe that 2015 will be an even more exciting year than the last one.

Want to spruce up your home without draining your wallet or simply need to bring an existing interior scheme together, here are our five favourite interior design tricks.

THREE IS THE THE MAGIC NUMBER

Instantly add the wow factor to any interior. Group ornaments in threes and experiment with scale; it’s amazing the extra impact you’ll get without creating clutter.

CREATE AN ILLUSION

Expand a space by including a giant rug. Try taping together several of the same rug with duck tape to get the size you need, you’ll be amazed how much your room will grow.

LESS IS MORE

Keep shelves clutter free. Several books stand upright along with tall vases that fill the space without overcrowding it. Use objects of various height and colour to add bookcase personality.

CENTRE YOUR SPACE

Every room needs a focal point to bring it all together. If you change your taste with every trend keep your walls neutral, wallpaper large panels of inexpensive ply and hang in threes. Simply repaper the panel when you feel like a change.

ADD TEXTURE

A good interior scheme doesn’t just rely on colour; texture plays an important part in every interior. Satins and silks exude glamour, velvets and damasks scream luxury whilst cottons and

linens are perfect for a more contemporary scheme.

With interior design there are no rules. Experiment until you find a look that works for you and go for bold!

Exercise Nutrition Lifestyle

Step 1

Body Weight CircuitSquatsPress-ups Lunges & Planks x2 per week!

Cut Out RubbishChocolateCrispsFizzy Drinks etc..

Only Drink at the weekend! No alcohol Monday - Friday

Step 2

Add in resistance, DB’s, BB’s or Machines. Mix lower body exercises with upper body e.g. DB shoulder press with BB squats.

Add protein to breakfasts, eggs, fish, red meat & drink 2 liters of water minimum per day

Aim to get 6-8 hours quality sleep 6 days a week. Go to bed before 10pm.

Step 3

Up training to 3 times per week. After your weights program add in 15 mins interval training on the rower. 1 min fast 1 min rest, you should sweat lots.

Aim to hit a protein goal per day, weight in KG X 2 in lbs. of protein e.g. 60kg women eats 120 grams. Men should eat slightly more.

More training means more Recovery! Add in epsom salt baths, foam rolling and maybe a sports massage once a week.

Step 4

Add in a training split where you would work lower body one day (Squats, Leg Curls, Lunges etc) then upper body the next day (Bench Press, Lat Pull-down, Shoulder Press etc). This should allow you to work harder and focus on specific areas.

Aim to get 3 protein meals a day with vegetables. Add in 2 healthy snacks in-between meals. Breakfast - 4 scrambled eggs with spinach and mushrooms. Snack - Handful of almonds with handful of blueberries

Add in a cheat meal once a week where you have whatever you want! Yes you heard me right. If you’re good enough in the week this is a great tool to keep you mentally strong for the rest of the week.

Step 5

Start to really up your work rate in training! You could take your rest in-between sets to 30 seconds. Superset your exercises, e.g. do squats straight into Lunges. Add drop sets e.g. start on heavy weight to failure then go straight onto lighter weight.

Look to add in basic supplements:1. Whey protein shake after training.2. Multi-Vitamin twice a day, morning and night.3. Fish Oil 1-2 grams with each meal4. Green shake first thing in the morningN.B. don’t go cheap with supplements, quality over quantity.

Start adding in a power walk in the morning 2 - 3times per week, listen to a motivational podcast, honestly this stuff works. Good things happen to positive people!!

IF YOU’RE GOING TO DETOX, DO IT IN STYLE

I never was much of a fan of spas and detoxing – the idea of cucumber water and colonic irrigation has never spoken to me of relaxation so it was with some trepidation I arrived at the Vidago Palace. Commissioned by Portugal’s last King, who sadly died before its completion, this is one hotel that truly is fit for a king. An imposing, regal building, the public spaces are all finished to sumptuous detail- the staircase is perhaps the most beautiful I have ever seen. Checking into my suite I am welcomed into a room of understated warmth. Calm, comfortable and subtley appointed; the perfect place to really relax before my programme of detoxifying treatments.

The hotel offers a complete detox experience made up of numerous treatments and experiences such as Tai chi, massage, PT and thalassotherapy. There’s also a specifically designed, delicious, light menu by chef Rui Paula so my lettuce leaf and water worries were well and truly over.

Many treatments offered by the hotel make use of its historical, naturally sparkling, mineral water. Freshly running at "The Source" the water is rich in iron and minerals. You’ll find it bottled in the hotel and promoted as part of the treatments due to its healing and therapeutic properties.

On to my treatments. In between making use of the gorgeous indoor pool, vitality pool, Hamman and sauna I chose three quite

different treatments. The first was a lower body massage to stimulate cells and help fight cellulite. The treatment rooms are as you would expect from such a fine hotel, softly lit with relaxing chimes playing throughout the treatment. The therapist used a combination of small, deep motions and penetrating oil to help stimulate cells and fight fatty deposits.

After each treatment you are taken to a relaxation room with reclined beds and offered a natural tea, from a varied selection, to complement the treatment you have had.

It was soon time for treatment number two: The Jet Blitz. Taking place in a wet room the therapist directs a jet stream of natural water over your legs, glutes and stomach,. The jet stream is powerful and stimulates circulation, working against toxins, and as part of an ongoing program can also work the muscles due to the power of the water jet. The sensation is a little like a glamorous run in with the riot police but an enjoyable treatment none the less that gave me the giggles.

Lastly, and I must say my favourite treatment, the Vichy Shower. Combining the natural spring water with a deep tissue massage, multiple shower heads rain down warm water on to you as the therapist gives you a really deep tissue massage. The water works twofold; firstly your skin is taking in the natural water working from the outside and secondly by offering an anaesthetising effect enabling a deeper massage. It really is like nothing I have ever experienced before.

The combination of fabulous treatments, beautiful surroundings and impeccable service makes the Vidago Palace a wonderful weekend getaway; perfect for a treat with the girls or for a romantic unwind. Detox packages start from around £200 per night. To find out more visit www.vidagopalace.com

Set in a small village in Portugal, the Vidago Palace first opened in 1910 as the destination hotel for the country’s rich elite. Following an extensive four year, restoration and the addition of an ultra modern and luxurious spa, Lilith Hunt Sheppard discovers it’s the perfect place to unwind, relax and detox in style.

Thinking about fostering but worried it’s not the right time? Then the Short Breaks Scheme could be the perfect introduction to fostering for you and your family. The Short Breaks Scheme suits people who would like to foster, but don’t currently have the time. On this scheme a disabled child comes to stay with you for regular short breaks of one or two nights – typically one weekend a month. Introductions may involve day visits to start with. Arrangements are flexible to fit in with holidays and other commitments.

The children will have disabilities ranging from complex special needs to physical or learning disabilities. Some children need carers with nursing or other experience, but most will be fine with people with no previous experience. The fostering team carefully matches new carers to a child whose needs they can meet.

The idea is to involve the children in your life as much as possible. This might be a few days at home or outings, visits or things like trips to the cinema. Coming to stay with another family helps the young people to feel more independent and they enjoy making new friends and trying new things.

Bringing up a disabled child can be very demanding for parents. Having a free weekend every now and then makes a massive difference to their health and happiness.

Anne has been a Short Breaks carer for the last ten years. She says: “I sometimes feel quite selfish because I enjoy it so much. Having children around gives me an excuse to go to the zoo and do all the things I enjoy and wouldn’t otherwise get the opportunity to do. It is so rewarding because, as well as getting to know the children and seeing them progress over time, you also get to know their parents and you can see just how much you are helping an entire family.”

Sean has seen how much his eldest son has benefited from spending time with a Short Breaks carer. “For our family, the Short Breaks scheme has been a lifesaver. When I tell my son that it’s his day to go to his carer for a break he gets a great big smile on his face. He really looks forward to going. He enjoys going out and doing different things and having a change of scenery. After a while you see how much this new stimulation is helping him progress.”

If you would like to find out more ring the number below. Please don’t rule yourself out before you talk to someone. All kinds of people are needed, including single people as well as couples and families who already have their own children. Short Breaks carers receive sessional payments, training and have access to 24-hour support.

Just ring 0116 454 4500 for a discussion. Or, if you prefer, you can just request that information be sent to you. www.leicester.gov.uk/fostering Facebook/leicesterfostering

HIGH SCHOOL ORIENTEERS RECEIVE ENGLAND CALL-UPA team of five girls from Loughborough High School has been selected to represent England at the International School Sport Federation (ISF) Orienteering World Schools’ Championships in Turkey this April.

Bethan Clargo, Elizabeth Mulvaney, Elizabeth Bedwell, Irina Ferapontova and Nicola Northcott will compete against school teams from 20 other countries around a 4-5 kilometre course across challenging and diverse terrain in the Kemer region of Antalya.

The sport was introduced to the school four years ago by Maths teacher Andy Smith, an orienteering enthusiast who competes regularly with her family. After circulating a bulletin inviting girls to attend an introductory session, she was thrilled when 23 responded. Now she regularly takes between 15 and 25 girls from all year groups to compete at events across the country. The team qualified as a result of their performance at the British Schools’ Championships which took place in Leeds in mid-November.

“I’m incredibly proud of the girls,” said Mrs Smith, who, as team coach, will accompany them to the event. “Orienteering is a wonderful sport that has become very popular at the school. With a physical and mental element, it requires skill, agility and quick decision-making. It’s fantastic for fitness and for building confidence.”

Team captain, Nicola Northcott, added: “It’s really exciting that we have been selected to compete in Turkey, particularly as we have only been running as a team in school for a couple of years. We can’t wait to get our England kit and are looking forward to meeting all the other orienteers from lots of different countries.”

Students at Our Lady’s Convent School (OLCS) have once again scooped the prestigious Diana Award in recognition of their work in the community. This is the fourth consecutive year that the students in the school have been recognised in this way.

The students, now in Year 13, undertook a range of activities in the previous academic year, from distributing harvest boxes to local senior citizens to writing and delivering an assembly in local primary schools. The judging panel recognised that the team had the ‘wow’ factor and now four representatives will be invited to the award ceremony in London.

This is no small achievement and each of the girls are proud to be involved in this programme, so much so that the students currently in Year 12 are vying to outstrip the achievements of this year’s winners. The Award recognises those who give freely of their time and commit to making a positive difference to those around them.

Speaking about receiving the award Frankie Devine, Caritas Prefect said, “It was hard work but a lot of fun,. The team I worked with to deliver assemblies in local primaries all gave 100% and it was clear how much our audiences engaged with the story.”

NATIONAL DIANA AWARD FOR LOCAL STUDENTS

CALL TO BAN JUNK FOOD ADVERTISING ON TVMore than half (59%) of parents with children aged 4 to 16 in the Midlands have been pestered by their children to buy junk food they have seen advertised on TV, according to a new survey by the British Heart Foundation.

The BHF polled over 2,100 UK parents with children aged 16 and under and found more than a third (37%) of parents surveyed with children aged 4 to 16 say they are badgered by their children at least once a week. Three in ten (30%) parents polled also said they think junk food adverts on TV make it difficult to help their children eat a healthy diet.

The BHF believes that this survey highlights the urgent need to close legal loopholes in the UK’s regulatory system and is calling for the UK Government to introduce tighter restrictions online and ban junk food adverts being shown before the 9pm watershed to protect children from making unhealthy choices.

While the chicken is cooking, put the couscous in a bowl and stir in the lemon zest then continue to prepare as per the pack instructions. Steam the Tenderstem for a 3-4 minutes until tender. Once the couscous is ready, fluff with a fork and tip into a large serving bowl. Stir in the coriander, Tenderstem and olive oil and season to taste. Divide the couscous between 4 plates and top with the chicken tagine.

Ask any food lover in Leicester to name their favourite restaurant and you can dare bet a pound to a penny that The Case will crop up, often accompanied by tales of yore. It is, without question, the city’s Grand Dame of Dining and has been at the cutting edge of cuisine since 1990. 2015 marks the start of a vintage year for the St Martin’s restaurant and champagne bar and, as dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND discovers, it’s never looked or tasted better…

“At the outset, we set a tone of voice and flavour for the restaurant, which we’ve always followed, even to this day; 25 years on”, says David Hartshorn – the founder of the restaurant and whose personality is as finely woven into the fabric of the former Luggage Factory building (fact fans will be interested to learn that the former factory boasted Royal patronage, as the Queen travelled with some of the ‘Orient Make’ luggage on a tour of Canada – hence inspiring The Case name) as the finest white linens bedecking the tables. It’s a philosophy that David is fiercely proud of, yet he is equally mindful that this heritage should not be a millstone, rather inspire the constant evolution that is the order of the day, every day.

At a time when Leicester has never looked more exciting or vibrant – especially in its dining sector with some of the industry’s leading brands investing in the city – The Case is well placed to capitalise on the cultural zeitgeist of both the newly landscaped Cathedral Quarter and the Richard III heritage site, both of whom will attract the hungry hoardes. Its spacious and light-filled first and second floor picture windows offer respite from the hustle and bustle below in a stylish interior that combines a wealth of original features juxtaposed with contemporary twists. As the energy of the city changes, so too does The Case.

But it’s not just the new-to-Leicester crowds that David is planning for; he’s hoping this anniversary year will welcome diners past and present in to celebrate; “I’m really excited about the next 12 months: we’ve created some exciting menu offerings that really prove that fantastic, fresh fayre can be for everyone. We cook every day with fresh seasonal produce – we’re one of the few restaurants in the city that can claim this. Our service is warm and relaxed but with the skills and knowledge built over the last 25 years. We understand that the recipe for success needs to be constantly refined by wonderful staff consistently producing value for money service”. Their challenge is clear-cut: come and taste the difference.

As part of David’s ‘evolution not revolution’ mantra, he is keen to acknowledge The Case’s sister venue, The Case Shop and Tasting Rooms on Millstone Lane, which is also undergoing a discreet nip/tuck and will, later this Spring, introduce a first-floor gallery and showcase space for local artists. It is a project developed alongside Cank Street Gallery offering a dedicated space for exhibitions and events

The Midlands was built on business and trade and over the next 10 years we are going to go through the next revolution. Our region is going to have thousands of owner-managed businesses go from family member to family member, or partner to partner or sold outright. If it’s not you then it is someone you know. Over the past 15 years of dealing with families and family businesses I have seen millions of pounds lost, squandered or just forgotten because the decisions that were made were not fit for the exit that had been dreamt up. On the other hand I have seen a small number that have been executed to near perfection. What was the difference between the two? Game plans, guidance and focus,. They all sound boring and trite but they are the lifeblood of a deal.

Deciding whether a family or partners should sell a business has a large number of outcomes; many of them are assumed like a big cheque in the bank; more holidays, less stress and more “me” time. It also come with its possible down sides like feelings of loss, after all you spent large amounts of time in and around your business. Often people associate their worth and status with their position so it’s wise to understand some of the pitfalls that can occur and have some simple answers on standby so that you can arrive at this momentous day with fewer headaches.

In an effort to bring you a wide range of interesting thoughts I took the time to ask a number of professionals and individuals that had gone through a sale or been party to a family transition to give us their best idea or ways to protect you from your worst scenario.

Many business owners get to a stage in life when they begin to think about working less or retiring. Unfortunately many owners then meet the harsh realisation that the business they have happily devoted there life to, has not been created to work without them.

This fact alone will make the transition to the next generation, the current management team or an external purchaser, an incredibly difficult transition where much of the potential enterprise value can be lost. The current owner tends to run the business based on their own judgment and experience. Often many of the core business relationships, processes and tools have not been recorded and only exist in the owner’s head. The owner and the business must document these key factors and the skills within the business must be transferred throughout key employees. Only by creating this environment, can any potential party wishing to take over the ownership and management of the business, fully understand how the business runs, how it generates income and ultimately maximise the enterprise value of the business.

It is also common that many SME do not have the necessary corporate governance in place and many of the legal documents any acquirer would wish to have may not be available or have been created on an ad hoc basis

and may now be outdated. It is also usual for a number of key business relationships to have existed on trust and relationship without formal contracts and this may create doubts for a acquirer who clearly will not have the same relationship on day one of a takeover.

A lack of these processes, transfer of knowledge and poor corporate governance can mean that any initial offer received on a sale can be significantly reduced throughout the sale or transition process as potential pitfalls and doubts are identified.

Don’t let this scare you, but you do need to act now to put your house in order.

On the flipside I have acted for an owner who realised he wanted to retire and had accepted that the only way out of his life labour was to sell off the assets and collect the resultant cash. Fortunately by structuring the business and nurturing a management buy out the owner finally exited with 5 times his original expectation. Taking action now… can seriously improve you wealth!

It's important not to forget what you're going to do once you've sold your business. Where are the sale proceeds going? If it's straight into the bank (or investments) to produce an income why did you sell the company in the first place, as it might have

been the most tax efficient vehicle in which to generate your new income stream. Yes, there is the benefit of looking at the immediate advantage of Entrepreneurs Relief, but you need to look at the wider tax picture in the long term, not just the one off hit. Looking at your past, current and future tax position is a very important part of selling your business.

Bart Dalton II, Founding Director, Gullane & Co

Gullane & Co was founded on the principle that family-run businesses reach a critical “transition” stage requiring strategic advice and coordination of all professional services. Through your Family Office, the delicate process of ensuring adequate wealth transfers from the business to the family, without legal or tax complications, is underpinned with measureable goals and outcomes.

“Bad decisions made with good

intentions, are still bad decisions.”

James C. Collins

So you took the chance, invested, gambled, put your heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into your business but what do you do when it’s time to say hello to a new challenge or retirement, and goodbye to the business you have invested so much of yourself in? PROPERTY TAX CHANGES HOW WILL THEY AFFECT ME?

WITH THE LAST YEAR HAVING BROUGHT A WEALTH OF PROPERTY TAX CHANGES, NEWBY CASTLEMAN CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS IS HELPING HOME BUYERS AND PROPERTY INVESTORS UNDERSTAND HOW THE CHANGES COULD AFFECT THEM.

Ian Fawcett, Tax Partner at Newby Castleman, which is based on Regent Road in Leicester, comments: “With all of the changes that have come into play over the last 12 months, those who are looking to purchase residential property, whether for themselves or as a buy-to-let investment, need to be aware of how these changes could affect them.”

STAMP DUTY LAND TAXIan comments: “The changes to Stamp Duty introduced following the Autumn Statement have made approximately 98% of house buyers better off. Buyers can now make major savings as the rate of tax will now be determined by the portion of a property price that falls into each tax band. For example, on a residential property priced at £230,000, the first £125,000 will be tax free, while the remaining £105,000 will be taxed at 2%.”

PRIVATE RESIDENCE RELIEFFrom 6th April 2014 the final period of ownership that is exempt from capital gains tax has been reduced from 36 months to 18 months, provided the property was at some time the only or main residence. This is a valuable relief that should not be overlooked.

CAPITAL GAINS TAX FOR NON-RESIDENT OWNERS OF RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY IN THE UK.

With effect from 6th April 2015 non-residents selling residential property in the UK will potentially be liable for capital gains tax on the increase in value since April 2015. Whilst private residence relief may be available it is anticipated that most non-resident owners of residential property in the UK hold that property for investment purposes.

ANNUAL TAX ON ENVELOPED DWELLINGSThe annual tax on enveloped dwellings was introduced on 6th April 2013 as an additional yearly charge on owners of residential property in the UK who are non-natural persons e.g. companies. Initially this applied to property valued at £2m or above. This has been reduced to £1m from April 2015 and £500K from April 2016. Ian comments “Whilst this has caught relatively few property owners to date this will now catch some unsuspecting property owners who need to be aware of the charge and the exemptions available.

If you are considering buying property in the UK it is important that you consider all the options available to avoid falling into unnecessary tax traps”

IF YOU REQUIRE ADVICE ON ANY OF THE ABOVE, OR HELP WITH ANY TAX MATTERS, YOU CAN CONTACT IAN FAWCETT AT NEWBY CASTLEMAN ON 0116 254 9262 OR EMAIL HIM AT [email protected]. ALTERNATIVELY, PLEASE VISIT WWW.NEWBYCASTLEMAN.CO.UK FOR MORE DETAILS OF THE FIRM’S RANGE OF SERVICES.

Jane Hinds is a Senior Associate Solicitor at Emery Johnson Astills, one of Leicestershire’s leading legal practices with award winning solicitors working across all areas of law including criminal defence, family law, social care, conveyancing, wills and probate with branches in Leicester city centre, Loughborough, and Coalville.

A Solicitor Advocate and member of the Law Society, Jane has worked for the firm for four years enjoying a diverse, interesting and successful career both in and out of court. Her approach to her work is friendly and personable, qualities that Emery Johnson Astills as a firm pride themselves on .

Dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND caught up with Jane to find out more about her work and her life.

1. What does your role consist of at Emery Johnson Astills?

I am an Associate Solicitor advising in the private client department, dealing with wills, probate, lasting powers of Attorney, and Court of Protection matters.

2. So what exactly is probate?

Probate is the generic name for the administration of estates after death; it involves ascertaining value of estates and dealing with inheritance tax calculations and payment, as well as gathering and distributing assets in accordance with the will, or the intestacy provisions where a person dies without having made a will. As well as this, probate is a technical legal term: the grant of probate is the legal document required for executors of the will to deal with assets in the estate.

3. What are the most common questions you get about probate?

They can be varied really but I suppose the most common initial question from people enquiring about probate is: ‘how complicated is it going to be?’

4. What one piece of advice would you give to those who ask you this?

I try to explain to people that this is not always a straight forward process. There are a number of legal responsibilities for the executor of a will to deal with so it can become very time consuming and complicated. These are two of the main reasons that people often find it helpful to instruct a Solicitor to help take the pressure off alongside work and other life commitments, and also to bridge their gap in knowledge of the legal process in this area.

5. What is your favourite thing about your job?

Without question it is the client contact. There is a huge satisfaction for me in seeing matters through from start to finish, from the initial instructions that the family give, to being able to sign off and distribute the estate. In this job I am lucky to be able to work with people from all walks of life as every case is unique. Some estates will be straight-forward for me whilst others will be a challenge and I love the variety. For clients it is likely to be a time of stress and grief so I am in a position to support them through a really difficult time and that is incredibly rewarding both professionally and personally. I also really enjoy working with my more vulnerable clients, be they elderly or people with mental capacity issues. 6. What is your favourite Leicestershire restaurant? If I had to choose one then it would definitely be The White Peacock. Our offices are in the city centre so it is a great location for us to visit

and considering it is in the heart of the city it has such a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Plus the most important factor … I love the food!

7. What are you most proud of in the last year?

My most proud achievements in the last year are actually the achievements of my children. My son recently became Private Secretary to a Government Minister, and my teenage Daughter was successful in auditioning for Curve Young Company so she will be in one of their productions this summer at the same time as doing her GCSE’s!

8. How do you unwind after a hectic day at work?

Walking my dogs is my time to unwind after work. I have two small dogs who love nothing more than to run around in the fields getting covered in mud so it’s not exactly the most relaxing experience but it works for me.

9. Where is your favourite place in Leicestershire?

My favourite place in Leicestershire is where I take my dog’s walking in the countryside around Charnwood Forest. It is so beautiful throughout the year and challenging enough to keep me fit.

10. What is the biggest challenge that you face at work?

Although working with vulnerable clients is a favourite part of my job it can bring the greatest challenges. When I am acting for vulnerable clients I have to ensure that they have the capacity to deal with the situation in front of us. This is why understanding and getting to know my clients is so crucial.

11. What is your favourite quote?

“Grief is the price we pay for love” - This is a sentiment that has been used by others but perhaps most famously by The Queen after the 9/11 attacks. I love the poignancy and truth behind it.
