YOU’RE IN FOR A RIDE
Enas Hashani Editor-in-Chief
July is rolling in nicely, we’re halfway through the Holy Month and the festive lights are starting to line the streets signaling the coming of Eid Al Fitr.
For this issue of DJ, we decided to put together a special edition that celebrates and gives insight into the men of the city. A decision that made most of the gents in our office jump out of their seats and left the rest of us intrigued.
As we were brainstorming, we found ourselves asking, “What do men want?” Someone yelled “cars!” from the back of the room followed by a dozen yes’s. Sure enough, a good portion of these pages have been crafted to make the eyes of petrol heads twinkle. And as usual, the issue is filled to the brim with relevant articles for everyone.
Destination Jeddah is a magazine that is made for you by you. We are able to churn one issue after another because of the wonderful Jeddawis setting up shop in the city, driving change in the community and simply making Jeddah a pretty awesome place to live.
Eid Mubarak and may your days be filled with joy, blessedness and laughter!

Thumbs Down to Swindler Tricks Twitter Users for Sympathy, Money A twitter user by the name of Sara Ibrahim managed to convince thousands of Saudi twitter users that she was a child with cancer before being uncovered. The unknown person behind the fake social media accounts had been using the images of an actual cancer survivor named Esme to solicit sympathy and donations from people. Reports indicate that the imposter had redirected inquirers that wished to help her to a bank account that belonged to a woman named Ilham Mahfooth who was allegedly a Syrian refugee in need of help. Lawyers said the deception may carry a 3 year jail sentence and a SR 2 million fine.

Team Galag Concludes Gumball 3000
The representative Saudi team in Gumball 3000’s annual run, Team Galag, won the Spirit of Gumball3000 this year for awesome overall everything, by which we mean we loved their steampunk inspired baseball hats, their brilliant car and their name. The team drove in a Mercedes SLR with Saudi plates and what seemed to look like a slick black matte paint job and revving that really was, well, galag. We have received reports with information noting that their Snapchat had been a highlight, but this writer missed it. Till next year, Gumball 3000! And Team 37… Put your hats up for sale already, will you?
The “Road Safety” campaign launched by Saudi Total aims to raise awareness of safe driving and traffic safety to the community, especially the new generation of children. The campaign is being run at schools in Saudi Arabia by providing younger generations with a better understanding and knowledge of road safety, with more than 3,000 students participating in Jeddah. The Saudi Total campaign is being instructed by the company’s safety specialists.

Why Social Responsibility is a MustMOHAMMED ALIREZA
Out of all the franchises to choose from, why McDonald’s?We were interested in McDonald’s as it is globally renown as the number one food retail brand. When it became apparent that the corporation was willing to enter the Kingdom, we approached it. It is basically the ‘golden nugget’ of quick service restaurants.
What are some of the philanthropic projects that McDonald’s has undertaken in the country? An active lifestyle is very important for one’s well being, and as a brand we believe that awareness should be created in the communities through the various sporting programs we hold. We sponsor or partner up with sports related activities and organizers in the region. Four years ago the Jeddah 3x3 Basketball tournament was created after being approached by Team Up – a young and enthusiastic Saudi agency. The tournament now involves a charitable aspect where each of the three sponsors donate SR 10 to charity for each basket scored.
Moreover we organize the McMile Run, a sporting marathon in which children and adults of all age groups can participate. We also have programs that involve hospital visits by our customer relations team, some of whom get dressed in McDonald’s characters, in an effort
DESTINATIONJEDDAH.COM 21
to put smiles on people’s faces, especially children. Additionally, we have long standing relationships with many charities in the region, which we always assist and support whenever we can.
On what basis do you choose these projects? From the start, we've been committed to doing the right thing. Our efforts ensure that our business practices and policies make a positive impact on society. We try to support any initiative that has a positive impact in whatever way we can. For us, children really come first, and many of our activities have been related to them and their
well-being. For the last few years we’ve been doing the Ramadan Book Program in which we create and develop children’s stories teaching them good morals and values that are relevant to our society. We then sell them through our restaurants and the proceeds are donated to charity.
What are some of the activities McDonald’s engaged in that encourage the employment of Saudi youth? In the early years, it was quite a struggle to employ Saudi youth, due to the perceptions associated with working in the service industry, but now, the winds are changing. Our Saudization programs are constantly evolving to better suit the needs of the Saudi youth and we work hard to create an environment where they can feel that they can develop and thrive. We’ve broken barriers and have been leading not only in the industry but also in the
Annual Jeddah Basketball Championship, March 2015
Zat End of Year Party, May 2015
private sector as a whole in terms of Saudization. We’ve always believed that the youth are the future of our country and currently we have over 25 percent Saudization in our company and we are working hard to increase it.
We have also introduced a couple of manager trainee programs. These are tailor made programs that are developed based on the educational and experience levels of various applicants. This will allow participants to be fast tracked to a store manager position in as fast as nine months in some cases. We try to work closely with the MOL and the HRDF to support their initiatives and programs, and we hope to maintain this.
We have also been working with the Help Center to employ special needs young adults in our stores where we train and develop them in a safe and friendly environment.

Clean Your Finances With ZAKATAll you need to know about zakat.
In terms of meaning, the word Zakat is taken as “purification” and “growth.” In the light of Islamic teachings it is defined as an act, made obligatory upon every eligible Muslim, in which he or she has to give a calculated amount of his/her wealth to less fortunate people. who have been described by the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and hadith.
The teachings of the Holy Qur’an and hadith classify the people on whom Zakat should be spent, into eight groups:
"The alms are only for the Fuqara' (the poor), and Al Masakin (the needy) and those employed to collect (the funds); and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allah's Cause, and for the wayfarer (a traveler who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise." [Al Quran 9:60]
1
ZAKAT IS OBLIGATORY ON THESE KINDS OF WEALTH 1. Gold and Silver (or their equivalents in modern currencies)2. Tradable assets owned by one’s business 3. Grains, grapes and dates 4. Freely-grazing livestock and cattle

GRANTSIf the money you have is in the form of a grant from the government, the easiest way for you, with regards to paying zakat, is to wait until one hijri year has passed, then check your bank and pay 2.5 percent (25 out of every thousand) from whatever you have. In case you are living hand to mouth, as it were (i.e., spending it all straightaway), and you do not have enough left to reach the level of the nisaab, and a year has passed, then you are not obliged to pay zakat.
If a person’s wealth exceeds the nisaab, then they must pay zakat on their total wealth. Nisaab is equivalent to the monetary value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Since the nisaab value constantly changes, it should be checked and calculated before paying zakat.
THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF ZAKAT Zakat on wealth, which differs from Zakat Al Fitr. Whoever pays zakat on wealth is not relieved of paying Zakat Al Fitr and vice versa.
ZAKAT ON BUSINESSESSteps you should follow while paying zakat for your business:
1. Take your current savings, all cash in hand, any tradable business inventory you own, and the value of any active investments and marketable securities you have and add them together. 2. Deduce any immediate liabilities such as your bills, payroll, insurance payments, etc. 3. Subtract your immediate liabilities from your current assets.4. The following equation may be useful to conveniently get the percentage of zakat: The amount of zakat = the value of goods in hand + cash assets + recoverable debts - debts x 2.5 percent.
The Department of Zakat and Income Tax (DZIT) is a government agency that reports to Ministry of Finance. It was established as per Ministerial Resolution no. 394, dated 1370/8/7 H. (1951/06/14).
KEEP IN MIND• Zakat cannot be paid for building, repairing or renovation of mosques.
• The money from zakat cannot
be used to pay the outstanding
debts of a person who died. If paid, such action will be considered invalid. Whoever
dies and owes zakat, his heirs
must pay it from his wealth, and
that takes precedence over the
will and inheritance.
• No zakat is due on houses, cars or buildings that a person
owns, unless one intends to trade in them.
• By reducing wealth confinement the Zakat system
makes sure the circulation of
wealth in society is fair.

The Royal Designers can customize the interior, exterior, braking, performance and anything else that needs to be done to make the ride look better. At the time being, the company focuses on high-end cars such as the Tesla, Fisker, Corvette, Camaro, sports cars and European cars.

Al Nabulsi first started off with simple inexpensive customizations of mirrors, wings and other small parts. The first full project was a Lexus IS in 2010; it took the company approximately a whole month to complete that project. Now however, the all grown company finishes a project in only a week.
When asked what was Al Nabulsi’s favorite car to customize, the Mercedes G63 sprung to mind as it’s a big car with a big engine and he believes it gives him a lot of space and room to utilize.

The company installs different types of parts. To begin with, there are the small parts that are fully made in-house such as splitters, wings, flender flares and body kits. Secondly, there are the customization body kits that are imported such as Mansory, Hamann and other brands.
Thirdly, there are customizations that are not limited to finding the suitable bodies but may require the modification of existing ones. For example, a Mercedes CLS Class body kit was once modified to fit on a Mercedes C Class. The two vehicles are of different sizes so the edges of the body kit had to be made, the bumper had to be cut in half and remolded to fit the size of the C Class.
The Royal Designers have the capability to render and 3D print the final outlook of the car before clients make the decision. Some clients know exactly what they want beforehand while some clients are open to see what the company has to offer.
The Royal Designers started here in Jeddah, but Al Nabulsi will carry on with his vision to expand to other key areas in Saudi Arabia.

UberOrdering an Uber car is awesome (actually it’s fun) and super-easy. You do it on your phone. The app interface is simply beautiful. You pinpoint where your location is, and before you order the car, Uber tells you how many minutes away an available car is.Once you order, you have %+90 confidence that the car will be there when it says it will be there. However, you need to sign up with your credit card, as it doesn’t accept any other form of payment. For long trips around and outside the city, they have fixed flat rates. There are two car options: low cost Uber X starts with a base rate of SR 6 and adds 0.50 per minute. Minimum fare is SR 12. Uber black is the original Uber, which starts its base rate at SR 9 with a minimum fare of SR 20.

Easy Taxi If you don’t mind taking a taxi instead of riding in a private car, Easy Taxi is the service to use. We haven’t come across any other taxi services with such fast arriving cars. There’s always a 100 percent guarantee that a cab will reach you within minutes of requesting one. The taxis are mostly clean, however, not always. At first they didn’t really have a dedicated system for fares: you could either negotiate the prices or go along with the meter system. Fare rate is around 10-5 riyals more than what you would pay a normal cab.
The best thing about Careem is their occasional offers and free-
ride promotions. They are very generous about that.
Taxi PixiTaxi Pixi uses the same concept as Careem. However, the app interface is a bit cluttered. They have two kinds of trips: one way or car rentals. Each kind of trip offers four different types of cars. Cars can also be rented for 4 hours, 8 hours or for a full day. Prices depend on your location but often start at above SR 18. They give you a receipt after completing a trip. Cars are always clean and the drivers courteous.
Payment: Cash or credit Web: easytaxi.com
CareemCareem provides easy sign up and bookings with their app, which is available for download on all platforms. It’s very straightforward and easy to use. Once you sign up, they prompt you if you need to be picked up right at the moment or if you would like to book a ride for later. If you have chosen a drop-off location, the app shows you an estimate amount, of course depending on the type of car you have chosen.
Most of their cars are on time and the chauffeurs are very well mannered.

STYLING ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS
HATEM ALAKEELDesigner/ FounderWeb: tobybyhatem.com
Have your own style and create your own
personal statement that reflects your personality. You don’t have to follow
the trend wagon. – Hatem Alakeel, Toby
Things Men Should Always Consider • Being well groomed and presentable is vital to you and your reputation. Don’t look shabby; look elegant. • Always take the occasion you are going to into consideration, dress accordingly.
For a classic traditional lookA traditional white and well-ironed classic thobe made of mixed fabric.
For a causal lookA good pair of blue jeans and a well-tailored dress shirt with a cool blazer.
Style Your Shemagh “Every region has a different scarf. Right now people are mixing the red and white together and that’s in style.” – Hatem Aqeel, Toby
• Keep it simple but classic. • Add your own edgy touches but make sure they complement your outfit. • It’s cool to link traditional with modern. Mix everything but don’t overdo it. SO

The world of fashion is a very complex one.
Our perspective of clothing has changed a lot throughout the history of fashion. My style falls in between
classic and hipster. – Bakry Alkaff
What to Keep in Mind
Recent thobe trends are metallic and light grey.
1- Runners are more likely to greet other runners who are wearing similar kit.2- Modern men are twice as likely as women to own more than 10 pairs of shoes.3- The human eye takes longer to travel across patterned fabrics, this makes the body appear larger.4- Men think they are physically stronger when wearing a Superman t-shirt!
Trends to look out for • All White and Minimalist Looks: This is a refreshing change from the bold patterns that have taken over menswear these past few years.• Pastels: Head to toe monochrome and tonal looks, in more nude, yellow, peachy-pink tone, or deeper shades of rose pink are coming on strong, possibly until 2017.
No No’s • Don’t overdo it with prints. We get that you are fun and into colors. • Fits that are not tailored. Please avoid anything that’s too tight or too loose, basically anything ill fitting.

You want to look good don’t you? These tips will aid you on your mission!By Sahrish Ali and Sohila El Saadany
COLOGNE 101
Do not apply too much cologne, as you do not want to suffocate those around you. The best place to apply your scent is the chest, because that way the fragrance will be trapped between your skin and clothes and will last longer. You can also apply it on the biceps or crook of the arm.
SHAVE IT FOR LATER
• Skin tends to be puffy first thing in the morning so for less cuts give it at least 10 minutes to breathe before shaving. To prepare skin for shaving, use warm water to wash your face.
• Apply shaving cream using your fingertips in a circular pattern.
• You’re not a rebel even if you act like one. Go with the flow when it comes to shaving. Don’t go against the grain with your razor to avoid skin irritation.
• In case of skin irritation, use anti-inflammatory balm and try rubbing the area with an ice cube.
• Always moisturize, it is important.

Sumou Gifts mainly specializes in the customization of covers for the Qur’an and other books and booklets.
An Arabic word for “highness,” Sumou Gifts is the one place where you will

By Sohila El SaadanyGreenbox Museum is nestled in Amsterdam to expose the Dutch audience to art made by Saudis. Aarnout Helb, the museum’s founder, offered his insight on Greenbox and Saudi art.
A Piece of Saudi in Amsterdam
Although trained as a lawyer, Helb was interested in art and beauty ever since a young age. According to him, “Art just comes with life, not with any profession. Artworks are mere flowers of the mind and craftsmanship and they need to be evaluated to distinguish between nonsense and illusion, truth and genuine projection.”
He decided to open Greenbox Museum of Contemporary Art from Saudi Arabia, solely dedicated to art made by Saudis on July 12, 2008. The process for that was a long one, but Helb took such a step to try and limit misconceptions about Saudi culture. He explains, “One element to it was increased xenophobia in the Netherlands since the 1990s.
A R T S & E N T E R TA I N M E N T
Another was this open world of internet communication in which recitals and sermons from the MENA region may end up on television here without anyone to supply context or history to embed things in a manner that the majority of people understand and appreciate.”
When asked what interested him in Saudi art particularly, he replied, “I do not define anything as ‘Saudi art.’ I take an interest in what artists make in Saudi Arabia. What I find interesting is the moral position that Saudi Arabians have in the world at large, because of their connection with the land and cities from which one of the world’s most important cultures originates and always returns.” CO

Even though it may not be very easy to get Dutch people to visit the museum because it is very foreign to them, Helb still succeeds in getting a lot of people interested. She was inspired to take on her coral work seriously after watching workers use concrete on a house project she was involved in. She explains, “Without realizing, I started using the raw look of concrete when I covered an entire wall in it and designed partitions out of it. Seeing the result of the concrete around, I thought of testing both materials (coral and concrete) together.”
Qummosani combs beaches looking for corals and shells that would reflect her artistic essence and make beautiful art pieces. “I select the coral then choose one of my many handmade molds. Depending on the size, it may take from ten days to two weeks per item. This is just for the mold. The coral itself takes a minimum of three months to prepare.”
In regards to difficulties she faced, Qummosani says, “Building a mold wasn’t easy for me because I had no clue how to build one or what measurements to should start with. Until I finally created the first two molds as basic ones. From there I started
challenging myself to see how creative I could be with the molds.”
Qummosani just commenced with her artistic endeavor and hasn’t displayed her work at any exhibitions yet, but she is looking forward to expose the crowds to her unique collection soon. Until then, she is showcasing her work on Instagram and making it available for purchase by art enthusiasts.

Tucked Away: Pizza the New Yorker Way at New York Cab Pizza By Mohammed Mirza
I recently got to visit New York Cab Pizza and try pizza the NY way with my friend. The place has an interesting appearance externally, covered in glass from the ceiling to the ground. I loved the seating area but it is a bit too small, with just around six tables to dine in.
Large pizzas cost us both SR 45 and the serving size was more than sufficient for two people. It took a rather long time to serve us, but when the pizzas were finally brought in, we were stunned by their huge size. Both pizzas were superbly delicious. The crust was slightly crisp and the taste was unquestionably appetizing.
Considering the price and taste, this is one
place that I’d surely want to visit again and again. But because of the seating area, be prepared to see a large waiting list if you are planning to dine in.
Men’s Choice&Kibda, Taking Kibda to The Next Level
Skipping the appetizers, we went straight for what we came for – the pizza. There were around eight types of pizzas to choose from, and since a friend had already tried and tested the place before, he suggested the Super Supreme and Meat Lovers.
Price Range per head: SR 20 – 25 Taste: 5 Ambience: 3.5 Value: 5 Overall: 4.5
Enjoying good food and great taste is the inspiration that led to &Kibda. Jeddah’s newest secret, &Kibda, offers traditional food with a unique twist in a street style ambience. We’re talking kibda tacos and toromba topped with ice cream;
something Jeddahwis have long been looking forward to.

Traditional Eid Al Fitr Breakfast
Munazzalah Munazzalah is a combination of tahini and a source of protein like eggplant or lamb chunks. The combination differs depending on the cities of Hijaz.
Makmoor The name literally means “covered tightly” and this reflects the cooking technique used in this zucchini-based tomato stew, which also includes lamb, sugar and a small amount of rice. It is served with Feta cheese to enhance flavors and texture.
Makmoor originated in the kitchen of Hassam Shihab Halawani, a Hiazi sweet manufacturer, whose daughter accidentally added sugar instead of salt into a regular savory stew. The result was so good that it became a Eid Al Fitr tradition in around 1950 and is continued to this day.

Al Thamarat’s latest fine dining restaurant will captivate you with its narrative of succulent and timeless flavors of Hejaz. Historically, the constant flow of pilgrims settling, merging and integrating with the families of Hejaz has given it a unique, multicultural and rich heritage, which can be seen in its cuisine.
The new Al Thamarat gourmet restaurant immerses you in a cultural experience. The
interior of the restaurant combines antiques from Hejazi households collected from the families of Hejaz, as well as artworks that, created by Sarah Mohanna Al Abdal, that express the culture and stand tall adorning the restaurant’s walls. The blend of food with local culture will truly accentuate your dining experience.
Prophet Ibrahim’s prayer is the inspiration behind the restaurant’s name, and it adds to the restaurant’s sense of antiquity. The elaborate menu of authentic dishes is presented to the diners by waiting staff dressed in Hejaz inspired outfits.

The chefs at Thamarat know the importance of desserts in a Hejazi meal. Diners must try the ghorbaliyyah, a pastry filled with almonds, sugar and cardamom, coated with sweet syrup. The halawa turki, made from roasted sugary dough, is the fine finish to your traditional dining experience.
Proudly serving traditional food in a fine dining setting, Thamarat Restaurant seems ready to revolutionize the fine dining scene in Jeddah.
No meal is more important to local Hejazis than a rich breakfast table filled with a variety of dishes. Offering age-old favorites of different types of fool, masoub, tamees, mitabaq and shakshookas to lesser-known dishes found only in Hejazi homes such as the shi’reyyah, mush and hareesah, the dishes are never complete without a side pot of fresh Madini red herb tea. Breakfast at Al Thamarat is the perfect start to your day.
For either lunch or dinner, the first item on your plate should always be the traditional meat stuffed dumpling known as mantu. Another must-have is the bedinjan aswad bil-laban entrée; a dish of mashed ripe eggplants served in mildly spiced laban.
Any Hejazi meal must be complemented by soup. Satisfy this tradition by trying out their shorbat hab, a blend of barley and meat cooked in a Hejazi spiced tomato soup. The main courses are elaborately put together offering a variety of fattah dishes each with its own taste indulgence. Hareesat Molokhiah, and of course the Kabab Meero with its unique spices is not to be missed.

Complex CarbohydratesThey release energy to the body over longer periods of time, thus keeping energy levels stabilized.
1. Fruits & VegetablesThese provide natural sources of fiber which can help prevent constipation, a problem faced by many during fasting. Fiber builds up roughage, helping clean the bowel, and provides satiety which will help you feel full and satisfied.
2. Whole Wheat The complex carbohydrates in whole wheat products take time to break down inside the body. They release calories at a slow rate and give you energy throughout the day which makes them really useful during fasting. The slow burn up of calories prevents lethargy and tiredness.
5 SUHOOR POWER FOODS YOU SHOULD NOT
MISS OUT ONSuhoor is an essential meal in Ramadan. It gives
you the needed strength and vitality to get through your fast. Many people tend to neglect these
important food items when they are actually very beneficial to them and to their fasts.

Plan your suhoor in advance to avoid bringing unhealthy food on the table!
Salty FoodsCanned or processed foods, salted nuts and pickles are some foods you should avoid. Salt removes stored water from cells and causes dehydration. Dehydration will make you feel thirsty and make your fasting experience unpleasant.
3. ProteinsMeat, legumes, eggs and dairy products are rich in proteins. Ensure you have at least one of these sources in every meal during Ramadan since proteins are very important for the cells of your body. These also increase satiety levels which thereby reduces the temptation to binge eat unhealthy and sugary snacks.
4. Water Always remember to stay hydrated during Ramadan. Drink enough water throughout the evening and during suhoor to keep your body running at its best.
5. Dates Their high levels of soluble fibers are essential for healthy bowel movement and comfortable passage of food through the digestive tracts. Hence, dates are known to relieve symptoms of constipation.
FOODS YOU SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM!
Fried FoodsFried foods are at the forefront when it comes to many cultures. However eating fried food will create havoc in the digestive system. They force the release of enzymes in the stomach and take a long time to digest. Heartburn and diarrhea are commonly associated with fried food consumption. Fried food items have very little nutritional value and lasting energy.
Refined ProductsSweets, sugars and white bread are some refined products I would not recommend for suhoor. They release calories at an extremely fast rate and will leave you feeling hungry, tired and worn out.

Protein is an essential supplement for healthy muscles, bones and body. Meeting the daily protein requirement is essential, especially if you are working out and placing any form of stress on your muscles. The amounts vary depending on the age, sex, weight, height and activity level of the person.
Your Guide to HEALTHY PROTEIN CONSUMPTIONDoes your body need more protein?By Amal Al Toaimi
According to the Institute of Medicine, your daily protein intake coming from protein sources should range from 10 – 35 percent.
Like any other food, overconsumption of protein can harm the body and damage your liver and other vital organs. Furthermore, only a certain amount of protein can be digested in one meal so it becomes unnecessary and harmful to exceed the body’s threshold. This ideal amount of protein is recommended to be 20 grams.
Protein promotes satiety and keeps a person full for long hours since it takes time for the body to digest; this is why you should always have a source of protein in your meals/snacks. Whether it’s a handful of nuts, a protein shake or even chocolate milk.

PROTEIN IN TOWN
It is important to remember that having a meal with too much protein is pointless since the body only digests what it needs and stores the rest as fat, similar to other excess food intake.
Admittedly, an active individual who works out on a regular basis, whether it’s endurance or strength training, would require a higher amount of protein compared to a person who doesn’t engage in exercises at all. This is because during a workout your body tears muscle, and in order for it to grow and recover you would need the sufficient amount of protein to help build these tissues and enable fast recovery. In order to maximize benefits, your post workout meal should consist of protein, fats and carbs.
With our busy lifestyles, having a meal right after working out can be difficult for some. A great tip is to carry a protein snack which is conveniently available in the market, making it much easier to consume post-workout protein.
You can opt for the appropriate nutritional content depending on personal health goals.Always remember that healthy food and lifestyle are the gateway to a happier life.
Note: Don’t forget to drink around 2.5 liters of water per day and get seven to eight hours of sleep.

Another study showed that people who take ACV tend to consume 200-275 less calories for the rest of the day. In fact, ACV has many mechanisms that were associated with promoting satiety and favoring weight loss:

- It slows down gastric emptying, helping in feeling full for longer.
- It contains the great appetite suppressing fiber: pectin.
- Acids in ACV are precursors for important fat breakdown hormones such as growth hormone.

constipation. Most vinegar companies filter this film, so look for unfiltered versions, and if made from organic apple it’s even better.
AntibacterialACV is well-known as a powerful antibacterial. It helps kill pathogens and can be applied topically for cleaning and disinfecting. It also has been proven as an effective food preservative.
Improve Heart HealthOne study showed that women who eat vinegar-based salad dressings have lower risk for heart disease. Other studies, conducted on animals, have shown that consuming ACV can lower blood pressure, triglycerides and bad cholesterol-LDL, and increase good cholesterol-HDL.
Blood SugarThis is by far the most studied area. Vinegar seems to inactivate some of the carbohydrate digesting enzymes, slowing down sugar absortion and preventing blood sugars from rising to high levels.
A study published in Diabetes Care Journal found that consuming ACV improves insulin sensitivity and reduces blood levels of insulin. Also, taken at bedtime, it slighty reduces morning fasting blood sugar levels.
More studies are still needed, but for now if you are on blood glucose lowering medications, consult your doctor before increasing your ACV doses.
CONCLUSIONDespite the limited research, adding 1-2 tablespoons of diluted/unfiltered ACV to your daily diet would be very beneficial, especially for controlling blood sugar and body weight.
Nevertheless, adding one sole ingredient to your diet cannot replace a healthy lifestyle and portion control. Also, do not start any course of ACV if you are under the care of a physician.
Finally, do not drink ACV straight; its acidity is very harmful to your tooth enamel and esophagus.
To make ACV, yeast is added to apples producing acetic acid, which increases the absorption of important minerals (e.g. iron and calcium). Thus, adding vinegar to nutritious salads makes them even more nutritious.

See, it’s easy to hate and take out your anger on the world. What’s difficult is searching through the hatred for that one silver lining, bottling up that anger inside of you and locking it up in your mental basement. It may seem hopeless at times to put in effort to operate that hint of optimism in yourself but what if I said all your problems would shrink if you initialized your optimistic filter?
Findings from a Dutch study, which was focused on the relationship between optimism and depression, showed that when compared to optimists, pessimists were more likely to develop depressive disorders. Other studies showed a correlation between pessimism and lower resistance to stress, lower quantities of motivation and lower overall life satisfaction. We visited Italy to see luxury carmaker Maserati collaborating with renowned fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna to bring together a limited edition of Maserati cars.
What then followed was a press conference at the Hemmingway suite. It was in this very same suite where renowned writer Ernest Hemmingway stayed and is believed to write much of what is arguably his best work, “A Farewell to Arms.”
At the press conference, done over a casual dinner, we had the chance to meet two inspiring individuals: CEO of Maserati, Harald J. Wester and the CEO of Ermenegildo Zegna, Gildo Zegna.
The two CEOs discussed the possibility of a collaboration. The idea initially faced a few initial setbacks like any other project, but overcoming all odds, it has managed to see the light of day.

It was more than just two companies collaborating; it was two great Italian business houses with rich heritage and dedication for the finest quality coming together.
Following a dynamic question and answer session at the press conference we were taken for a delectable Italian dinner. They say Italians love their food, and we realized the famous proverb even more over our dinner. Where everyone, from the chef to the diners seemed to be passionate about the food.
Day 2For the second day, we had an experience akin to an episode of Top Gear. After a technical briefing we were given Maserati sedans, the Quattroporte and Ghibli. We drove the Ghibli to the commune of Trivero, which was an hour’s drive away. The
journey was remarkable, with the sun glinting on our gleaming car as we made our way through picture-postcard terrain.
Trivero is home to the former house of the Zegna family, the Casa Zegna. The ancestral home now serves as an archive –museum. We met and were given a tour of the house by no other than the Zegna family.
We then visited the Zegna mill. Here, we learnt how the finest luxury suiting Ermenegildo Zegna is famous for is made. There was an archive room where samples of all cloth produced in Zegna’s factory is archived along with a document that mentions the manufacturing procedure of each. Some archives date back to around 100 years ago.

Afterwards we went for lunch at the Bucaneve Restaurant. The restaurant is famous for using local ingredients and still adhering to traditional recipes. After looking at a non-descript menu I was a little apprehensive but once the food started coming in, my worries went away and I started to indulge in the scrumptious Italian cuisine.
After lunch, we went to the Balocco Race Track – the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles proving ground. The sight of it was absolutely breathtaking; the tracks go on for miles even beyond the horizon. The Maserati MC12, MC Stradale Centennial Edition and GranTurismo Sport – all entitled to their place among the finest sports cars in
the confines of a single city. From the modern architecture of cosmopolitan cities to the charming qualities of small towns up in the mountains, combined with the history of Italy’s ancient cities, Turin is a beautiful amalgam of it all.
the world were waiting for us on the track. We got to experience their power, agility and handling to the fullest as we were driven in them by professional rally and race drivers.
Following an exhilarating experience on the racetrack, we drove to the city of Turin. The city to us was like a mini Italy. It has all the essentials of what Italy has to offer in

Day 3We were one of the first group of journalists to ever enter Maserati’s state of the art factory. It is here where some of Maserati’s flagship cars are born and stamped with the recognizable Trident logo before being shipped all over the world.
Once inside we saw cars at different stages in the highly modernized production line. It was a great experience to go behind the scenes and watch mechanical lifts move the cars from station to station and the final luxurious finished product
waiting for us at the end of the production line.
The trip came to an end, but the overall journey starting from getting to experience Maserati’s latest lineup and Zegna’s luxurious textiles to breathtaking countryside landscapes and the finest Italian cuisine was definitely an unforgettable one.
The entrance to Casa Zegna.
We paid a visit to the National Museum of Cinema. The museum had an exhibit setup where we got to discover the technical side of movie making. The experience was like watching a film that revolves around us.

Omar Bin Al Khattab MosqueDespite being one of the oldest mosques in the world, this ancient Saudi mosque continues to be rather unheard-of.
By Mohammed Mirza
It was my first ever trip to the northern part of the country, I kept peeking from the window of the aircraft to catch sight of the new landscape. What astonished me most was the fact that there were hardly any mountains in this part of the country especially coming from craggy Hijaz.
It was just barren desert and as we approached closer to the city of Sakaka I saw circles of green irrigated fields measuring hundreds of meters in diameter. It was an amazing contrast seeing vast tracts of desert intermingling with circular fields of fertile farmland.

I landed at Jouf airport, and made my way to Sakaka located some 30 kilometers away from the airport. The street was wide and lined with short olive trees almost like I was in a country near the Mediterranean.
After catching up with a friend who lives in Sakaka, we made our way to the historic town of Domat Al Jandal, where the remarkable Omar Bin Al Khattab mosque stands.
It is believed that Omar (RA) ordered the construction of the mosque on his return from Bait Al Maqdis in Jerusalem. The mosque’s construction is dated back to over 1,300 years making it one of the most important historic, cultural, and heritage landmarks in the country and a prominent tourist attraction in the northern province of Jouf.
As we approached the center of the small town of Domat Al Jandal we saw brown colored signboards pointing towards the historic part of the city.
We reached it and soon after noticed a lofty minaret standing tall from the surrounding historic ruins of an ancient housing quarters. The minaret stands adjacent to Omar Bin Al Khattab mosque and is said to be one of the oldest in the world. It measures about 12.7 meters and is the most striking feature of the mosque.
Despite the recent proliferation of buildings and television towers, the soaring minaret gives a distinctively Islamic look to the skyline of the ancient dwelling. SO

The actual mosque is below ground level, so we had to descend two flights of stairs to reach it. The entrance of the mosque is quite small compared to the prayer halls it leads to. Cobblestone pathways led us to the quadrangle courtyard of the mosque. It was rather empty and serene.
The mosque is divided in two parts. On the northern part is the original structure and opposite to that is a much later extension to the mosque.
We first entered the more recent structure, which surprisingly doesn’t have a door. There were prayer rugs in the mosque, which show that prayer is held even to this day in the historic mosque.
The structure is made of uneven stones adjoined with mortar. The prayer hall is noticeably wide in width and short in length. Numerous pillars form the basis of the structure with uneven arches between them, all affixed by beams of wood.
The roof of the building is made from straw and reinforced with logs of wood. Lanterns hang from the ceiling, which give a historical feel to the mosque.
We then proceeded toward the older part of the mosque, which has small wooden doors that seem relatively new. But once inside it seems as if much of the original structure remains, with a similar straw roof and uneven stones in its walls.
Surprisingly, the access to the top of both structures is open to the public and a path of rutted stairs leads to the top. I’d decided not to walk on the roof as some of the other tourists, as to me the roof appeared to be fragile and I didn’t want to damage a heritage structure such as this one.
There were many more places in Dumat Al Jandal we had to explore, most of which were in a close vicinity to the mosque so without further ado we made our way out of the mosque and head towards the other sites the ancient city houses.

HISTORIC SAUDI Petroglyphs At Shuwaymis
Considering the era they belong to, which was far removed from the most basic tools and materials, it is quite astounding to see the detail of form that is depicted in the rock art at Shuwaymis.
By Mohammed Mirza
Rock art sites in Saudi Arabia are among the oldest and richest in terms of content depicted in the entire Arabian Peninsula. This site at Shuwaymis is one of the best examples of Saudi Arabian rock art.
Located close to the village of Hait in Hail Province, these ancient petroglyphs at Shuwaymis are just as remarkable but not as popular as the ones at Jubbah in the north.
The site became famous only recently in 2001 when a school principal, Mamdouh Al Rasheedi, spotted it. It is however said that Bedouins of the region were aware of the site prior to it.
The petroglyphs portray ancient biodiversity found in the region including cheetahs, ibex and cattle. They depict hunting scenes, in which men are seen carrying bows and arrows and using hunting dogs that are believed to be salukis.
On the eastern side of the site, a huge panel of camels, dating to a later period is found. Close to it are deeply carved footprints that are believed to be of the Neolithic Era. There is also an impressive 2-meter image of a lion.
