Japan• In 1905 The Treaty of Portsmouth ends the Russo-Japanese War

(1904–5) and gives Japan full control of Korea, the southern Sakhalin Islands, and China's southern Liaodong Peninsula.

• Manchuria is returned to China and Japan agrees to pay Russia for its lost territory.

• In 1910 Japan officially annexes Korea, which remains a Japanese colony until 1945
