Give the Light of Care and Educa‐
About Diwali GivingFest 2013
Diwali (awareness of inner light) is the biggest annual
festival for Indians, signifying the return of Lord Rama
to his kingdom after killing demon king Ravan. This
free event, during the Formula One festivities, gives a
peek into Austin’s Diversity by experiencing Indian cul‐
ture. The festival features music, dance, Colors of India
Fashion Show and AusIndian Idol competition spon‐
sored by Monsoon Dance. Food is available for purchase
on site catered by Inchin Bamboo Garden.
This festival also provides a forum to meet & greet and
network. Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole is our special guest
who has helped obtain partial fee waiver for the ven‐
ue to be used toward scholarships for kids who are eco‐
nomically disadvantaged in the Austin area.
Additionally the GivingFest will give us an opportunity
to open our hearts to donate:
Lightly used blankets and winter coats for refugees
Gift cards for kids in foster care served by CASA of
Travis County
Scholarships in denominations of $500 for vocational
training for kids who are economically disadvan‐
taged in Austin Metro area

Message From Mayor Pro Tem Sheryl Cole
Dear Members and Guests:
I am pleased to extend greetings to all of those in attend-ance at the Diwali GivingFest, scheduled for Saturday, No-vember 16, 2013 at the Asian American Resource Center.
Education is essential to the personal and profession-al growth of young people. Unfortunately, for homeless and economically disadvantaged youth, there are a number of barriers that might inhibit their success in the classroom and on the road to self-sufficiency. As a strong advocate for education, I believe that the larger community should do eve-rything within its power to ensure that every child is given an opportunity to achieve academic success, despite their external circumstances. To this end, I am honored to stand with the organizers of the Diwali GivingFest in presenting a $500 vocational tuition scholarship for the benefit of homeless and disadvantaged youth in Austin.
Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of this event! Please accept my best wishes for a most enjoyable time of celebration and giving.
