_______ ______________________ _ LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

The past year has been both one of tremendous growth and transition for our Division of Global

Emergency Medicine (EM). In September, we welcomed our newest core faculty member, Dr.

Genisca, with a focus on global pediatric emergency care. Also, this year, Dr. Karim and Dr.

Aluisio transitioned into the roles of Global EM Fellowship Director and Associate Director,

taking over responsibility for a fellowship that has grown to include 4 amazing trainees. Finally,

Dr. Rosenberg transitioned back to Providence after two years in Rwanda, joining Dr. Arbelaez

as the newest associate faculty members for our Division.

In 2018, our Division faculty and fellows made significant contributions to the global emergency

medicine evidence base, publishing or presenting nearly 40 peer reviewed manuscripts, book

chapters, or abstracts on their cutting edge global health research. In total, our Division faculty

currently hold more than 15 active grants for ongoing projects worldwide, totaling $4,242,484 in

cumulative funding. As can be seen from the grant and publication sections later in this report, our faculty research spans the

breadth of global EM, from infectious diseases to trauma care, and from education and pre-hospital care to ultrasound and

mobile health. In addition, 4 of our Division faculty and fellows currently serve as editors or reviewers for the prestigious

Global Emergency Medicine Literature Review, published annually in Academic Emergency Medicine.

In addition to their research, our faculty and fellows have become international leaders in global health training and curriculum

development. This year, Drs. Arbelaez and Moretti helped lead the Spanish translation of the WHO Basic Emergency Care

course for implementation in Latin America while Dr. Genisca participated in a WHO Basic Emergency Care train-the-trainers

course in Ethiopia. Dr. Karim developed and implemented a novel pre-hospital emergency care training course in Rwanda and

is working with the African Federation of Emergency Medicine on the development of a pre-hospital needs assessment tool.

Dr. Hayward continues to serve as faculty for the popular massive open online course “The Practitioner's Guide to Global

Health.” Our faculty and fellows have also delivered more than 75 lectures, invited presentations and ground rounds on global

health topics this past year, including several presentations at the African Conference on Emergency Medicine in Kigali,

Rwanda. Finally, this year we were proud to watch our very first class of 6 Rwandan EM residents graduate from the residency

in Kigali that our Division has worked to establish and grow over the past seven years.

Our Division also continues to provide significant support to our own residency program at Brown Emergency Medicine,

sponsoring 14 separate international rotations for EM residents this past year under the guidance and supervision of Dr.

Kearney. This year, emergency medicine also formally joined the Brown Resident International/Global Health Training

(BRIGHT) program, with Dr. Meagan Barry becoming the first EM resident to participate.

Far more important than the numbers listed above, however, is the substantial impact that our faculty, fellows, and residents

have had on the lives of thousands of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable citizens. We are thankful for your continued

support and proud of our ability to extend the mission of Brown Emergency Medicine far beyond the borders of Rhode Island.

With the addition of our new faculty, we look forward to extending our impact even further in 2019.

Sincerely,

Adam C. Levine, MD, MPH

Director, Division of Global Emergency Medicine

Stephanie Garbern, MD, MPH

Dr. Garbern is a second-year global EM fellow and received degrees in

Cultural Anthropology and Cellular & Molecular Biology from the

University of Michigan. After completing medical school at Albert

Einstein College of Medicine, she completed residency training at Beth

Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and then obtained her Master of

Public Health degree in global health from the Harvard T.H. Chan

School of Public Health. In 2018, Dr. Garbern volunteered with

International Medical Corps as part of a mobile medical team providing

care to communities affected by Hurricanes Irma/Maria around

Caguas, Puerto Rico. In March-April, she taught point-of-care

ultrasound to Liberian residents at JFK Hospital as part of the Liberia

Health Workforce Program. She is currently completing a study on the effect of artesunate-amodiaquine

mass drug administration on Ebola-related mortality during the West African outbreak and received a

Brown Emergency Medicine grant to conduct a pilot study evaluating the accuracy of biosensor devices

for vital sign monitoring in septic ED patients in Rwanda. She is currently completing a Diploma in

Tropical Medicine & Hygiene course in Tanzania/Uganda.

Kyle Denison Martin, MD, DO, MA, MPH

Kyle Denison Martin is originally from Michigan, where he attended

Michigan State University for his undergraduate, graduate and medical

studies. Kyle has been traveling to Haiti frequently since he was a child.

He currently collaborates on water and sanitation projects in rural

Haiti and researches non-communicable disease management by

community health workers. Kyle also travels frequently to Rwanda,

where he has helped with curriculum design and teaching for an

Emergency Medicine MMed program at University Teaching Hospital -

Kigali. Kyle is an endurance athlete who has cycled across the United

States. He co-founded Run Haiti, a nonprofit that holds running events

and promotes fitness in Haiti. This past year, Kyle helped to develop

Simulation training and Research Development curricula for an Emergency Medicine MMed program

at University Teaching Hospital - Kigali. He also taught at weekly didactics and bedside rounds while in

Rwanda. Kyle received grant funding for research on the peripheral administration of vasopressor

medications in critically ill patients. He also received grant funding to create free open-access medical

education material on global emergency medicine.

Catalina Gonzalez-Marques, MD

Dr. Catalina González Marqués is currently a Global Health Fellow

in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Brown University. She

received her Medical Doctorate from the George Washington

University School of Medicine and Health Science before completing

her specialty training in Emergency Medicine from the University of

Florida where she also served as Chief Resident. During medical

school, Dr. González Marqués worked abroad in Peru and Nicaragua.

In Peru, she worked at the U.S. Navy’s Medical Research Unit

(NAMRU-6). In Nicaragua she worked with the NGO RAD-AID. She is

concurrently working towards her Master’s in Public Health at Brown

University. Her current work at Brown focuses on continued

development of pre-hospital care system in Kigali, Rwanda as well as

assisting in the development of a needs assessment to respond to the

current Venezuelan refugee crisis in Colombia.

Katelyn Moretti, MD

Dr. Moretti’s fellowship activities include conducting an upcoming needs

assessment on emergency medicine education within medical schools

across Colombia with the goal of implementing the WHO Basic

Emergency Care course for senior medical students just prior to

graduation. In addition, she worked with the WHO to aid in the

translation of the course to Spanish. Dr. Moretti is also supporting and

aiding Fulbright scholar Chris Reynolds, currently in Colombia, in his

assessment of emergent medical access among internally displaced and

former rebels across Colombia. She is also working to establish a

residency exchange to provide Brown emergency residents the

opportunity to rotate in Colombia. She applied for and was awarded the

innovations grant for funding of these projects. In addition, she has

applied for the GEMA/SAEM grant for further support of implementation

of the BEC in Colombia.
