Understanding the Church YearSeason of Pentecost

The second half of the Church Year called “Pentecost” emphasizes the result of God’s work in our hearts through the Word – creating and sustaining faith in our hearts and producing good works in our lives. While the emphasis shifts, we never leave behind Christ and his work for us, which was the center of our attention during the first half of the Church Year.

THEME: YOUR SAVIOR HAS DESTROYED DEATH’S POWER

OPENING HYMN Every Morning Mercies New | 580 (v. 1-3)

INVOCATION*

M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you

CONFESSION†

M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

ABSOLUTION‡

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called

* Worship begins “in the name of” (invocation) the one true God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. At the very beginning of worship we are reminded of the words spoken in baptism where God puts his name on us. It is only because of God’s undeserved love for us that worship is even possible.† As we approach God in worship we are brutally honest about who we are, what we have done, and what we deserve from God. Instead of hiding our sin, we run to the only solution – God’s mercy in Christ. ‡ Since Jesus himself has promised to forgive all those who repent of their sins and told us to forgive the repentant, the declaration of forgiveness is as valid and certain as if Christ himself stood before us and declared our sins forgiven.

servant of Christ and by his command, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

RESPONSIVE SONG§ Every Morning Mercies New | 580( v. 4) As the morning light returns,As the sun with splendor burns,Teach us still to turn to you; With your light our souls renew. Then shall we our voices raiseIn unfailing prayer and praise.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Let us pray.O God, you have prepared joys beyond understanding for those who love you. Pour into our hearts such love for you that, loving you above all things, we may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

§ With a swift change of mood, in an outburst of joy and praise to the Holy Trinity our response lifts us from self to contemplation of the divine and from consciousness of human need to glorification of God’s majesty, power, and holiness. ** The public reading from Scripture can be traced back to the synagogue service (Luke 4:16-21). From Apostolic times the reading of carefully chosen lessons from the Apostles and Evangelists has been the central part of Christian worship.

attention on what really matters – the grace and sustaining promise of God’s abiding presence and his unfailing love.22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.”25 The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him;26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young.28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the Lord has laid it on him.29 Let him bury his face in the dust— there may yet be hope.30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace.31 For no one is cast off by the Lord forever.32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love.33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone.

VERSE OF THE DAY Mark 8:34bM: Alleluia. If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. Alleluia.

THE EPISTLE LESSON 2 Timothy 1:8-14Paul’s death was nearing as he wrote these words, but even in the face of losing his life he is not discouraged. It is in death that the gospel shines brightest for the Christian because Christ has conquered death, it has been swallowed up in victory.

8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. 9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 11 And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. 12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.

13 What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.HYMN OF THE DAY In You, O Lord, I Put My Trust | 448

SERMON TEXT Mark 5:21-24a,35-43 21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side

of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22 Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him. 35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”

36 Overhearing what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is, seen and unseen

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures.He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.OFFERING

“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” - 2 Corinthians 9:7

LAMB OF GOD‡‡

DISTRIBUTION Guests: Living Savior practices member communion. We do this because the Bible teaches that not only do we receive Christ’s true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins in Holy Communion, but we are also confessing a oneness in the faith. For this reason, if you are not a member of Living Savior or the WELS, we want to give you a chance to learn what we believe and teach before we ask you to join us for communion. Please speak to Pastor if you are interested in joining us for communion in the future. Thank you.

THANK THE LORD

‡‡ This beautiful song summarizes the redeeming work of Christ and prepares our hearts and minds for communion. It has been sung in the liturgy since about 700 AD.
